Title: Best ever Cobblers side (in your lifetime)
Post by: Snow Dive Larry on March 07, 2018, 10:38:39 am
Forgive me if this has been done before, and feel free to send me to the Forum naughty step if it has, but I'm interested to see the wide range of people's best ever Cobblers elevens that would fit into a good match day side (e.g. you might not have Bayo partnering Big John Gayle and Poul Hubertz up front as amazing as that would be to see!)

So your best balanced sides based on your favourite ever Cobblers players. Look forward to seeing the range of elevens from different decades!

I'll kick off with:

Great shouts with Gyepes - he's one that slipped my mind but I can't justify replacing either Sammo or Razor!

I'm having that Fred - my team exactly (and for the same time period)... would need Gayle on the bench though - him and Bayo up front would be a wet dream.

Tricky to answer too many good players!

Bayo or Hubertz
JJOT or Hunter
Warburton or Gypes
Sampson or Carlisle

Sounds like a riddle for GPC to solve based on form, ability and season circumstances.

I wish we got to see more of him, but Kyle Walker is one of the first name on my team sheets. I guess the same can be said about Gabor Gyepes too.

Bunn

Walker Chambers Gyepes Buchanan

Holmes O'Toole Hargreaves Smith

Richards Bayo

That was the only reason I didnít go for gyepes or walker - they were class but only played for us 15 and 9 times respectively.

Crikey Sainty thought Brian Harvey was a few decades earlier. Like your sub of Frankie too. Not a criticism just innocent comment. 8)

ps and the late great Cliff Holton too, easily our best ever centre-forward. In fact, I support this selection as I just have to succumb to the temptation. Everitt as well - the original ladies man! Or was that Alec Ashworth? No Theo Foley the 100yd run up penalty specialist? Why have so many forgotten Eddie Eddie?

1997 onwards. In terms of a balanced and complemented side, I would go for:

Bunn

Crowe
Chambers
Gyepes
Buchanan

Holmes
O'Toole
Brad Johnson
Jacobs

Akinfenwa
Forrester

I'd be shoehorning in Sammo and Martin Smith into my all-time favourite XI though in place of Gyepes and Jacobs.

IMO the LB selection and two centre halves are a bit suspect 8) The choice of midfield is well thought out and will work. The selection of Bayo and Forrester will also. Little and large!  Good.

Yeh, imagine if we had a Frank Large now to come on after 60 minutes and terrorise the opposition.

Don't quite know what's too suspect about Chambers and Gyepes, one of whom is the current captain of a Championship side and the other widely regarded as one of the most talented defenders we've ever had, but each to their own I guess ;D

I do love a little and large partnership up front though!

The Penalty King - Bryan Harvey?????

Frank Large has to be part of any side, ever.

Left-field (get the play on words?)  Dixie McNeil

There was just something about Graham Felton sprinting full-tilt to get a cross in, only to be caught by the crowd in the Hotel End (for those that have never experienced a real football ground with standing, folk stood down in the depths below pitch level).  Or, is my view distorted by the number of times he has gotten me LBW at cricket (he was a great fast bowler)?  I always stood in awe to face him.......

Don Martin for every era as a total midfielder.

John Clarke was the best No4 I have ever seen.  He made Norman Hunter look like a woooooosssss.......

Your midfield and fwd selection is well thought out. The only thing to do is select by number of nominations for each position. Canít remember K Welch being mentioned?

Addendum:
McPherson and Samson as Central Defenders
Gregory and Neal as full backs.
That should do it.

One of my favourite memories of Keith Welch was a friendly/testimonial match played at Sixfields. He had the reputation for being a real laid back character and when he came onto the pitch he brought with him a little stool, sat in the goal mouth and started reading a paper when the game kicked off.

Was possibly a Wembley 97 reunion match or similar?

Does anyone know if anyone can beat Richard Hills average of a goal every 1.86 games?

Others goals per game to note:
Steve Massey 2.4
Trevor Morley 2.74
Scott Mcleish 2.64
Frank Large 2.5
Paul Stratford 2.91
Ian Benjamin 2.54
Marco Gabbiadini 4.8
Bobby Barnes 2.64
Bayo Akinfenwa 2.36
Tony Adcock 2.67
Pat Gavin 3.5
Jim Hall 3.54
Marc Richards 3.14
Steve Terry 10.64 (whoosh)

When compiling this list I was shocked to discover that another of my favourite past players and Hotel End favourite Andy McGowan died in May 1999 aged 42 after he stopped breathing during a routine leg operation.

Did Slowe ever make an appearance? He's exempt if not. I was toying with Chris O'Donnell for his 45 minute appearance back in 1987. And I'dreplace Darren Harmon with Gary Deegan

That's a good point actually, according to Wikipedia he didn't make an appearance - the mind plays tricks as I was sure I witnessed him in action, might have been for the reserves I suppose. I quite liked Darren Harmon - he was a little Rottweiler.
