Title: Blackburn Away
Post by: guest48 on December 05, 2017, 14:15:58 pm
I know that quite a few are looking to visit Ewood Park, where we haven't played for a long time but this fixture is in danger of being a mid week game. Sat 27th Jan is the date of the 4th round of the FA Cup, if Blackburn get through their replay against Crewe, they were 3-0 up before getting 2 sent off, they are then at home to Championship strugglers Hull City in the 3rd round, they win that and we're head North for a night game.

No chance I'd go on a Tuesday night, that would be a blow to making a rare visit to Ewood Park.

I see Blackburn won their replay so only Hull City can save us from a Tuesday night trip to Lancashire in January or February.

Only place of the 92 I've never been. Does Blackburn have street lights anyone know?

Oh and what about a Cafe Nero?
Bit pricey and awkward to get to whether Saturday or week night tbf. Can get back to Preston (by train) quicker from Accrington, with the ground being so much closer to the station than Ewood Park.

I've only got the London stadium (West Ham) to complete my 92 again!. They do have streetlights in Blackburn but they might be gas powered.
There are trains back to Preston but none early enough to get you back down here

You didn't answer the Cafe Nero question!  ;D

Also haven't been to the London Stadium...but having followed West Ham through the mid eighties to early nineties...Upton Park will suffice!

If night game, probably stay over in Preston. Few of us did that for the 1-0 win at Accrington when nearly out of the league!

I work with a few Hammers, and they really dont like the place. Poor line of sight, too far from the pitch, and thus, very difficult to get an atmosphere going, unless they play Chelsea or Spurs, when it becomes toxic due to a lack of police inside the ground. They were the moans of Alan the brickie, who with his wife, used to babysit JED a few years back. Apparently, he was stubborn as a child as well. Not relevant I know, but I just thought that I would mention it.  ;D

Don't worry, the last six or so posts haven't been relevant! Give it three or four weeks, some twat will start a new thread (Blackburn away) because they can't be bothered to check if one is running already...and ask some pathetically banal question like;
Does anyone know a good place to park?

It's what an awayday is all about...finding a suitable parking place!  ;D

Try it someday...you might get some idea of where you actually travel to!

And why the snidy OCFC pals comment? They will be watching OCFC. NTFC pals from Northampton and Swindon for this one!  ;)

From what I can see, Blackburn played a 4-3-3 on Saturday, with Bradley Dack on the right wing. If they do the same and we're there for a point, I'd be tempted to move Turnbull to left back and Poole back in the central defence. I'd prefer to see us go all out with HB and GA in attempt to overwhelm Blackburn.

That’s not a bad shout - either that or like I said before we could go to 3 cbs with Bunney and Facey at wingback. I’m hoping that Cardiff might come in again before Saturday for Dack - there’s rumours that they’ve had a £4 million bid turned down today. The other we have to keep quiet is mulgrew who we were lucky was a late withdrawal for the recent home match.

I Can see Buchs returning for this one in a 4-5-1 and being told to stay back and let the midfield try to hit Blackburn on the break, probably Foley and Hoskins first half and bring on the 2 new wide men with fresh legs for the second.

I wouldn’t rule this formation out into the future , but I doubt very much he would try it out against Blackburn away !
Especially as two of the centre halves are injured .
JFH is a conservative manager and is more likely to play another defensive midfield player like McWilliams or Poole .

Yes i realise that but to try a new formation out against such a strong side away from home could be disastrous.
Remember when Page did it at London road ? I have never seen so many players not knowing what they were doing on a football pitch .

I think it's wise to be conservative when you have a chance of 1/3 points with the formation, however Blackburn have scored 25 at home and conceded 12. I think games like this are worth an attacking approach. I'd maybe match their 4-3-3, with Ariyibi, Long and Pereira and Grimes, O'Toole and Crooks in midfield and go for it. You have creativity from Grimes/Crooks and strength/holdup play from O'Toole. This risk would be not being well drilled enough. Still, much more options now with the natural wingers.

You don't change a winning formula. All the squad changes and a new debutant each game is really keeping the opposition on their toes.

If we changed the team to an unfamiliar lineup/formation and got hammered it'd really set us back. Another good fighting performance would help keep the momentum rolling.

On another note, approaching 600 tickets sold. Would hope to get to 1,000.

No, quite simply Whalley Range and half of Blackburn is becoming/has become almost exclusively a muslim area, without the intergration that can be found in Leicester.
One consequence is the fastest closure of pubs of anywhere nationally.
Go onto catch up for the rest!

The map that featured in the programme seemed to indicate the Asian population predominated in the north eastern quarter of the town, so in that sense not totally different from Leicester.

The guy who bottled giving us the most blatant of penalties in the 90th minute at Wigan  ???

Berto should be given a start this game and with his runs towards the box he may win the odd free kick for Grimes the shoot from. Set pieces is where we will hurt them being such a tall powerful team.

As Blackburn played a 4-3-3 last week with Dack on the right, I wondered if we would move Turnbull over to left back to cope and bring Poole back into central defence and maybe that's the case. Difficult game, if we can be in a good position come the second half and bring on our natural wingers then maybe we could earn a point, or steal 3.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't? Last week Jimmy was cristicised precisely for bringing them on and losing "shape" and defensive capability. I think he got it right today in bringing on Powell first as he's potentially a better defender, though he didn't have a great game to be honest.

I think it's a bit harsh to criticise JFH on the back of a very respectable point against a team who haven't lost at home since September. As someone said a while back, today was a free hit and we now have a point we didn't expect to have at the start of the day.

Still, it does show the progress we've made in January if we're complaining about not beating the team second place in the table away from home!

Didn't really expect anything so a point is a bonus. Keeps the unbeaten run going but we're not out of the woods yet especially if those below us win their games in hand.

Next 3 games vital as all very winable on paper.

Powell has to up his work rate....no good losing the ball in a good position and then trotting back behind their player without an attempt to win the ball back.

Workrate in general is a lot better, can’t see what Hoskins is doing in that team any more though!
As the balls were flying across our box I was happy to take a point, but having JJ to score first and a 2-1 win which would have netted me a grand and a half I was desperate to see is attacking more rather than defending the point!!

A good day out, great support, decent ground and nice pies....now time for the long train trip back!

We had to get the ball to who ever was there. Regrettably Powell was no good but he slotted into defensive duties. I would say that JFH got it right in not selecting an attacking wide player.
Incidentally fort O’Donnell gave since Smith; the best display of time wasting seen this season.

Just seen the goals on SSN, think Poole maybe getting a rollicking, got caught under the ball then went to kick it, when a back header may have been the better option. Probably why we were linked with that Heneghen fella.
Still, a cracking result.

A good day out and a great battling point, pity Poole blazed over, that really was a good chance. It was a long last 20mins, pity we couldn't have got forward more, but they were coming at us wave after wave , although they didn't threaten that much in front of goal. We are now starting to look a good team , what a difference a month makes.

My unqualified point of view is that if Blackburn go for broke, like they decided to with their 57th minute substitutions, then we have an opportunity to counter without committing bodies forward, through the speed of HP or GA. Hoskins and Powell's defending isn't a noticeable quality, nor can they pick up the ball in their own half and beat multiple players with speed and skill. I think it was a long time to hold out for with minimal attacking threat and we just scraped it.

Not really criticisms, just talking points. I believe Hasslebank has weathered a few storms and done a great job through January.

Not sure I get any of the we might of got 3 points - perhaps because we scored first and Blackburn second half had most of the possession & always pressing forward so a long ball or a rare run at them might have resulted in an against the run of play winner - but for me JFH got it exactly right - played how some suggest here I think a 2-1 or even 3-1 loss was more likely - Blackburn were the better side which means a point is a good result and I think a massive credit to the managers, players and supporters for bringing that point home - not expected so we can call that one countermeasure for our goal difference.

I wasn’t one of the 292 at Plymouth that night but I have been to Plymouth, Carlisle and Hartlepool for midweek night matches. Hell I was one of the sub 100 crowd in Torquay for an LDV game. People circumstances change. I have work and family commitments which restricts my away days. In fact yesterday was my third of the season, the least games in nearly 25 years. Does it make me less of a supporter? Of course not. I have to pick and choose away games so it’s fairly local ones, big cup games or new grounds for me these days I’m afraid!

Correct it doesn't matter - supporters come in all shapes and sizes in respect of other commitments

I see barely 3 away games most seasons but never miss a Saturday home and have a round trip of over 1000 miles for my troubles - the mark of a good supporter is the commitment for life - attendance might vary (sometimes even the interest) but you never ever go to the dark side and support another club.................

Mowbray saying they picked out a weakness on our right side ....
Cheeky f**ker . I assume he means Hoskins . Still didn’t create many chances though .
The next step for us is to believe in some of our attacking flair and take the game to the opposition rather than nullify them . It would be good to see the three wingers start to come alive .

After about 10 mins it looked like JFH asked Hoskins to play a bit deeper.

And then when Powell came on,  we looked very vulnerable.

It was no surprise that their left back was given their MOM.

You have a point but Rach's situation is typical of a supporter. Its ok for you, unmarried and plenty of time to be an ale expert. Any supporter (including a few Chinese supporters) who took the trouble to get to Blackburn are "diehards" just by merely getting there.

I did enjoy watching us go a goal up and then set out our stall to just hang on and claw something from a lively Blackburn side.
At times we gave the ball away too quickly and few willing  to carry it forward to take the pressure off the back 4 but they stood strong and earned the point.
Poole had a glorious chance to put us 2 up to steal the 3 points but got under it but on the whole a very decent point.
Now it looks like all the struggling sides are picking up points, so expect many more defending masterclasses before were safe.

After about 10 mins it looked like JFH asked Hoskins to play a bit deeper.

And then when Powell came on,  we looked very vulnerable.

It was no surprise that their left back was given their MOM.

I thought Hoskins did ok in the role he had and was effective particularly 1st half even took the fight to them when circumstances permitted. I agree on Powell; looked unfit and/or not up for it.

Interesting Jimmy said that he thought Blackburn’s right hand side was their strength which is why Bunny played in midfield .
Maybe we forced them to play down our right hand side intentionally .
Powell is an athlete but he needs to get his head straight and confidence up .
Hoskins needs to lift his head more when he plays .
Then there’s Berto who no one knows anything about yet ...

I agree with this - why cant you be so direct/explicit on other matters?

Just to gauge how well the back four played is reflected in how many saves that O'Donnell had to make - quite remarkable. I strongly believe that Hoskins, Crooks.O'Toole, Grimes etc all played their part. It was risk to bring on Powell who quite frankly disappointed, but rather than a gung ho winger he went for Powell. All you can say on the day it worked. Grimes I thought had a slow start; being hustled off the ball, but grew into the game beating two or three players on a sixpence - did ok against good opposition.
Crooks on the other hand chose this game to show some sublime skill; dummying three players left trailing in his wake. The crowd loved that piece of skill. A word for O'Donnell who made a few good saves one of which even had their Goalie clapping! His time wasting was something else; the purist's on here would 'disdain' it! But most of us cheered! Best defensive play by a NTFC side for over 10 years.

Excellent defending, very happy to see the team digging in for very well hard earned point. Hoskins was under a lot of pressure 2nd half when Blackburn starting attacking down our right side and was quite rightly replaced.

The amount of arrogance on their forum was unbelievable , seems they might have been taken down a peg.

Just been having a good chuckle at their message board. 'A home draw Vs Northampton. The embarrassing ignominy.' said one poster, failing to realize they ent  beaten us in a league game for 51 years! ;D ;)

Yes, on their forum, almost to a man (or woman) accusing the Cobblers of dark arts (hate that expression) yet fail to acknowledge the five minutes added in the first half and six in the 2nd ffs!

For balance, the Blackburn fans in the excellent Black Bull up in the hills overlooking the town, were top fans! A Northampton based quiz, great ales (£2.80  :D)...and the £4 taxi rolling up to collect us just as we got off at Cherry Tree!

NTFC not sending tkts up to Rovers (mine anyway) had me fuming (£46 at mo)...but that aside, top, top day!

He didn't look like an athlete when he lost the ball to their full back and just jogged back rather than making a serious effort to chase back.

I was thinking the same Roger but in hindsight I think that was him full pelt.

Id agree but he is built like an athlete , even if he thinks like someone that works on Debenhams make up counter

The Blackburn "fans" who continue to pelt the opposing teams goalkeeper with coins etc seem to be getting away with it. Dock the club 30 points I say. Some of the most arrogant fans I have ever witnessed so from now on my second team will be whoever is playing Blackburn. s*** little town in a crater .

I'll be positively roaring them on, Tue night against Walsall!

If Blackburn fans are amongst the most arrogant you've come across, then Frankly, (see what I did there?  ;D) I'd get travelling a bit more!

I have traveled plenty. Leeds fans tend to be ....... but some of the stuff written over the the weekend by Blackburn fans has moved them ahead. They are born of god and we should reside in Beelzebub's aresehole. Liverpool remain the nicest fans I have met along with Grimsby fans and Sunderland fans.

Grimsby fans ??? not the ones I bumped into. Torquay fans and rotherham stewards top the charts for me.

Did you say sorry when you bumped in to them and offer to replace any drinks they may have split as a result?

Yes, also read their forum. However, 10-15 of us had the pleasure of Blackburn fans' company (as I've already mentioned) in the excellent Black Bull before the game...anything but arrogant!

Opinions yes, but on a nationwide survey, you are not going to get your chosen ones even in the top 30!
Luton, Oxford, Pompey just to name a few in the lower echelons will beat them on the self entitlement front!

For outright knowledge and lack of Billy Big B****x...yes, many would agree and have Sunderland fans right up there!

Yes.  ::) The ones I spoke with on the way back to the car were less friendly saying we should be a non league team and a team as big as them should not ever have to play in a division as low. They were not joking either. No doubt Walsall will be another non league team to annoy them.

The worst ones that I have ever met, were wigan, England away in Zurich, for the Liechtenstein game, in 2003.
What an absolute bunch of bell ends. I have never liked them since.

Liechtenstein away, we stayed in Zurich for that one too. Kicked off big time the night before the game, also in Liechtenstein as the game started. Quite a few there that day without tickets of which I was one. Watched the game in a bar in the end.

Must be something about the location, as Bolton fans last season were so far up their own arses they made Oxford fans look rational.
