The signing we've been waiting (well hoping) for, well pleased with that.

Wonder how much we paid?

He already knows how to celebrate in front of the North Stand ;)

Dont think it’s massive - no where near transfer record according to Casey. A bit of a gamble as his good form is all recent. Wonder if it changed how we play, not sure I’d want to move O’Toole around.

Always reassuring when the selling teams fans think the players quality.

We really haven't messed about this transfer window. JFH must have been promised a hefty budget to tempt him here... and it seemingly looks like we've signed everyone he wanted. Really looking forward to the rest of the season.

So why is Casey saying it's definitely not a club transfer record (which is what, £250,000?). Did Scunny managed to negotiate us down to less than £250k??

First time I saw him play I thought he was a right pain in the rectum. Now we can hopefully inflict that pain on others. Other teams will hate to play us with him and Jon Joe on the pitch.

Well done the club. A few more bums on seats this weekend no doubt.

Fantastic signing and a statement of intent. JFH is moulding a great side that can escape relegation fears and look upwards from next season. Could do with moving 5 or 6 on now though and trimming the wage bill.

There's nothing like watching van Veen's goal against us last season that makes you realise what a poor goalkeeper Adam Smith became. A big mistake to reject the rumoured £700k offer made for him in January 2016.

If this is true, then that has to go down as a mistake:

(From Wiki)
he scored four league goals for the side and his performance attracted interests from Chinese Super League side Henan Jianye, who had their £4 million bid rejected from Sc***horpe United.[38][39] Manager Graham Alexander confirmed that the bid was actually made and said the bid was rejected, citing his desire to keep him.

Seeing as there is talk about pronunciation, I thought I'd point out the V in van isn't capitalised. I expect to see KvV or Kevin van Veen used from now on. you can copy and paste it if you want.

Dutch 'van' is never capitalised.

This is not a moan, very happy with the signing but I did find it interesting seeing the stats on the BBC articles about the Van Veen and Revell transfers. Revs actually had a better goal rate for us than KVV had for Scunny (a goal every 4.4 games v a goal every 5).

It would be great if KVV is more prolific for us but I also hope that he isn't judged solely on goals. That seemed to be the biggest stick to beat Revs with.

Technically you are right, but as a club we have had some good goal scorers/strikers. For me any Cobbs player who scores over 10 league goals a season fits the bill. This is why I liked Bayo. Hope this lame excuse helps.

Ps forgot about Richards

It’s a comment and not a moan IMO! The main problem with Revell is that he was ‘old’ when signed. Was ok when scoring but other than that he did not offer much. Then he had a lengthy spell on side lines! Perhaps he was the epitome of the journeyman tag?

I think a fairer statistic is goals per games started. Van Veen made a large number of sub appearances for Scunny, some of which may have been 5 minute cameos.

20 league goals in 63 league starts is a very respectable return.

Yes, all very true. Probably the most encouraging thing about the van Veen signing is that we are getting him as he enters his peak years and we have contracted him through them as well. Makes a nice change.

Revs work rate was always top drawer but it was sometimes his downfall. He would benefit from being a little more selfish and staying more central sometimes IMO. I would think he will do well for Stevenage, a move that suits everyone.

Yes a very fair point. I don't know how accurate the stats are online for League One players but I just had a quick look at both of them on TransferMarkt. For all games they have played in League One van Veen has scored a goal every 280 minutes, Revell a goal every 330. A definite improvement for sure but not as much as I thought it might be.

Anyway, as I said at the beginning, this is not to complain about the van Veen signing or Revs going, I'm happy with both deals really. I just hope, if he keeps scoring at a similar rate for us he doesn't get grief for not being the mystical "20 goal a season" man people seem to want.

Title: Re: Welcome Kevin Van Veen

Only if he plays every minute of every game  ;)

I'd happily take 10 from him a season, provided he is creating chances for other, bossing opposition centre backs etc. You'd think JJOT and our wide players will benefit from his presence, as will Long if we go two up front.

Title: Re: Welcome Kevin Van Veen

Steve Howard didn't score a great deal for us, but when he left he was prolific. BUT when he was with us he was still immense in the role he performed.

'Super' Johnny Gayle is another classic example of a striker who was brilliant for us and never prolific. Its all about what he brings as an overall package, we know from his profile he isn't a goal poacher aka Jamie Forrester (example).

If anyones unduly worried about the stats, just check up on Longs!  ;D

Title: Re: Welcome Kevin Van Veen
Post by: guest1269 on January 31, 2018, 11:46:25 am
Seeing the video of some of his goals - 50% were typical strike/poacher goals - strong in the air and intuitively in the right place - but the other 50% are goals that came from nowhere & these are the goals (think Ricky Holmes) that separate a top side from the rest - coupled with his age and a proper contract I'm very optimistic again.

Anyone saying KVV and Revell are on par in terms of ability needs to give their head a wobble. It was painfully obvious that Richards and Revell were no longer capable of playing in league one anymore, particularly in Rico's case.

Flemish (Belgian) 'Van' is always capitalised.

"The "v" is written in lower case, except when the surname is used as standalone (when the first name or initials are omitted), in which case it is capitalised, as in "de schilder Van Gogh" ("the painter Van Gogh").[2] In Dutch, compound terms like "de Van Goghtentoonstelling" ("the Van Gogh exhibition") the "v" is capitalised, unless the connection between the person and the concept is or has become very weak."

I don't think the two are anywhere near on a par, I merely posted the stats because I was quite surprised how close they were in goals per minute in League One. Particularly given how much Revell was derided for his poor goal record.

As I said though I'm well chuffed with the signing. A lot of people on here have constantly posted about the need to sign a 20 goal a season striker and it doesn't look like he will be that. But I firmly believe he is the sort of player that will not only perform well but also help the team function better, which is kinda the point really.

Very interesting interview with KvV on Scunny radio .
He was clearly surprised at not being offered a contract by them but seemed to speak from the heart and comes across as a straight forward bloke .
We are now competing with the likes of Scunny for players and so the expectation moving forward is that we get the results that those sort of teams are expected to get .
We have started well on that road though so far .

Less than a month in to his NTFC career, he's broken.  :-\

Took a kick to the knee... happens in contact sports sadly.

I think it’s fair to say that we are absolutely screwed if anything happens to long.

We could always recall the Deanosaur. ;)

I think calling him a striker is very generous indeed (plus the fact that he can’t even get into the Stevenage team).

He might do now that the Revmeister has been red carded?

Worrying news about VV
I was looking at him to turn things around for us .
I can’t see any of the other new signings making a big enough difference .
Facey can come in but Moloney is playing well anyway .
I think we are in a bit of trouble here .
It’s down to the old school and then getting it together
.

Maybe time to throw Joe on the bench at least if he is back fit.

Absolutely no chance of that happening.

With regards to old school we cannot recall for example the two R’s as they were ‘sold’! Waters perhaps? Revell might have been useful!

Agreed - I didn't say it was the club's fault.

Have I missed something?

As far as I can see jimmy has said V V is 50/50 for Saturday,  people are reacting like his out for the rest of the season.

Have I missed something?

Yes, you missed the fact that people on here grossly over react to everything.

"Kevin has had a scan and while there is a small injury, I don’t think it’s anything too big,” he said.

“I don’t think he will make the weekend but we don’t know yet when he will be back.

“Hopefully he will heal quickly, he can play through the pain and he is very eager to do that but at the minute the pain is just a bit too much.

I think the problem is those kind of veiled statements usually result in us not seeing the player again for 2 or 3 months.

Knee ligament injuries are rarely "not that serious". We'll see, let's hope I'm wrong.

Knee injuries are notoriously slow healing , even though this seems minor .
JFH does seem to understate injuries a bit .
Also , hamstrings are a minimum four weeks and we continually say players are ready after two weeks .
Pierre was definitely played before he was ready and suffered the consequences

"People on here grossly over-react"?

Well, we were initially told that he'd suffered a dead leg.....and he was rated as doubtful for the following game......he has now missed two and will miss a few more now the club have disclosed that he's actually suffered a medial ligament injury.

These types of injury are rated from 1 to 3...with a grade one taking from a few days to a week and a half to heal, a grade 2 taking from two to four weeks, and a grade 3 four to eight weeks.

That is just recovery time...then add in back to light training, intensive training and finally match fit.

When you see his name on the team sheet, until then we will use the XI/XIV that are available, fit and have been selected by JFH.
Some of you get too involved...
