Title: Your random Cobblers memories
Post by: Cobblersmad on October 01, 2019, 16:23:22 pm
Light hearted fun post alert!

Seeing all this wet weather reminded me of a soggy sixfields game under Boothroyd against Aldershot, where from the kick off we bombarded the Aldershot goal for five minutes, kicking towards the North Stand. I believe we won 2-0, but all I can take from that game was that random memory.

Do any of you have any random memories from any games down the years?  I cant be the only one surely to take something away from a game besides a goal or red card which has stuck in the brain for no reason.

Other random memories include:
Brent Rahim nutmegging a player with a crossfield pass
Daryn Stamp saying 'f**k off' chasing after a ball as it runs out of play
Gabbiadini and the West Stand rising up in anger as a throw goes against him
Scott Mcgleish saying 'bye bye' as he kicks the ball out of Chesters ground in the last minute

One which has always stuck with me was in the early naughties at Wigan. We were very much involved in a relegation battle and were getting trounced 3-0. News then filtered through of Bury trailing 0-2 then 1-2, before conceding a late third. Despite beholding battered, we knew we were staying up and the celebrations were brilliant in the stand. (Realise this may not count).

A Friday night loss 3-0 away at Port Vale in 2011, Bas Savage wasn't in the squad and went in goal during the warm up. Made an incredible fingertip save from Chris Arthur did his trademark moonwalk in celebration

Jan 31st 1987, London Rd, Pooterborough. Observations on the opposition’s then Manager Noel Cantwell by the away supporters (i.e us) following his less than flattering article regarding the Cobblers in the press. The most amazing atmosphere I ever experienced in one of our games.

v Leeds Utd in division 1. Our keeper Bryan Harvey kicks upfield Jackie Charlton runs forwards but does not reach ball and it bounces over his head. George Hudson who had run in the opposite direction (towards the Leeds goal) collects ball and slots it past Gary Sprake.

85/6 gave me most my memories. My first proper season with some great away days

Preston on a Friday, 17k there, John our driver nearly nodding off on the way home and me waking him as we drifted towards the central reservation...
Richard Hill at the Shay, getting piss wet thru but winning 6_3
Being first off the train at Wolves and cracking it going through that tunnel, then cracking it again every time there was a surge on that vertical terrace
Colchester's and all that yeeeeeelllow.... those t shirts with the arrow going up to a 3, haha

Also though, my lad being mascot away at Blackpool, their stewards having to move me, my mum and my 5 yr old niece out the Blackpool seats cos we celebrated Gabbi notching two

And the groundsman shoe incident at Accy a few years ago.

Tbh, my recent matchday experiences have not been good being away days in the NW. Capitulations at Fleetwood, last minute defeats at Rochdale and Bury. In fact, generally defeats everywhere from Wigan to Bolton....

I was at that Wigan game, I think the Wigan fans thought we were all mental!

Others include....

Stevie Howard finally breaking his duck for us and going nuts in celebration.

Larry's dive into the snow.

The Huddersfield game getting abandoned when the advertising hoarding fell on their fans (after Rico had finally broken his duck, actually!)

Gabbiadini getting a standing ovation after taking us apart for Darlo.

Sammo in the rain at Anfield.

Pissing myself laughing when Bayo made his debut for us and went charging down the wing - I'd never seen a sight like it!

Being star struck by bumping into the Atko era squad on a night out in Chicagos.

Sean Parrish's strike at Cardiff.

Going absolutely berserk when Gilligan scored a late equaliser away at Grimsby (and before seeing the bloke trying to put all those black and white balloons back in the big bag after he thought the ref had blown the final whistle instead of for a corner. ;D)

John Frain in the 93rd minute at Wembley.

John Hodge getting subbed 30 seconds after coming on in a testimonial (Sammo's?) and yelling "I can manage a few more minutes, boss!"

Welchy bringing out a chair and a paper to read in the second half after having so little to do in the first half in the same game.

Lots of happy memories!!

Ian Benjamin's goal v Chesterfield, and in direct opposition to his brother (Tristan?) just before he left.

What a hit!

Also, an outrageous reverse over the head flick from (I think) Eddie McGoldrick.

John Petts played in a reserve game.  The ball got kicked out on the cricket side.

Petts went after it and decided to hurdle the rope along the cricket side.  He caught his foot on the rope and fell down.  When he got up, instead of going under the rope, he tried to hurdle it again and again caught his foot and fell over the rope.

They were the days of being a student.  I was in the stands and many of the first team were there watching and were in stitches.

I was told that Alan Starling also took a cigarette when at Huddersfield.

John Gayle scoring a 'consolation' goal first leg of playoff and the look on my old mans face, otherwise a huge Villa fan who had somehow managed to get a ticket for game and join me, as we went wild on the terrace.

One of the four St John's men dropping his corner of the stretcher away at Torquay (no further injury).

Kingsmeadow away terrace. Two teenage girls of Chinese origin (?) busting into tears of laughter when MC announces our right back Nana (Grandma) to crowd.

Atmosphere and quality of football we played at Rotherham away, round before Man Utd.
To paraphrase Ronnie Moore. I didnt realize it was Real Madrid we were playing tonite ;D

Simon Sturridge going off for a poo in a game against Macclesfield in 1999 which was delayed mid game because the floodlights failed. We won 2-0.

edit: had to look up who scored. Hunter and Corazzin. Unfortunately not Sturridge.

I remember one of the first games at Sixfields where the game got delayed because there was a sink hole in the pitch. Turns out it was a hole for rugby posts or something that had been covered over with a board and then turf and soil. I remember watching a couple of blokes digging about desperately trying to sort it out and thinking at the time, this ground is a bit mickey mouse?

I think quite a few of our fans accusing then Fulham keeper Jim Stannard of "eating all the pies".

He was definitely wide of girth at that stage in his career!

Andy Liddle. He was brilliant that day. It was Bury losing which confirmed our survival, Cambridge had already been relegated.

Funnily though, we played them at home on the final day, and they hadn't won away all season. In the 94th minute, John Hodge beat about six men on his own to score and prevent them from beating us  ;D

I put an arm round John Frain's shoulder after the play-off semi and told him to go and win it  for us at Wembley...

Ian Atkins telling Carl Heggs he should have been back defending about 10 seconds after he'd run about 70 yards to create a chance in front of the north stand, "F*ck Off" said Heggsy! He was subbed about 30 seconds later.

Mine are definitely random. Firstly, a dire game against Hereford, mid nineties, in a near empty Sixfields, lost 3-1. Seeing Roy Hunter and his dad in the then Little Chef prior to a game. My son being mascot for the Crawley away game in the championship season . A restaurant on fire while the match played on and finally being part of the 7000 cobblers fans for that fa cup replay.
Hopefully many more to come , UTC

Feeling a strange warm wetness down the back of my jeans whilst standing in a packed Hotel End during the seventies and turning around to see some greebo relieving himself behind me . Then having to explain to my mum why I smelt of p*ss in the back of the cortina when she picked me up.

Getting soaked and absolutely freezing at Hartlepool away in 86/87 I think and then the supporters coach heating breaking down on the way home and not stopping shivering until about the Tuesday after the game .
Telling George Reilly he was a useless tw*t when I was about 12 when he was standing right next to me on the cricket side  and then sh* tting myself every time he came close for a throw in .

A Portsmouth fan stealing all the programmes I had been given to sell and then nearly bursting into tears when I then got told off by the bloke in the club shop over the road afterwards .

Eating an Ansell burger about 1979 and touching cloth at the back of the Hotel End because I couldn’t make it in time and one of the cubicles was out of order with the toilet paper on the pitch when I did get there

Loads, some more random than others.
Bobby Barnes asking the cricket side if anyone had a match so he could do something to his boot. Someone gave him one and quipped "we've given you a match, now you give us one".
Having to stand on the cold wet cricket outfield for the FA Cup replay with Southend in 1986 because the Hotel End was full and so were the duckboards.
Steve Terry chipping the Mansfield keeper in a 5-1 rout on a Tuesday night. Thinking we were then going to march up the table we travelled to Sc***horpe the following Saturday and promptly got hammered 7-0.
Barry Fry running down the touch line at the County Ground wearing just a pair of red shorts.
My glasses going flying in the North stand after Martin Aldridge gave us the lead in the opening match at Sixfields.
Touch line fights -Martin Wilkinson and the Swindon manager. And Ian Atkins and I think the Preston Manager (possibly David Moyes)?
Singing to the Man Utd fans in 2016 after they sang "champions of Europe, you'll never sing that". We sang "champions of League Two, you'll never sing that".

Barry Richardson turning away and walking to his goal to collect his bag/towel after thinking he has heard the half time whistle. The whistle actually came from the crowd.
Another one involving Barry Richardson was Terry Angus scoring and running the length of the pitch to celebrate with BR after he had commented that he doesn’t get involved in goal celebrations.
Most of mine have come from the County Ground days.

Last game of our promotion season from div2 to div1 in April 1965 against Portsmouth. We was already promoted Portsmouth needed a draw to avoid relegation. Match was put back to a 7.30 saturday evening kick off, which would not now be allowed.
This was Jimmie Dickenson's 764th and last game for Portsmouth. Obviously we had arranged for a goal less draw so that Portsmouth got their point, however midway through the 2nd half a Portsmouth defender put through his own goal to give us the lead. Within minutes their right back came down the wing and cut inside past several of our players who offered no challenge and shot from the edge of the box and our keeper dived over it.
I watched this game from part way up the floodlight pylon with several others as we could not find any space.

I don't understand why we would arrange a draw to save them from relegation, pretty sure they wouldn't for us!

In a pub in Hammersmith before a Cobblers game at Fulham,  I saw a very familiar face, thinking he was a cobblers fan, I as passing him on way to the bar asked after his well being and enquired was he going to the game...then it dawned on me, he was the main character of the film I watched the night before! A few more...

Jeema Day

The great man himself sitting in front of me at Oxford, welcoming a young lad into the seat next to him and then asking him what he thought of "that f***ing bald c*nt of a left back they've got"

Bayo's hat-trick at Accrington

Rico's 4 goal haul at Macc

Demontagnac taking a shot in the warm up at Bristol Rovers, missing the goal entirely but shattering the seat in front of me!

Mad Michelle shattering a seat at Lincoln when we conceded a goal.

Standing in Kenilworth Road after a game, me and my dad on one side of a row of police officers, my Luton supporting mate and his nephews on the other side. They were giving us a lift home so we couldn't go anywhere but with them, so we ended up killing time by having a chat about the game over a copper's shoulder because he wouldn't let us meet up properly "in case we started fighting".

Some pissed up Donny fan shagging his equally pissed up girlfriend outside their ground.

A scumbag Hull fan running up and belting a Cobblers fan from behind while he walked along with his little girl, only to be set upon by a bunch of other outraged Hull fans.

Getting promoted at Torquay with the whole town full of Cobblers. Torquay opened the gates at the end and let in loads of Cobblers fans who'd travelled without a ticket so they could join the celebrations.

At the same game, we bumped into my dad's mate, a fellow Cobbler who was wearing a Torquay shirt. He'd just bought it in the shop and was wearing it to avoid any grief getting into the home end!

Chesterfield away in 1985 I think? The Chesterfield supporters had caused bedlam at the county ground and the return fixture was quite spicey. One of Derbyshire’s finest let a police dog into the away end who promptly proceeded to bite anyone in the vicinity irrespective of whether they were involved in any tomfoolery or not. The locals claimed it was the most intimidating fixture they had endured in years. Luckily I am a lover not a fighter so I was not involved in any of the shenanigans that took place that day whatsoever.

Just as there was a sudden hush in the ground, a very well spoken gentleman in the west stand announcing to the 20 or 30 people in his vocal range, "referee you are extremely poor".

An opposing player having a shot at goal (off target) in the first 30 seconds of a game and a not-so well spoken gentleman telling AB "f*cking rubbish Boothroyd, sort it out". Aidy stared at his watch then mouthed "you Wot"!

I was hit on the head by the ball at Stevenage during the warm up. It was a wild shot by Courtney Herbert but if only he'd put that much power into all his attempts on goal.

Another one I have is a memory from the Fenwick era. A Friday night game, either v Wigan or Stockport. We were at home, losing again, but the one player who was actually playing well was Paul Harsley. Cue astonishment and anger as Fenwick decided to take Harsley off. I'll never forget a reaction to a sub like it. Anyone else remember that?

I drove me and 4 mates from MK to Northampton to catch the supporters bus to Birmingham away. As I was paying for parking I noticed the coach pulling away (with my mates on it), jumped back in the car and tried to follow said coach to the game but lost it and ended up driving round Birmingham completely lost, spotted some floodlights and luckily for me it was the right ground.

Managed to get on the bus to Lincoln away but there were too many people on it and we had to go via Kettering on the way where they shipped us off onto a little shuttle bus for the rest of the trip. Also remember some Cobblers pissing through the fence into the Lincoln end at that game.

Doing work experience at the County Ground and fixing Terry Angus' boot rack.

Hull keeper Roy Carroll angrily taking his gloves off and stomping off the pitch after conceding and own goal

Being disappointed seeing Steve Ogrizovic enjoying a cigarette in the players entrance after the Cov FA Cup game as there'd been a "Footballers don't smoke" campaign at my school the week before.

Lincoln fan giving it the big ones as the buses were leaving Sincil Bank and walked straight into a tree.

A Swansea fan ripping off a piece of wall and throwing it at a coach behind us.

Double decker Jimmy's bus breaking down in the middle lane at a set of traffic lights in Islington on the way home from Millwall and the police asking us all to push it to the side of the road.

Snow storm at Carlisle and an eight hour journey home

Mark Ovendale being subbed due to an asthma attack

Armand One shirts being on sale weeks after he left the club

Vinny Jones running up the County Ground tunnel at full pelt to avoid signing autographs for the hoards of kids stood waiting for him

Being drunk at 11.30am in the morning is the only way to be in Southend!

Was that the game when Warren Donald scored with one of the hardest shots I've ever seen or was it in the 4-4 draw?

A grim day at the County Ground some time in the early 1990s during the McRitchie era when we were playing the kids, failing to beat Hereford despite them being reduced to SEVEN men. I think the final score was 1-1.

Game v Aldershot at the County Ground, the teams are lead out by their Chairmen to the strains of 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life' and the Hotel End singing "We've got less cash than you"! Although it turned out Aldershot had less cash than us.

Dancing on a table in the Forresters Arms, after Southend away, big Shamus got up to join me, and the table collapsed.

Me and my mate photo bom-bing a wedding reception outside Dewsbury railway station. Two blokes in claret shirts standing either side of the happy couple! Huddersfield away i think.

After a game, getting Jeema pissed up in the King Billy. He found his way home via Far Cotton. (he lives in Kingsthorpe)

Some Lincoln idiot goading the away coaches, arms outstretched. running straight into a lampost.

I have got loads more...  ;D

W
I remember it. I thought it was Russell Slade who was the manager though. Filling in for Wilkinson because his wife was ill.

I’m probably wrong though, my memory’s becoming increasingly sketchy.

A few more: Getting kicked out of Elland Road twice, they never confiscated my ticket, so I just went back in again a few minutes later.
Apparently I had drunk too much..

In a Firkin pub in Fulham, on the balcony, singing our heads off, and the bar staff cranked up the music to drown us out, so we ripped the wires out of the speakers.. After the game all away fans were escorted to the nearby Putney Bridge tube station, we got off at the next stop Parsons Green, and walked back to the Eight Bells pub. The local plod were congratulating themselves on a job well done, until they found us outside the pub singing our heads off, recalled the reinforcements, and had to resaddle the horses. This took a while and we continued enjoying ourselves.
Helicopter overhead, riot police lined up, one copper approached us and said "time to leave lads". Certainly Sir, was the response, beers necked and off we went. They only had to ask..

Being discreet in a rough pub on The Old Kent Road, prior to Millwall away, and in walks our police liason officer Dave (Adams?) who walked straight over to me and shook my hand. Hello mate, good journey down he enquired. The entire pub is now staring at me, time to leave.

England away, Zurich March 2003, for the Lichtenstein game. Taking cover in a shop doorway, avoiding the tear gas, and rubber bullets bouncing around, and finding myself among two fellow Cobblers. Step forward "long pete" I cant remember the other guys name.

Happy days, and all alcohol related.

Jan 31st 1987, London Rd, Pooterborough. Observations on the opposition’s then Manager Noel Cantwell by the away supporters (i.e us) following his less than flattering article regarding the Cobblers in the press. The most amazing atmosphere I ever experienced in one of our games.

I can remember the christmas song with a few changed words being sung.

Good Morning!

A vivid memory for me, last day of the season, my team Newport needed an unlikely victory at Walsall to secure promotion or, needed Cobblers to beat Portsmouth!

. So one last chance on the Saturday, away at Walsall. I couldn’t go to this one as I was now working on Saturday mornings but next best thing was to head to the County Ground, If Cobblers could beat Newport’s promotion rivals Portsmouth then we were up! I paid to go in the away end and it was bedlam! Thousands of Pompey fans and I couldn’t see a thing, a famous photograph of fans climbing the floodlight pylons sticks in my memory. So I had no choice, I exited the Spion Kop and paid again, this time to get in the Hotel End. No mobile phones for updates however someone had a transistor radio, and news came through that Newport were winning at Walsall! To upset the Pompey fans the Cobblers fans, to my amazement all started chanting “Newport! Newport!” I joined in of course and probably was the loudest !
Portsmouth did winnand got promoted however Newport also got promotion winning at Walsall. A real roller coaster of emotions that day!

Another memory , whilst I  used to watch the Cobblers fairly regularly in the eighties, was the shock at the crowd announcement, on a cold midweek match, of 998 (or similar) the first sub 1000 attendance at the County Ground. I also recall my displeasure at being served Happy Shopper cola out of a bottle despite the Coca-cola logo on the menu board!

Phil in Northampton

Was in the Spion Kop too for that one as a kid...Hotel End full - or appeared to be!
Remember Pompey fans in the paddock with transistors relaying the Newport score.

10,774 there with around 6000 or more Pompey. Yes, bedlam!

Notts County away in the late 80s, hammering down with rain, decided to sit in the seats instead of standing on the open terrace, asked the bloke on the gate if it was away fans, turned out it was the side terrace for home fans, police wanted us to move, but we refused as didn't want to get wet, in the end they stopped anymore home fans coming in. Also a load of Liverpool fans there that day as their away game was off, they had their own bit of terrace in the rain.

That was the game I was on about on page 1 of the thread, Jan 31st 1987. I’d forgotten the song lyrics, your right, that’s exactly what was sung, you must be the memory man? I also remember some rather derogatory comments heaped on “skill spot” Wakeley Gage who was playing for the poo in that game. Again I can’t remember exactly what was sung. Stepping over a small snowdrift to get to the NE toilets at Sixfields when we played Oxford in 2013. Despite it being late March  and having supported Cobblers for donkeys, I couldn't ever remember a game when it snowed from start to finish.

Breaking my own seat at in a fit of temper in the early years at Sixfields. Can't remember why, we probably shipped a last minute goal or something.

My mate, one freezing cold day at the CG, 'treating' himself to a hot soup only to find a lump of ice in it.

Breaking my seat in a fit of temper when we shipped a time added on goal at Nene Park. After the game I was in a local pub talking to a Diamonds supporting mate of mine who had sat fairly close to the away end. He said he'd never seen such an angry aggressive away crowd and cited one particular fellow in a black cap jumping up and down on his seat going mad. Yeah, that was me I said! Lol

Someone from the North stand shouting to Stan Collymore (after he had been in the papers for allegedly hitting his wife) WHO YOU GONNA HIT NEXT COLLEYMORE only for him to turn to the stand and mouth -your missus!

Breaking my seat at Bradford...… (I'm not coming out of this very well am I....it's misplaced passion, honest guv!)

A  Bournemouth player belting the ball into the upper west, only for a Cobblers fan to return it quickly and with a perfect aim to our player waiting to take the throw in which he did quickly and we scored to win 2-1. Atkins even thanked the mystery fan.

Spending the weekend in Blackpool for a Northern Soul Weekender to coincide with  the end of last season's away fixture at Oldham. In a pub and a DJ with a northern accent played a particularly great set. I went up to him after to congratulate him afterwards and in our ensuing conversation I mentioned I was from Northamptonshire and at that he shows me his fist on which he has NTFC tattooed on his fingers!!

Me, lanky Phil, and Lee, hailing a black cab at Trafalgar Square, the first one stuck his finger up and told us to faack off, the second one stopped and after being told our destination was Millwall declared, thats saaf of the river. He then got on his radio and asked directions. I thought that these drivers where supposed to do the knowledge.
Bath city away in the cup, early nineties I think. Open terrace, and its pissing down with rain. The home fans were goading us about getting wet, until Steve Terry did a "whooosh" belted the ball into the roof, and shattered the gutter. They got very wet. We didnt laugh too much..
Falling head first over the barrier, when Lee Lee Lee Harper saved the penalty against the Mancs, I never did find my wristwatch amongst the mayhem.
Sitting two on a seat during that Man City game, how many were in there?
Leaving my keys in the Red Rover after a game, getting home and kicking in the cellar window to gain access, I forgot about the six feet drop the other side. A night in A+E wasnt much fun.

Rochdale away 1981. Dicky Hutt on the pitch during the warm up in his black leather jacket. Missing the ball, falling over and hitting his head on the hoardings. I doubt anyone else can say "I was there", or at least remember it.

Blackpool home 1982, cup game. Having a petrol bomb thrown at me by some Blackpool fans out of the back of a furniture van in Abington Ave. Numerous hooligan encounters from that era but that one sticks out.

I was near the incident stood on the cricket side Spion Kop half of the pitch (as opposed to Hotel End). What was that all about ? I seem to recall Stuart Beavon also getting involved. FA cup replays 1984.
Round one. Living in Rugby, standing with my VS supporting mates on an open terrace getting soaked at Butlin rd, watching us sneak a win.

I remember a game(but not the year)at the County Ground against Millwall. I thought the floodlights had gone out when the worlds largest policeman stood in front of me with a Millwall fan in one hand and a Cobblers fan in the other, I swear he had both of them by their collars with their feet off the ground!

When very young can remember watching Freddie Ramscar play and also Reg Elvey. Memorable moments was the game at Millwall in 1961 I think - where there was a 'boxing match' between Gale(centre half) and Howarth of Millwall; both sent off, Gale with blood pouring from his head and Howarth with huge black eye. An even more memorable game was at Crystal Palace where we paraded new signing Cliff Holton; he scored 3! In  my view the best striker we have had so far. Was at Brighton where we won 0-5 in 1964, Kurila and Branston were outstanding as was Frank Large who scored 3. In more recent times Ricky Holmes games at Stevenage, Luton and the draw against Mansfield, big mistake for him to leave us! I failed to get back to the coach in time whilst in Bury Market and was abandoned so had to make the 17 miles on my own initiative. Arrived just in time to witness Bayo's goals which included a thumping header. No longer a great drinker but the antics of a boozer inside Coventry Stadium at one of the internal stair entrance was entertaining. CW man management style in front of support at Accrington and Notts County were impressive.

Cambridge away 86-87 was the greatest all time away performance and it’s beyond dispute, so what do you think about that then? Eddie McGoldrick was immense, I remember the lyrics from the song that day, basically because there was only one word with 2 syllables in it, “Edd-ie”. It was sung for virtually the whole of the second half. 2-0 down at half time and we were rubbish. Came out second half and inspired by Eddie we played them off the park. The determination and ability displayed was honestly unbelievable, it was like watching Barcelona against Brixworth and we won 3-2. Current squad take note!

Good, he replies. Because Ive just nicked this extra large TV from Sainsburys. Do you wanna buy it?
Big Norm the doorman steps in, and says, I will give you fifty quid for it. Take it, or I will phone the police. Norm went home with a Telly in the boot of his car. How that skinny little scrote, managed to get that box out of Sainsburys is beyond me.

Teasing Mark Bosnich from the North Stand about putting "prawns on a barby" and when we asked him why he had joined Chelsea, he craftily made the money symbol with his hand behind his back.

If I remember rightly, Gabbiadini scored first and then we got thumped but they had a lot of talent on show. 8-1 I think it finished.

Does this count?
Normally at the County Ground the Cobblers only played till the end of April, because the Cricket Club then took over, but in 1989 because of a fixture backlog they played Bolton on 13th May, my Wedding Day!!
I had bought a Cobblers tie to wear for the occasion but it was discovered by my better half two days before the big day. She tied the offending item into a million knots and threw it into the bin saying she would get me something better! Later I retrieved the tie, undid all the knots, ironed out all the creases and walked up the aisle in that claret beauty! You have to start as you mean to go on.

Yep, she’s making you wear clothes out of a bin, shes wearing stuff from Armani/Versace/Prada or summat? I’ve married one of them as well.

1991/92 season: standing outside the County Ground away changing room, listening through a broken window pane as an apopletic Billy Bremner gave his Donny Rovers team the hairdryer treatment after we had well and truly done them over (3-1 think). 2 months later he'd resigned.
