It's the mental part that I like. No health & safety b*ll*x either. Which firesite did you go to? I did Southover this year but I've marched with Waterloo and those rookies have sent me almost deaf! Some great vids on youtube!  Smiley

Was well lucky with the weather this year as torrential rain was forecast with weather warnings all week for the 5th in the south east. But it all went over Kent and East Anglia instead and I never saw any rain from Northants to Lewes. : )

No **** - I was also at Southover this year - did you see a bloke throwing up after downing a hipflask of whisky?? That was me! Not something nice to admit...!

You've got to go with Cliffe as the best society, definitely the most evil and the only ones who still suggest we should burn the Pope.

The fireworks are amazing, have to be seen to be believed.

Anyway back to the weather - no white Christmas this year - statistically I've heard the UK has never had three in a row. So after the last two years it was always going to be likely we wouldn't get a third.

Shortest day of the year today - summers coming!

Ha ha, no, didn't see anyone throwing up...........saw loads of drunk people though!  Grin

I saw some people complaining that Cliffe's fireworks were not as good this year. I want to do all the firesites eventually, I've now done Southover, Commercial Square and Waterloo. Also did Nevile's which is held the week or so before the 5th and is held on Borough's firesite. Yes, Cliffe have held on to the traditions of Bonfire more than any of the other societies.

But,  further to your white Christmas comment, 2009 and 2010 was the first time in my 53 years that I've seen snow on the ground on two consecutive Christmas. I've never spent Christmas day anywhere than in I'boro/kettering and I've never seen it snow in the daytime on the 25th. It snowed hard one Christmas Eve in about 1970 and was probably still snowing past midnight so technically, that was a white Christmas and I also remember a few snow grains coming down (in the daytime) in the early 90's but as for proper snow, never.  In fact, it usually, as per this year, turns really mild just before Christmas!

What was that you were saying about a weather bores Bingers??  Grin

It look like we wont have a white Chrismas here in bayern either. We had about four inches of the white stuff two days ago and it has almost gone now. A balmy 5 degrees today and thick fog this morning.

It's like a spring day here, clear blue sky and 10C. Even more tropical further north, Sheffield, Leeds and Newcastle are currently 12C!
And that those cities are warmer than Northants isn't as unusual as Northerners like to make out and southerners think.

I saw this  on the news, incredible clouds!  I've always noticed when I'm up Yorkshire way that the cumulus clouds (when there is a prevailing wind) are at a different angle to the ground compared to dewn ere., no doubt caused by the Pennines.

Mind you, if you think they are unusual, take a look at these cloud formations!!  http://volatile.parigot.free.fr/images/specimen-cumulus.jpg

With snow on the ground for Christmas 2009 and 2010, Christmas 2011 is one of the mildest on record with a temperature of 12C for Christmas Day and Boxing Day in Northants and even warmer further north with 15.4C recorded in NE Scotland! Now that is mild!!  Shocked

Excellent temperature inversion here today.  From the mountain tops we could see all the way to the Alps (200km away) again, but not the nearest villages, lost in a sea of cloud.

A look at this morning temps show that Newcastle is currently 6C warmer than Northampton. Northampton -3, newcastle +3. This state of affairs isn't that unusal in winter but  a 6C difference is.

When I took the kids to school this morning it was a chilly -8C, mind you one bonus is that the humidity levels are so low you don't get frost forming on the car, so no need for all that scraping.
My lad is well pleased as the snow we had on Saturday is not meltig at all. No surprise really as the maximum day time temp forecast for the next week is -5C.

Where do you live Sing?

Yes, the winds off the continent are low in moisture and save all that scraping! Last winter it rained one morning  and turned breifly to snow before leaving off. The temperature and humidity dropped so much that within a few hours, the road was bone dry! I love this weather, the countryside is so clean!  Smiley

I'm currently living about 50 miles north-east of Munich.
This morning driving from the valley floor where it was a balmy -4C up to my house and the temp dropped to -7C and I'm only 240ft higher.

When I got into my car this morning in Whitley Bay, it was -2 and that was within spitting distance of the seafront.  At half past four this afternoon, getting back into my car in North Shields it was +2.  Can't comment on Northampton though.

The wind chill would have taken a bit more off as the wind is currently whipping in from the east giving some impressive surf in what is usually a nice flat, calm sea.
