ps Freddie how did you come to pick Ramscar as your nom de plume?

As a kid I just loved watching those slow rolling penalties on their way into goal JUST inside the post.
Every supporters heart was in mouth, was it going in or not, would the keeper get there in time to save it.
He may have missed one or two but I never witnessed one.
Great times.

Easy 5-0 to us this. Plymouth are s***.

So, Plymouth will be looking to get the ball in from the bye-line as many times as possible, hoping to bundle the ball home.

We need our best defensive full-backs playing, and a hard-tackling midfielder (McW or JO'T) who can cover the D when they get into the last 3rd (to stop any follow-ups from under-pressure clearances).

That's aside from their ability to drive forward with the ball from midfield.

But, the best form of defence is attack (although many managers get that the wrong way around - eg, Mourinho).  So, we need players who can peel wide into the gaps left by their advancing wing-backs/wingers, and who can drive forward with the ball in the spaces that they will leave.

This is going to be all about stonewall defending on the half-way line, and playing in behind their wide defence as early as possible.

If we don't do this, then, we may come unstuck......

We need to make sure Carey can't run the game, not stand off him like we did for Fosu in the Charlton game.

Whoever is our right-side midfielder closes him down when he on the ball, shepherding him towards our right-back, who sends him into row G.  Simple.

They've sold their allocation, well over a week before the game!! Perhaps we could do with a bigger away end?  ;D

Recent away followings include 1802 to Oxford in February, 995 to Shrewsbury, 605 to Fleetwood and 3,034 to Charlton last month.

They are clinging onto the last playoff spot following the 0-0 draw with Portsmouth, the last two playoff places look to be being contested by 5 clubs all separated by just three points.

Crucially for Plymouth they have a game in hand on the rest of them....but 4 of their last 5 games are away from home.

Row W surely

If you can find Row W, then be ready to cushion his fall...... :)

I tried to make the row position relevant to our current ground, without raising the ire of the "Redevelopment" crowd.

But, now it's out in the open: Yes, we need to develop our ground, so that our Full-Backs can properly kick the opposing wingers into Oblivion!

This really is a game where the Sixfields faithful have got to get behind the team and intimidate Plymouth .
Our side lacks confidence but I think will react to a positive atmosphere .
Whatever our hang ups about certain players and the side in general , we have to forget them for this game and don’t get on players backs if they make a mistake .
At the same time , some of our lads need to put it in and be brave - show that the club means something to them .
I hope we play two up front , but it’s possible we may not have two front players available !

I expect a similar team to that at Bury, although they will need to close down rather than standing off. I would make a few adjustments though.

O'Donnell
Facey   Taylor   Barnett   Buchanan
Crooks   McWilliams  O'Toole   Bunney
Grimes
Long

Subs: Cornell, Poole, Foley, Hoskins, Moloney - if fit, Luckassen - if fit, Bridge

I would rather have Bunney on the left than Powell as he will help defensively aand is as least as good going forward. I worry about Buchanan's lack of pace these days. At all costs we have to stop them scoring which is why I would want to see as strong a midfield as possible. If I thought it likely to happen I would replace Grimes with Foley but he seems the player guaranteed a start however he plays. We will get chances as they need the points as much as we do, so will press forward at every opportunity. It will be a case of hitting on the break. The longer we can keep them at bay the better our chance of doing that.

I agree that Bunney is more of a threat than Powell but it depends on who is up for the challenge .
Bunney wasn’t in the squad on Saturday and I haven’t read he was injured .
Crooks has to come in if fit but would you replace MacWilliams with him ? Crooks and Grimes doesn’t really work and I doubt JJOT will make way .
The problem is only Long is fit up front unless Lucky is back and up for it or VV is back and up for it .
I’m not sure about Barnett and Taylor either . Maybe Poole should play instead of Barnett .

Whether you/we like it or not I would imagine that Hoskins will be a certainty after his goal scoring cameo/performance on Saturday through the middle. It’s telling that Austin went for him as replacement for van veen and not Long.

It seems we are now onto our 3rd manager this season who prefers Barnett to Poole.

Hoskins through the middle is a different proposition to Hoskins wide .
He is a threat playing deep if we play that system .
It’s his finishing that has been the problem there but goals breed confidence .
To play him behind Long would mean dropping JJOT back into deeper midfield . I’m not saying that’s a bad thing ...,,

I too would rather see Poole than Barnett, but think Leon is there on experience.

Although, as we’ve seen with Taylor and Barnett...both are susceptible to at least one major unforced error a match! Easy to say now, but a wily Jason Taylor type DM in front of the centre backs would have helped us pick up a few more points this season. On Saturday we need JJOT to get a big meaty challenge in early doors (a la Shrewsbury at home) to lift the crowd.

Aaron Pierre can’t be far off a return now?

I have said it (for most of the season) that Grimes and JJOT should have been swapped; JJOT in front of the back four and Grimes in the more advanced creative position without having to worry about what's going on behind him.  Which would allow him to provide the ammunition and killer balls for our wider players and those through the middle running off him.  (See his advanced position to supply Hoskins on Saturday)
JJOT would naturally be a forward threat when able to do so from DM.

Pierre is just as much a liability I'm afraid. At least 2 new centre backs are required if we go down.

I thought Austin said that Poole was ill on Saturday - having said that he probably would still have gone with Barnett against bury for the experience factor (even though he’s always got a clanger in him) and the fact that he used to play for them. I’d still be tempted to go with Poole at defensive midfield but I wouldn’t imagine Austin will change it, the most interesting selection will be where he plays Hoskins - will it be through the middle where he impressed on Saturday or will he shunt him wide to accommodate crooks.

When selecting centre halves I think you also have to consider who is left / right footed .
If Taylor plays , I think the natural partner is Barnett or Pierre whereas Poole is right footed .
It would be great to have Pierre back but I suspect it’s a choice between Barnett or Turnbull .
Three at the back now seems to have been abandoned !

The same Pierre that was consistently performing at league 2 level and had a trial at a championship club before we signed him?

I don't think we have seen enough of him this season to form a valid opinion to be honest.

He was quite flaky to begin with, but had just started to show good form before getting injured.

I agree we should give him plenty more time before making a judgement, I for one will be glad to have him back when we start next season.

I'm sure he'll be better in L2 next season and would certainly keep him on, but there's a reason he's never player higher than L2 before signing for us, and also why the Championship club passed on him this summer.

You are right that we haven't seen enough of him yet, but from what I've seen he has made a few clangers (which is what I was replying to in the first place - not calling him a poor footballer).

I'm struggling to find any optimism about Plymouth. They always beat us at Sixfields and combine that with them striving for the play offs and our recent form I can't see beyond an away win.

I hope I'm wrong obviously as it would set up the Walsall game as huge but I think our season will be over at 16:45 saturday.

1400 Argyle in the away section, some talk of them coming into home areas!
Also think they are beaming game back to their Barn at Home Park (as they did for Oxford Utd game, where allocated 1800).

Also (Barton noteing comparative travel prices for Posh) they are bringing a 'Senior' coach...£34 Inc breakfast!

Looking at the latest interview with Austin on the chron site it says that the players aren’t due to return to training until Thursday - is that normal for this point in the season or should they be in working on fitness/shape for a crucial match?  Looking at Saturday I appreciate we’ve got a poor record against Plymouth but a crumb of comfort might be that they are not great on the road - they’ve lost as many as they’ve won. One things for sure we are going to have to be clinical as/when we get a chance and not wasteful like we’ve been so often this season.

This is going to be a very interesting day for Caroline Densley...can she stay professional? I've found it hugely irritating to hear (the whole team to be fair) them highlighting Plymouth's results to Caroline on the radio and hearing little cheers from her now and again. Fair enough if you're in different leagues but being in the same division it's just uncomfortable.

7,000 plus expected. They've sold out and are beaming the game live back at Home Park. The last chance saloon is slightly ajar for us after getting my head around the inevitable I have started to believe again. They have their influential striker Taylor out injured. A bit of good fortune for us. We look terribly lightweight up top as per. An edgy 1-0 win it could be.

The problem with our team is we have so little character or confidence that if we go a goal behind then we are beaten, and to be honest I think that applies to both on the pitch and in the stands at the moment.

If we can get our noses in front then the confidence boost from last week's win might mean we can get a result today, but I fear an early goal the other way will see us collapse.

Will happily take any kind of win today, we will do well to get a point I think.

Hopefully we have a go at them and keep it up, rather than a quick first five minutes and then retreat back into our own half for the rest of the game.

Be interesting to see if Crooks is fit enough to make the eleven, and if Sammy get the spot behind Long.

Crooks.                                     Powell

I would rather see Bunney on the left than Powell. He would offer more defensively and at least as much going forward.

Is that really going to be Hoskins up front on his own with jjot supporting - 2 non strikers in a game which we must win and score goals? A damning indictment on Long and van veen if they can’t get in for this.

Title: Re: Pummeling The Pilgrims 21st April (H)
Post by: Martin on April 21, 2018, 13:10:16 pm
It's a game we mustn't lose. Playing Hoskins as a lone striker makes sense. We have options on the bench if needed. We have to keep a clean sheet and cannot afford to go gung-ho from the start.

We’ve gotta score at some point (probably twice!) and not sure about mustn’t lose. There’s no way 7 points would be enough with our GD.

I agree - if the great escape is on we need 3 points today to get the momentum building.  My concern about Hoskins up front is that his pace is his biggest weapon but by all accounts Plymouth like to sit deep and counter, if there’s no space for Hoskins his skills aren’t going to create chances.

Why couldn’t we put this much effort into the rest of the season?

Decent performance so far, don’t think they have had a clear shot that ROD has had to deal with.

We look pacy and Crooks our side seems to be working, even when he drifts inside.

They are too dangerous for us to sit back, hope we continue to attack like this.

Best I've seen this season. Fantastic performance. Well done players and well done Dean Austin. I've seen nearly all our games this season live or mostly on iplayer and this was what we've wanted to see all season. The shame is this performance, with pretty much the team that started the season, shows that we are good enough for league 1 with the right system, shape and management - oh and of course the small matter of everyone really fighting for the cause rather than JFH's version of this. I'm confident that we might just be able to win our last two games but will it be enough?

Brilliant. It's no surprise to me that a good team on paper can be a good team on the pitch when they take the game to the other team and play up the damn pitch.

All our frailties lie whilst sitting back as a unit/non.

What a transformation, Hoskins was a machine today - just a shame he didn’t get the goal he deserved. Well done to Dean, Jon and Melville (who was on the bench) who obviously put together a plan and to all of the players who carried it out. Superb and should have been 5 or 6.

Absolutely outstanding - to a man, there was the passion, desire and application we've been missing all season. If we are going, we're going down fighting and that's all we can ask for at this stage. Interesting to hear Austin on the radio saying that he told the players when he took over that attitude and desire were a prerequisite for doing that job and it should never have to be brought up. He's clearly got them playing for him and we can only hope it's not too late.

Two points behind Walsall and Oldham with both to play - it's tantalising! Though not forgetting their crucial game in hand. Wimbledon aren't completely uncatchable if we win our final two and they go to Wigan next.

All in all, a cracking day and one that we've all been missing at home for so, so long. First time in ages that the title of the match thread matches the outcome too  ;D

A great performance and a really enjoyable match. It's slightly galling that they have been capable of that type of performance all along but credit has to go to Austin and Brady for finally coaxing it out of them.

Sadly, I still think it's too little too late, but at least we're not going with a whimper now and, looking at the remaining fixtures, you never know...

A brilliant performance, that really was 'a 4 or 5-0'. Their keeper played brilliantly.

Bitter sweet feelings this evening. But hey ho. i've just got our Walsall tickets online.

IF and its a massive IF we do survive then it will go down as one of the very best Cobblers 'experiences'. But for now, Im still resigned to league 2 football. But today was good…celebrating that 2nd goal was the very best moment of the season.

All 8's and 9's today…mom McWilliams (loved him being subbed to get the applause) followed closely by Sam Hoskins.

A side note. Why did Plymouth continue to play such a high line? If they'd shifted their defensive line back 10 yards then that would have negated much of our threat. That seemed obvious at half time, yet they persisted with it. Balls over the top to Sam were killing them and giving us unnecessary possession deep in their final 3rd. Managers eh?!

What a brilliant performance from the team and fans, the atmosphere was awesome and must have inspired the players even more. We need to replicate this at Walsall . It was so nice to see so many smiling and happy faces , whilst getting my Walsall tickets after the game, hope has been restored with a performance like that. Everyone seemed up for it and the passion for the fight was clearly evident today , especially at the end. I too fear it may have come too late and we should have got rid of Jimmy sooner, but least we are making a really good go at staying up. Credit to Austin and Brady, you are getting so much more out of the same players , best performance of the season so far, a brilliant effort all round well done lads.

The players that are selected are those that want to play for the football club .
It was a very brave decision to play sammy on his own up front in a game like that , but it worked .
Crooks wide and MacWilliams partnering grimes also worked .
Immense credit goes to the management team

I thought I'd wait a couple of days, to see if the glorious feeling I had on leaving the ground Saturday had worn off.

It hasn't.  ;D

Every player put in 110% for us, at times we played swift, attacking football (along the ground!) and I loved that went we went 1-0 up we carried on looking for a second rather than defaulting to eleven at the back.

McWilliams showed why we should be playing him every game, I like the way he actually pulled out of a few silly challenges that he might of made before when he felt he was on his own in chasing people down. Even we he gave the ball away, the crowd willed him on to get it back and most of the time he did.

Crooks on the left and Sammy up top had me surprised when we lined up, but boy did it work. Sammy ran his socks off and although he missed some chances, was a great outlet down the channels rather than us hoofing it looking for JJ all the time. Crooks looked like the player we paid good money to land, I hope we can keep hold of him.

Powell looked an attacking force driving down the line, two assists for him and hopefully will stay injury free. The defence coped well, despite letting them in behind a couple of times, ROD didn't have a save to make until right near the end (when he made two very good ones).

A massive wave of optimism seems to have swept over us all, cannot wait to "hunt down" Walsall on Saturday. Telling that when Long came on for Sammy, it was the fastest I've seen him run and close players down all season!

Great win for us, a great win for Dean Austin, dare we dream of staying up?

It's been such a timely reminder of what this club means to us - yes we moan and moan when things are wrong but it's all born from the love we have for it. It's like your kids not listening and answering back all day but then a single "love you Daddy" at night time taking it all away.

It's still a long, long road back but Saturday proved that wherever we end up, on these big occasions where we pull something out the bag and play with pride there's no better place to be.

Great to see happy faces around Sixfields again and if we put up that fight in the final two games then we'll hopefully have a better summer than we originally would have whichever league we end up in.

Can't say I've ever heard it on my numerous visits to Home Park...more along the lines of Janner...Janner!  ;)
Is that a West Country version of Jimmy Jimmy?

You might want to take into account that Plymouth’s song is “Molly Molone” so there’s a good chance you’re flirting with an overweight 50 year old bloke from Saltash.

It’s only a bit of fun - let this serve as a cautionary tale that people’s usernames aren’t always what they seem  :-*.

It made me smile when people tried to pre guess a jfh team when knowing firstly it was impossible and  if they got it right it wouldn't give much credit.
But top marks for your prediction.
Same team for walsall?

So, was I close to getting the tactics right?

I'm getting fed up with the petty squabbles many posters have with Everbrite! Can we all just stop picking a virtual fight with him and talk about the football?

I thought the whole point of the forum was mainly so people could have petty squabbles about the football? If you are going to have them with friends, people on the coach etc you’ll have them on here. On another thread I’ve been having a spat with Beds. His philosophy is so in tune with one of my lot back home I reckon it actually is him? I’m having the same argument twice.

Just thinking about the game last Saturday ....
Can you remember a more energetic or complete midfield performance from a Cobblers central midfield player than that shown by McWilliams in recent times ?
Roy Hunter was the last one I can think of !
The boy became a man in this game

Certainly energetic, but a long way from complete. Rectifying mistakes is brilliant, but not making the mistake to begin with is even better. More games and more experience needed and hopefully he'll improve his first touch/distribution as well. Driving forward with the ball seems a strong point of his, so adding goals to his game will be a target for next season.

Hard to believe he's still a teenager!

Definitely a long way from complete as you say but it’s a long time since we have had a midfield player that can compete in the tackle and drive forward with the ball like that .
Most players at this level can’t do that .
I think we have a player in Shaun

Totally spot on - watched him as a kid and believe me providing he keeps his focus and gets the right guidance he will go further than our other “home grown” Ivan Toney
