Title: The Iron (A) FAC Replay 14/11
Post by: guest3063 on November 12, 2017, 11:47:43 am
The second of three games against Scunny in two weeks.

After yesterdays excellent performance at Oxford what can we expect from this game? JFH will probably change it a bit with maybe Crooks playing against his former team. Regan Poole also comes back into contention after International duty but Grimes could be suspended after picking up his 5th yellow of the season. Also, a doubt over Daniel Powell as he went off with an injury at Oxford.

According to the official site went he was called up it was the Tuesday just gone (Southampton U21s) that he also missed and he should be back for the FA Cup game

Irchy, I think you're right about Poole, they have another game early this week (Monday or Tuesday) so can't see him being available for us.

Just looked it up, definitely Tuesday (in Bangor) so won't be available.

                     Cornell
Moloney - Taylor - Pierre - Buchanan
             McWilliams - Foley
      Waters - Crooks - McGugan
                     Long

             Ingram

Moloney   Taylor. Pierre.  Buchanan
              McWilliams   JJOT

Waters        McGugan        Crooks

                 Long

I what I would like to see

However , I think he will pick

            Ingram

Moloney   Taylor. Pierre.     Buchanan

             McGugan.  McWilliams

Waters.        JJOT           Bowditch

             Long

Ps the Chron got the team exactly right on Friday with Waters in the eleven so obviously knew something !

I hope Long doesn't start. If we lose him again to Injury then we will have serious problems again.

Id probably rest Taylor too, but he seems to play every single game no matter what. (Ingram isn't allowed to play I believe) I would go for:-

                     Cornell
Moloney McGivern Pierre Smith
          McWilliams McGugan
      Waters Foley Bowditch
                 Richards

Giving Hoskins and Revell 20-30 mins if they are back.

Dropped a clanger here and haven't bought my ticket for myself and my daughter. Can I purchase away tickets at the ground or can I possibly call Northampton in the morning. I live in Lincoln so can't just pop down to Sixfields.

Go in the home end and find a seat with plenty of empty spaces around you. Shouldn't be difficult.

Due to the intense rivalry and don't forget, Doncaster Rovers (yes, them!) await the winners of this tie, cannot see anything but a sellout at Blandford Park.

You might get lucky with ticket touts outside the ground, sorry stadium. Failing that, try Ticketmaster or Viagogo...though leaving it a tad late!

Good luck!

Yes, I understand that. He clearly wanted a ticket in the away end but missed the 4pm deadline so wondered if any Brains of Britain on here would know the answer to his problem.

Sarcastic, facetious...what's a word between friends  ;)

The official site just says advanced ticket sales end at 4pm Monday. Therefore, it would seem tickets can be purchased at the ground. No mention of a price rise.

Thats a considerably weakened team. Personally Im glad. It should still be strong enough 'to give them a game' although I will be surprised if our unbeaten run is still in place come 10pm/10:30pm.

Long, JJ, BM and a few others need to be protected for the league campaign. He's doing that.

Playing a weakened side seems like we don’t want to win this. I just don’t get it, why is the league game more important? If you lose the league game at least you have 45 others to gain points from...in the cup it’s one off, lose and you’re out!!
Maybe the lure of Donny away, £18,000 for winning in the first round and a potential big gun in the third round isn’t enough, maybe the lure of a week off at the beginning of December wins the day!!

Very weak sides in the Checkatrade, slightly stronger in the Carabao, and a weak side in the FA Cup....sad to see the state of affairs in English football!

If I had travelled to that game and saw that team take the field , I would write to the manager asking him to personally refund my expenses because quite clearly he has disrespected the competition with that selection .

Well the only thing tonight confirms is that our "squad" players are not good enough for league 1.

I would expect at least Richards, Revell, Smith, Kasim, Waters, Barnett and Hoskins to be shipped out in January.

For a progressive league 1 club all do not have enough quality

Aren't we more likely to get key players injured by throwing them on cold with only 10 minutes to go ?

Why, do we always get these points made after defeats.

Revell, Barnett & Hoskins didn't even play tonight so a bit harsh.

How has 1 game confirmed that? Football fans are so reactive and never give players time. Lots of people wanted O'Toole out at the start.

Nothing to do with tonight, I'd have said the same on Saturday.  Results and performances like tonight just reaffirm that.

It's not harsh, if we want to push on and move forward then we need better than the above

JFH can say what he likes tonight , but he has ripped off the supporters .
We all love a cup run and expect the best side put out , not the stiffs .
If that was a league game tonight , it would have been a different side .
Not acceptable in my opinion and supporters are being ripped off .

Bit of a summary. Bowditch and Kasim have surely blown their last opportunities at NTFC. They were both abysmal tonight. Richards should seriously think about hanging his boots up too. He's done as a footballer.

Crooks was our best player by an absolute mile tonight. It's a huge boost having him back in the team.
I'm not a massive fan but Cornell had a decent game too.

The line up was a bit disappointing but i felt that it was a good opportunity for some of them to show that they were good enough and could challenge for a place in the 1st team squad. Unfortunately, some of them did not take advantage of that opportunity.

Just got back (I live in Lincoln so a nice easy jaunt for me!) - I got in and paid at the ground btw ;-)

Just read people comments on here and I think it's a tad harsh. The first half was similar to the first half of the chuckle trade match last week. A weakened team, devoid of any real quality, a very limited attacking threat and only really Crooks could take any credit in the oppositions half. That said I thought taylor continued with his normal dominance and organisation at the back, Cornell was solid and there was the moment of magic that opened us up. He hit it so hard I was convinced it had hit the side netting but fair play. You have to applaud that, he'll never hit one like that again in his career! Scunny absolutely deserved their lead at half time.

Second half we certainly came back into it, defended well and attacked with more purpose and direction. Crooks held up the ball and distributed well. Smith became a greater outlet on the left and tried his best with limited skill set to get the ball in the box. Bowditch on the opposite flank worked hard but is a very average footballer and despite his best attempts you felt when it went right for him, even he was surprised he'd pulled it off.

McWilliams struggled a little at right back in my opinion and got caught out of position a few times. It will be nice to get him back in the middle of the park to not stunt his development. Foley I thought had a much improved game and tried to carry the ball more. Kasim is a lumbering, luxury player who, with time, is a good passer of the ball but we are often found wanting with him in the middle as he has no real speed to keep up, track back and is often bypassed in the middle.

Rico puts himself about but again, he cannot play the lone role any longer. With support higher up the pitch, particularly when crooks became a target man and with better calibre players (as demonstrated with JJOT & McG came on) he seems more comfortable to play off and becomes more effective.

The comments slating team line up tonight is just a little short sighted. Jimmy is just trying to rotate squad members and rest key players in the team for more important league battles ahead. Don't get me wrong a cup run is nice but certainly not important and I think his general direction was to nullify Sc***horpe and even be willing to chase a 1-0 down and push the likes of foley, Bowditch, kasim, smith, Rico etc for as long as possibly without using key subs. It nearly worked as well. Crooks put a good effort narrowly wide from inside the box and so nearly prodded home late on after a nice inter change with him and Rico. Waters had a chance after a mazy run and Foley should have done better with a free header on the 6 yard box.

Tough on them tonight but congrats to Sc***horpe. They edged it with their first half display and their moment of quality was enough.

Very poor 1st half, midfield was total rubbish with Kasim, Foley and Richards having ineffective games to put it mildly. For all that the defence played ok and were only undone by a superb drive from their right hand side. Possibly Ingham might have saved it? As the second half wore on things got better and we began to get on the front foot. Perhaps JFH might have pulled on the subs sooner? Believe it or not we began to camp in their half but Richards was so poor that it was all for nothing. The defence saved us first half , but the side which started particularly the midfield and fwds were so poor that given Sc***horpe’s lack of cutting edge in front of goal didn’t matter. Which brings me to team selection. Bowditch, Kasim,Foley, the new year centre half, Richards, Smith perhaps McW are not good enough as a side. Perfectly obvious to me. Perhaps 2 or 3 might be ok surrounded by more accomplished players but not wholesale selection. Playing Bowditch on the right was a disaster; better to have started him on the left where he did ok Saturday.
As to what FWalden made of it Lord knows.

Good write FW perhaps a tad generous to some of the fringe players! Good appraisal of JFH selection as was Dans summary. Still cannot understand why Bowditch was played on the right for 70mins! Hats off to the travelling few.
I think it shows the fringe players aren't as good as the regulars, which is good as it means he's picking the best players normally.
It is sad though to treat the FA Cup as a 'b' fixture. The only remaining opportunity to play one of the big boys. It's sad in general that many teams don't play their best 11 in the cup. Understandable with teams in 4 or 5 competitions but IMO for anyone below the Championship the FA cup should be seen as important as any game, especially at this stage of the season.
Anyone at Anfield knows they don't come around very often.

....and however big this squad, we still need two strikers. A bit of pressure now to turn them over at the weekend after last night.

I think if you asked most Cobblers supporters which of last night or Saturday is the more important match the answer would be heavily in favour of this Saturday.  There is also the added factor of a long trip to Plymouth next Tuesday followed by a home fixture against Bury.  So it is easy to understand JFH's thinking and, let's face it, the FA Cup has sadly become a diminished competition, talk it up though the BBC try to do.  The money bags Premier League clubs much more concerned about Europe or survival in that league are to blame for its demise.  If the winner of the FA Cup gained a Champions league place it might help but I think UEFA would not allow this.  In continental European countries domestic cup competitions are not considered important.

I am not sure that many of the fringe players did their cause any good last night and I expect Saturday's team to be very close to the one that did well at Oxford.

Whether JFH was right to make changes last night or not will be proven in the next week or so - if we take say a minimum of 5 points from Sc***horpe, Plymouth and bury then it was probably the right decision, if we end up with 3 or less then possibly less so. What does confuse me is that if we were going to “rotate” the squad so much for the replay then why did we go with such a strong team in the first game?  On the McWilliams subject I think the previous poster makes a good point when he says that he hopes that Shaun doesn’t end up being a jack of all trades - my fear is that on Saturday with the abundance of options in central midfield he’s going to end up on the bench again with moloney coming back in as specialist right back.

Not exactly harsh on Revell if he can't get into our heavily rotated cup teams any more. I'd imagine the vast majority of our supporters would prefer his first team wage being redistributed elsewhere. Bowditch and Kasim were both signed as first teamers as well (pre-investment money), so you'd expect we could sign some real quality in our forward positions if we can move some of these players on.

We have a squad of about 30ish players at the moment. I hope the people who travelled surely expected we'd have a heavily rotated squad for this fixture.

Bit hard to judge the performances of Kasim and Foley etc when there was no orthodox wingers on the pitch and Rico as the strike threat. Have to assess the team as a unit.

Shame we didn't go for this as Sc***horpe were ravaged by injuries and Donny were beatable in the next round.

Unless JFH Hasselbaink thinks we'll have a good go at the league this year with the players he has lined up...

With this lineup we would have been relegated by Christmas - you’ve also got to remember that he employed buchs as left wing back where he was like a fish out of water.  Luckily the Chinese money enabled us to bring in amongst others Ash Taylor who has been a great JED signing.  Regarding revs, my understanding was that he is currently out with a groin injury, he hasn’t been frozen out - having said that I would be very surprised if he is still here in January.

Not that hard when you have Grimes, McGugan, O'Toole, Crooks, Poole and McWilliams who are all better. Carrying 7th and 8th choice central midfielders will be an incredible waste of (first team) wage when we will have very minimal need for squad rotation when January comes around. Probably out of all cup competitions, and in need of more firepower further up the pitch.

That is a valid point - I think a lot of people are expecting some of the fringe players (Hanley, kasim, bowditch and even Rico/revs etc) to magically be taken off the wage bill, but when they’re all on long term contracts I can’t see many takers. More likely we are going to have an incredibly swollen squad if we make the key additions that we are hoping for/need.

With regard to team selection, I have my preferences but for the time being I will leave it to JFH. I am pleased that we have moved away from a Rico & Revell partnership. That is progress.

Apologies if has already been mentioned, but according to the BBC match report the attendance was 1,880. So we can see what the fans think of the FA Cup as well, it probably doesn't help that we will play them for a third time in two weeks on Saturday.

Focus on climbing the league and winning the only cup that matters, Chuckle Trade Trophy.

Completely disagree with this. For a team like the cobblers the FA cup DOES give an opportunity to play a big team with all the rewards and memories that brings. How many big FA cup games can you remember compared with hum drum mid December league games? I can still remember us beating Arsenal 3-1 in the late fifties. The league is obviously important but will 3 points (or less) make any difference come the end of the season? It may do, but unlikely.

The January window is going to be very interesting, I imagine.

Whether you agree or disagree is immaterial! Vintage is pointing out how he believes the majority of Cobblers' fans view Cup v League...not what is right, wrong or the merits of the Cup.
Attendances bare this out both here and nationally.

I for one am with the seeming majority. Couldn't really give a jack about last night, the absorbing, mouth watering prospect of drawing a prem team in the 3rd round (after obviously beating Donny!), jostling with the 'at Sixfields once every four years' brigade to get a ticket (see Beds and re-dev there)...just to sit watching the Prem team's U21s!

Wahey...the Checkatrade!  ;D

Can't wait for next Tuesday...and Plymouth away!
