Title: Scunny away
Post by: pattcobb on October 01, 2016, 20:16:08 pm
Coincides with me having a free weekend. So I'm going must admit I wished it were a more glamorous fixture/destination but it'll be a new ground.
It's a fair old distance from the station, anybody got any pub tips?
I notice a Sam Smiths pub called the Berkeley is nearby, anyone been in what's it like?
Train from leicester for me - change at Sheffield (hoping for a visit to Sheffield Tap during the day too).
Tough game v this season's surprise package.

Sheffield Tap and at a push the Spoons in Scunny town centre. Plusbus to the Tesco opposite. At the minute feel like I'm the only one going.

We've a shocking record at Glanford Park. I've been twice, the infamous 7-0 defeat with Steve Sherwood in goal and a creditable 1-1 draw with Dean Trott equalising for us. Both early 90's I think. I'd happily take a point now.

Tough ask! Look like team to beat this year.
No expectations of a result but it will start looking bad on paper regarding form.

Sc***horpe's Div One leading scorer a massive doubt for Saturday, hasn't trained in a week.

I thought we drew there a couple of seasons ago - it was their promotion year to L1. Might have been 0-0.

I personally hate it when the big hitters are missing as they either make a remarkable recovery or someone better steps up!
Rovers Matty Taylor coming off the bench was a sickener  ;)

Nope. Last win in Sc***horpe was in 1980 when this was number 1:

https://www.youtu.be/KNIZofPB8ZM

17 trips to Scunny since then with 5 draws and 12 defeats and 42 goals conceeded including 5-0, 5-1 and 7-0 losses!

Yes we did. Last time I went there we lost 1-0 and I remember it only because it was a bitterly cold day and it felt as if the wind blew into the away end directly  from the Arctic Circle.  A thoroughly more miserable away day I struggle to remember, I don't think we created a chance all game.

Big Boy Bingers made his debut at Scunny aged three.  Lost 1 - 0 late on and he cried.  I felt a good lesson was being learnt at the time.

Yep remember that - I like Diamond he's a survivor. If the defence holds up we might get something. Good support will help!

They don't come much more difficult than this, I would take a point if offered now - I said the same before the Swindon game so I'm hoping to tempt fate again - the main problem is that Sc***horpe are much better than Swindon and if we let them dominate possession they are more than likely to make us pay. I'm assuming it picks itself - nyatanga for Zak and McCourt for beautyman.

52 years ago this was the team which played Sc***horpe away 1963/64 , our first ever Division 2 game.

We won 2-1!

Brodie, Foley, Everitt, Leck,Branson, Kiernan, Hails, Smith, Large, Reid , Lines.
Cannot remember the scorers - I was a schoolboy at the time.
That side had better wingers!

Scunny away is one of my least favourite games. I dont like the ground, and have never found a decent pub stop on the way up.
The only highlights of my numerous visits, were, a 4-4 draw, and seamus having to go through a fire exit, as he couldnt fit through the turnstile.  ;D

On the other hand you've already paid for the online service through your licence fee - the only reason you can't access regional radio stations online during match commentaries is to protect the Player franchise.

Oh I'm so angry.

Just what I was about to post - however Taylor's reaction won't make an appeal any easier, holding his hands up and pretty much acknowledging and accepting the red card for some reason. If he's suspended for millwall I guess that opens the door for byrom.

I really enjoyed that.  A good solid performance against a team that have so far been good enough to be top of the league.  Don't think they will be in May mind.

Good flowing and battling football.  Would have been better with a different ref as he did make a few baffling decisions.  Taylors tackle must have been deemed to have been two footed, because I didn't think it warranted a straight red.  I think he did annoy the ref early on when the play was halted when he went down and stayed down perhaps unnecessarily, which is why the drop ball was then contested.

Their free kick was superb, it really should not have gone in.

Buchs was excellent in keeping their winger in check.  Holmes was miles faster than him, but he used his guile and experience to neutralise the threat.

Second time seeing McCourt and thought he was much better than when I last saw him.

Title: Re: Scunny away
Post by: Phippsville cobbler on October 08, 2016, 20:15:16 pm
Was worried early on when their 19 gave Buchs a 10yd start and went passed him like roadrunner!, fair play to Buchs he didn't do it again. Thought we had some good chances in the 1st half, 2nd half all were immense, point the least we deserved. Heard Alexander on the radio after, I know we are all biased, but what game was he watching.

Title: Re: Scunny away
Post by: Irchy cob on October 08, 2016, 20:24:53 pm
I've always ranked Alexander in the same class as the likes of derek Adams and Karl Robinson in that they are never prepared to accept that their team has been second best at any point of the game - magnanimous they are not. Hopefully scunnie will start to find their true level soon and josh Morris will get poached by a championship club in January

Bloody good performance that. Thought we were the better side and showed great intent all through the game, and towards the end there was only one team that was going to win it.

Good reports from Bingers and a bravado one from Ron. Thought we were unlucky to go in at half time 1 down. Defence was very good and cool when under pressure. Diamond played well as did Nyatanga who also played very well;unfussed performance and secure at heart of defence. Cant see Zak reclaiming his place after that performance. Full backs excellent and in truth both might have been MOM. Midfield good with McCourt making some muck and nettle challenges. JJOT was at times a tad classy in midfield - one thing for certain Skunthorpe did not have any body as good as him. Smith was good - liked his save in the first minute; talk about being in the right place at the right time. Anderson to certain extant lived up to his awol reputation!
Revel was good and troubled their defence all afternoon. They also struggled a bit to handle Hooper whose size and burst of speed led up to our equalizer. Hoskins did ok when he came on ; good team man.  Their Holmes was very quick and am surprised how well we handled him....he had real genuine pace too....Diamond once had a 5yd start on him was easily over hauled. Liked McCourt's performance to day with some vigorous tackling and well taken goal - celebrated his goal with a rapturous crowd like a gladiator. Loved it. Support was fine and in good voice - who was the stubby little bloke(with beard) who orchestrated the support pretty well?
What was so reassuring about the result was not the point gained (thoroughly merited) but the manner in how it was gained. This was a Cobblers performance of old and wholly appreciated by most there. Am surprised that so many of our support failed to make this game, but no matter the point was well and truly made that we can comfortably live with the top L1 sides - and could have nicked all three points. If only we had RH still here as that was a game he would have excelled in! What where the police doing filming our? support or was it some of theirs?

Yes a good away performance in a game where the results of the endeavour were rewarded.
Their free kick was pretty much top bin unsaveable.
The sending off was very harsh not two footed or high either. More baffling was Zander's booking at the end of the first half for an exceptionally timed tackle. I was livid about that one, may have embarrassed myself in front of a steward.
Occurred to me on the way home that referees should explain decisions like that and the sending off to the paying punters, it would be only fair as we pay their wages/expenses woudn't it?
Sounds corny to say I liked the look of McCourt when I first saw him at Sileby. But It's apparent that he is a major player this season, the team not so good without him.
Moloney got forward really well crosses with both feet that led to chances, although when Hooper finally got past his man and crossed it resulted in a goal.
So all in all a good game.
As for Scunny itself, fooking glad I don't live there!!

Just seen the challenge on SKY, never a red card. Yellow maybe but shouldn't have been red...
I'm sure someone more clued up than myself will post the highlights link so we can see it again,  but when I saw it on Ch5 last night it looked a clear red to me. It wasn't too footed but I thought Taylor took the blokes standing leg rather than the ball and was lucky not to break his ankle.

Sometimes players get injured in normal tackles. I think Taylor's reaction was one of remorse for catching the lad, not one of what was I thinking thats a horror challenge.
OK you could make a case for a red but no more than that and of course a home player gets a yellow for it.
What did you think of Zander's booking?

I best take another look then.
I Would agree that Taylor knew he'd caught him, hence why he immediately held his hands up. I wasn't saying it was malicious, but it was a badly miss timed tackle which warranted a red. Has the law changed so the foul has to be deliberate now? I'm not trying to interpret the rules of the game and apply them as they stand now, I'm much to stupid for that.
I didn't see Zanders booking, (i wasnt there) don't remember it from ch5 last night. I do like the way he goes down though, he's not bad for a defender.

I wouldn't bother appealing. It's a red card challenge. Happy to be proven wrong.

There was definitely no malicious intent in the tackle by Matty Taylor but I said red card straight away as viewed from my position down the toilet end (The whole ground seems a bit of a toilet) of the away stand. Straight leg and studs up as he makes contact with the Scunny players standing leg left the ref with an easy decision in front of a baying home main stand.
Funnily enough from my same view point it looked as though Zander missed the ball and took the player.
Unfortunately I didn't see the tackle on Moloney on the sideline though I tend to mistrust a player when they start to wave for attention while supposedly poleaxed even if he is one of our own.

It was a heartening performance yesterday especially when down to ten men. It will hopefully bolster their confidence and team resolve even more for the tough games to come. You never know, Taylor's three match absence may work in our favour with McCourt and John Joe having to step up in terms of responsibility as a midfield pairing and their getting time playing together.

The fans were great again yesterday. That goal led to a serious amount of emotion being let out in the celebrations. The ovation the fans and players gave each other after the final whistle was like many last season under Wilder. And rightly so, we made a clear top of the table team look very ordinary and they were lucky to get out of it with a point.

We have come so far these last twelve months, what a fantastic time to be a Cobbler again.

Cheers Crowy, hopefully the club will show the Zander tackle in their extended highlights.

That was a sublime deft touch by Revell to direct Hooper's cross onto the post before McCourt followed it up to score.

It was similar to James Collins' goal at Pompey wasn't it?

We showed the kind of spirit after going behind that wins you games more often than not at this level, and admittedly the football was not great but we dug in and got a point. For what it's worth, I thought we were the better side overall on the balance of play and deserved all three points.

From my vantage point, the atmosphere was good, admittedly not brilliant but we made a decent bit of noise (even when we went 1-0 down, ) and did our bit getting behind the players. As i've said before  it's all well and good moaning about the atmosphere, but generally I find the people who complain about the lack of noise are the same ones who keep telling you to sit down and spend all game sat there with their arms crossed, occasionally opening their mouths to moan about Gorre and hurl abuse at match officials, opposing players or whoever else will listen.

I don't see how you can have anything other than a positive mindset after today's game: a good, hard-fought point in front of the decent League one attendance and a bit of a sing-song and a chance to point and laugh at those Irons chavs to boot. There's just no pleasing some people.

I agree with pretty much everything here.
The only downside was how much of a dump Scunny as a town is.
A few decent pubs wouldn't have gone amiss

I think Lanakings comment " in front of the decent League one attendance" is a bit over the top. A decent L1 gate would be 7 to 9k.

I'm in the grey hoody running down the steps at the goal. Just an outlet of sheer relief, joy and emotion especially the third time lucky strike of the goal.
Oh and by the way it's a well known fact that the camera adds about a stone and half  ;D

We can argue til we're blue in the face...
But a shinpad coming off does not constitute a red card does it? If anything it proves that Taylor's foot wasn't high.
The tackle on Moloney wasn't very clever either but of course home player = yellow

At least Taylor and their guy who fouled Zander were going for the ball, the bloke who took out Moloney was nowhere near the ball, his only intension was to take out the man. So I agree with Grove.

So the fact Taylor managed to remove the guys shinpad is proof that he didn't go in high or dangerously, that he played the ball not his leg, and that he was nowhere close to breaking his ankle?
Wow. Pattcobb, with you in our side we are never going to lose again!

I went on Saturday and I have to say I was very impressed with how we played during the whole of the game. They started quicker than us and created a few chances but apart from the first 10-15 minutes, I felt we were very comfortable.

The 'harsh' sending off seemed to galvanise the lads and we dug deep, knocked it about and scored a very deserved equaliser. If lady luck was on our side we would have came away with three points, thinking back to missed chances by Hooper and O'Toole's 2 yard header which he sent flying over the bar in a empty net.

The fans who travelled were fantastic and well behind the team. I've had a look on Sc***horpe forums and many of them were very complimentary to how we set up and played.

Great result baring in mind we had to play 30 mins + with 10 men and away, against top of the league ... I'll take that

Up The Teyn

Me too. On the highlights it's quite clear that he looked to take out the man as violently as possible and made no attempt to play the ball. That is  premeditated violence, but apparently not worthy of a red card.

I don't think we would have won an appeal given that there has to be a clear error of judgement on the referee's part.

Big opportunity for someone like Joel Byrom to step up.

That's assuming page doesn't just put beautyman straight back in - if he's fit - and go with McCourt and jj behind him. I'd rather go with Byram for a bit of balance and for his set piece delivery

He is a professional sportsman so he should be fit and ready for at least 60 minutes. Also his game has never been about running all over the park has it? More on his passing, set pieces and general team build up play .Play him and if it doesn't work send him out on loan.
