Title: Gone for a Burton FA Cup 5/1/20
Post by: Dr Feelgood on January 03, 2020, 21:31:23 pm
Big Game and on Telly over here..
Prediction 3-1 loss.
Willo for us.
Looking forward to this but I suspect they'll be just too strong.

We have been given the kiss of death. Mark Lawrenson making his FA cup predictions says that he cannot see any major upsets in this round but thinks there could be a minor upset at Burton and takes Northampton to win 1-0.
It's a pity we were not playing them a month ago as they appear to have found some form winning 3 of the last for games. Burton are another side with a better away record than at home, in 13 away games they have scored 21 goals compared to 11 from 10 home games although 7 of these were from the last 2 games but they have failed to score in 5 of the 10 games. Winning 3 of their last 4 games they have scored 11 goals but have also conceded 8 so they appear to have defensive problems. Danger men appear to be N.I. international Liam Boyce and Lucas Akins who have regularly featured on the score sheet.
If we can keep it it tight at the back I think we will have opportunities at the other end and spurred on by a large away following I give us every chance of springing a surprise.

Time to concentrate on the League.

This will be a hiding to nothing, with no glory days.  The winner will be away to Oxford Utd.

Best to just bow out of the Cup, gracefully, now.  Most of the teams around us have already played in the league today.  From the results, it is clear where their priorities have been.

With major injuries to McWilliams & Smith, and concern over McCormack (scan related to contract extension?), we suddenly do not have the strength in depth for a congested fixture list.

Burton = A back-foot game, with Hoskins as the lone striker.

First time to burton for me,
Remember someone mentioning a few good pubs in Burton, recommendations?

Will be arriving via train just after 12!

Title: Re: Gone for a Burton FA Cup 5/1/20
Post by: Coolcat on January 04, 2020, 19:27:36 pm
If arriving at 12pm, most of the decent pubs will be open.
Of those, out of the station, over bridge and right at Roebuck pub, You'll come to the Devonshire Arms. That's around 3-5mins walk. Next side street (Cross St) is Coopers Tavern - brilliantly iconic real ale pub but small, so if you don't like real ale, give it a swerve - and leave for those who do!  ;)
If arriving before 12pm, the National Brewery Tap opens at 11am as does the Oak & Ivy which is around a 3 min walk turning left out of the station.

Alfred and Derby Arms on Derby Road when walking to the ground.

Wasn’t it at Burton where Cris Dunn had a howler? I remember loads of our support walking out early.

The prize money alone for winning a 3rd round tie is £135,000. This would easily pay for loans to replace McWilliams, Smith and McCormack for the rest of the season.

Then there's the gate money from Round 4, the prize money from Round 4, television money potentially.

He had two against Burton. One where he managed to dive over the ball really early on, and then later on got caught in possession to concede another one. When we played them at home he caught the ball for a cross but somehow stepped backed over the line for a goal, leading to Sammo being sacked. Not a great goalkeeping record against Burton.

Think Dunn conceded 3 in the first ten minutes there once. Might not have been 3, might not have been in ten minutes but it certainly wasn't a good start

Can anyone shed light on ticket info for today's game?
Our own official site says tickets can be bought at the ground for both sitting and standing, yet Burtons official site says tickets on the day for home fans only.

Played well, some good football, dangerous from set pieces of course.
Shame about the dodgy defending at the end....
See out the first 10 minutes of the second half....

Good cross by Hoskins for the second, good work down in the corner later on, but a dodgy back pass and a dodgy back header just to even it out!!

Great result, super day all round, atmosphere superb, everybody played well. Their No 5 must have been well pleased when Oliver went off , didn’t get anywhere near him all game. Curle got everything spot on today, the subs, tactics and we were top class, I’m buzzing. Please a Sunday draw for me , as at a works conference all day on the Friday and Saturday in Liverpool, if not can see a argument arising with my boss, not very often we get to the 4th round.

My first game back after a little mishap last summer, and what a result!
Can't help draw parallels with Rotherham away the last time we got this far when we drew Man Utd, one of my all time highlights from following the Cobblers, the atmosphere under the tin roof for the replay that night was phenomenal. Not quite up there on that level atmosphere or quality of football wise today but still very good with some decent football played..
Thought the back three all played really well but my Motm goes to Nicky Adams.
Burton have got a fantastic set up as we know and played some good football, at times looking dangerous, had that chance gone in that hit the bar things might have ended differently, but be honest, compared to us they will always be a non league outfit.

We took a gamble on Warburton but unfortunately he’s not up to much, not quick or strong enough for league football I’m afraid.
Still we’ve a quarter of a mill to spunk on a replacement.

You sound a bag of laughs ... since when has it been about winning the cup - it’s about the glory of playing against a top team and maybe getting a result !!
Well done lads today - shows you what we are capable of , often against better teams .

Was it you?

£135,000 prize money for winning today.......That's a quarter of a million so far with the TV revenues.

Only £180,000 for winning in the fourth round...... ;D

I don't know why people keep talking about cup run financial gains benefiting us in any way at all. Bowers and his mate are owed 5 million smackers so anything that comes in is highly unlikely to be ring-fenced for players. It will be swallowed by the black hole.

When you put this performance and cup run together with the league position i reckon it puts to bed any debate about us not progressing? When we play like that there’s not a team in division 2 that can live with us. Bit of jiggery pokery in the transfer window that pays off and we can really push on.

Since Sc***horpe away we have taken 24 points from 12 league matches, so 2 points per game on average.

If we can follow up today's result with 2 wins in the next 3 matches, things will start to get really interesting.

That 'black hole' saved the club from extinction.

The alarm went off at 05:30 yesterday morning, I joined Horsham Mark on the 06:39 from Horsham to London Bridge. All going well: breakfast at Euston and on-time departure for Birmingham New Street but we then found ourselves sitting on the train at Rugby for nearly an hour due to an incident near Birmingham Airport. We jumped off and re-routed ourselves via Tamworth and made Burton by 12:20. Time for a couple of pints in town before heading up to the Pirelli.

Time for a couple of post-match pints in Burton before heading south. Got home just after 22:30.

Worth every pound and every minute  :)

Anyone else notice how small their defence were? Played into our hands as we won everything in the air. It seemed to me that JJOT was wasted in defence, didnt even go up for corners. Not complaining. Great day out.

It’s days like yesterday that make it all worth it. Fantastic performance from the lads and credit to KC who I thought got his tactics and substitutions spot on. Everyone was outstanding but I have to single out Charlie Goode who I thought put in a performance to remember in years to come. Absolute man mountain.

Hopefully we’ll take lots of confidence from yesterday as we go into a crucial period of the season. The lads have shown on a few occasions now that they can mix it with good sides. Before yesterday we hadn’t played very well for a few games but I’m hoping yesterday can now be a catalyst for a serious promotion push.

Onto Salford where we should have another great away following!

I said that if we could keep it tight at the back and restrict Boyce and Akins we would have chances at the other end because they had a suspect defence but I was not expecting them to be that poor.
Everybody put in a shift. Cornell dealt with everything admirably and the defence kept the number of saves he had to make to a minimum.
The back 3 were as reliable as ever and I notice on the Burton forum they are singing Goode's praises for the way he nullified Boyce's threat. The closing down tireless work in front of the defence often meant Burton were unable to find a way through.
Hoskins must be mentioned for his superb cross for the 2nd goal and his calm placement when scoring the 4th, also for the amount of back tracking.
Oliver gave their defence a torrid time winning almost everything in the air.
How tinpot was playing the celebration music for scoring at the end when you have entered added time 3 goals down, although it was funny seeing our supporters jumping up and down to it.
Altogether a thoroughly enjoyable day now lets hope the players get a good 4th round draw which thet deserve.

I've always liked Burton, despite our usually poor results there, they are a very well run club. Not so happy that the bar under the away end was 60p a pint dearer than the other bars in the ground  :(

The Beech was charging £3.80-£4.00 a pint too which I thought was a bit steep. Sure they made a killing though.....especially from the one Cobblers fan who seemed to be buying Jagerbombs for everyone!

KC said that plan A was for an aerial assault and plan B was for more of the same. Imagine the flak he would have got on here, from the usual suspects if we had lost. They have regularly told us that if we got promoted we would come straight back down with this style of play but we have been to a mid table division 1 side and put 4 past them on their own patch. It may not be pretty but it is proving very effective.

Wait till the end of the season till you knock another one off with your excitement, we are currently 9th in league two, hardly pulling up trees, we need some more quality up front and midfield, hopefully with the windfall of £500k from the FA cup and still counting KT might give KC a few bob to spend, MAYBE!

I am proud to eat my hat!

The prize money alone for winning a 3rd round tie is £135,000. This would easily pay for loans to replace McWilliams, Smith and McCormack for the rest of the season.

Then there's the gate money from Round 4, the prize money from Round 4, television money potentially.

You called it right & I got it wrong.

Good man.  I hope you had a great day out!

I enjoyed my Bet365 (microscopic) view of the game.  Really good to have the visuals without commentary. But, they did broadcast the ground mike, so, plenty of noise from the travelling Cobblers!

What's your prediction for the game v Derby?

I don't believe it frankly, but if indeed you are Evers, I think someone (KT) should get you a special award for supporting the club all these years. Is there anything in the club shop you fancy?
