Title: Promotion - when do you know it is possible?
Post by: spqr on January 02, 2020, 10:16:01 am
Each time I log on I read more or less the same thing about the team and it got me thinking,

My questions are '"In the last 50 years how many teams were you confident would get promoted?  At what point in the season did you believe that promotion was on?"

As I think back, there are probably 4 teams that I thought would be promoted without play offs.

1 - The team under Dave Bowen in 1970/71.  Had Frank Ramkmore not been injured, who knows?  Felt it would happen very early on and it didn't due to the injury.
2 - Bill Dodgin's team in 1975/76. A team full of characters that played entertaining football.  Early in the season you could see something good.
3 - Graham Carr's promotion team with Hill, Morley, McGoldrick and co.  Benjamin giving the ball to Hill and you knew there was a goal.  Early on in the season the quality was there.
4 - Chris Wilder's team.   It seemed to build up and was on after Christmas I felt.

Other than that nothing really stands out.  Have i missed anything?  Other thoughts would be of interest.

When Calderwood signed Ian Taylor I knew we would get promoted right then. It turned out to be more difficult than I imagined.

With regard to the Graham Carr promotion winning team I was convinced the Cobblers were certain to win promotion by the end of the previous season. There was so much talent in that side - it looked unstoppable.

Could you go back 60 years please?

Became very obvious when we won something like 17 in 18 over November/December & January with Wilder but I knew for definite with the 4-0 at Orient

I was very confident after we beat Notts County in November, and knew for certain when we won at Plymouth.

Under Colin, it was when we won at Boston. When Gavin Johnson was bagging, you knew it was our year.

It looked nailed on for a while that season, it just went a bit awry against Preston in an early April 87 night match. 1-0 loss up at Deepdale in front of about 17000, they looked imperious and the Cobblers looked a bit like scared rabbits in headlights. It was all ok in the end though.

For the Wilder season the minute Baldy got his new deluxe ironing board at Xmas I knew we'd go up as Champs.

Does anybody seriously think we will be promoted?

I went on the coaches that night, old wooden stands and Frank Worthington doing keepy ups in front of us.

Hi, I do. Probably nicking 3rd if it happens. Wouldn't especially fear the play-offs either if Swindon, Bradford and Plymouth were automatically promoted. Hope this helps. Teyn.
