Title: Fleetwood (H) Tuesday 1st December
Post by: GrangeParkCobbler on November 29, 2020, 17:16:10 pm
Fleetwood visit the PTS on Tuesday night, hopefully the last game behind closed doors for the foreseeable future!

Joey Bartons men sit in 7th place in the table, with seven wins from their 14 games so far. They are on a four game unbeaten run during which time they've scored 12 goals. Two of those 4 games were against Sunderland, a 2-1 win in the Papa Johns Trophy and a 1-1 draw in their last league game. Prior to that they beat Plymouth 5-1 and won 4-1 at Bristol Rovers, a result which signalled the end of Ben Garners reign.

Away from home they've won two and lost 4 of their 6 games, the victories coming at Gillingham and Bristol Rovers.

Callum Camps is having a great goalscoring season from midfield, with 10 goals to his name already, Ched Evans has notched seven goals too but only appeared as a sub in the last game. They also have Josh Morris and Paddy Madden in their ranks so are not short of options up front.

For the Cobblers Ryan Watson and Cian Bolger are both a yellow away from a ban, with Sam Hoskins, Jack Sowerby and Chris Missilou two yellows away.

Head to head only 9 games between the two sides, The Cod have the upper hand with five victories including four in the last five games, the other game a draw. Our last victory over them was in 2013 when a solitary Luke Norris goal a minute from time was enough to win the points. The Town have failed to score in their last three meetings with Fleetwood.

James Adcock will referee the game, he is a former Championship ref who has slipped back down the ladder somewhat. He's reffed ten games this season dishing out 19 yellow and two red cards, his last game was Cheltenhams 2-1 FA Cup win over Crewe on Saturday. The last time he was in charge of a Cobblers game was on Boxing Day 2013, the 0-1 defeat at Burton, his only other Cobblers game as far as I can see was our 3-0 win at AFC Wimbledon in 2011, a game where he sent off Nick McCoy.

Kick-off is at 7.45pm.

Most of the time, when we're playing teams doing well in the league we tend to get almost none of the ball and surrender two soft goals, so I'm going for a 2-0 to Fleetwood but I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

We could get battered by the cod and do all our chips .
There will be nought Pukka about tomorrow night as we attempt to ketchup to mid table

Time to start picking up points from the teams above us. Although Fleetwood are higher in the table I regard Doncaster to be the tougher fixture as they are only 2 points behind with 2 games in hand.
17 of Fleetwood's 23 points have been gained at home. Their 2 away wins were at Gillingham and Bristol Rovers and their 4 defeats at Peterborough, Charlton, Accrington and Rochdale so I believe we get something from this game but we must watch Callum Camps who has hit a hot scoring streak since his move from Rochdale.

This all sound very fishy, we canít have our cake and eat it although the pitch looks a bit mushy, Curle will doubtless pea me off with his codswallop of a team selection, it will all be bits and pieces again.🤭

Trawling through the fixtures this one did catch the eye. But it's at our plaice and if everyone chips in maybe we can bag three penneth. (showing my age there!)

The sole aim is not to flounder. We need to net a couple before Barton gets on his perch and starts carping on about missed chances. A lot of people are saying it will be a mackerel if we win but I might have a couple of squid on it.

If only we had Zander at the back it would be a guaranteed 3 points. Joey would be pouting on the touchline, I'd be doing a celebratory conger around the PTS ... and happy dace for Mr Whiting.

KC has commented that he has had to change the style of play at Sixfields (unsuccessfully!) because of the state of the pitch.

SIMPLE; Train at the excellent facilities at Moulton College and save the Sixfields pitch for matches only and then get more points like the away games.

Change of referee for tonights game, we now have Trevor Kettle who reffed our 4-0 defeat at Portsmouth. In 11 games this season he has issued 30 yellows and 2 reds.
Could be a good omen as in the 11 games the home team has won 9 (including all of the last 8) with 1 draw and 1 away win.

Fleetwood will not miss away fans at grounds as hardly any of their fans bother to go. Their last 2 visits here they have brought 103 & 109 which were for saturday games so it would be even less for a night game.
Personally I dislike these teams that are bankrolled to league status and have poor support, I would rather see a team like Notts County instead who were still managing home support of 5000 in the national league.
That is not to say that any poorly supported teams should not have league status as there are several who have decades of league status  and suffer because of their location with several bigger clubs within close travelling distance.

Going for a 0-2 loss.
I think the next few weeks will be very tough.
Curle will probably be gone by Jan.
Fleetwood h
Donny h
Crewe a
Oxford a
Lincoln h
Ippy a
Gilly h
Sunderland h
The only points i can see us getting is probably Oxford and Gillingham.
Its going to be a long Dec

Can understand Holmes being on the bench - would never last the full ninety minutes...so impact sub may well be far more effective.

However, why Mitchell dropped??? And Benny Seal!

I thought the Arnold swap would be coming after the commentary where Mitchell got absolutely bollocked in public for the goal two matches ago, and the goalkeeping coach got an earful for the free-kick we conceded last match, Curle definitely lay the blame for the goals down at Mitchells feet.

I'm assuming the Holmes thing is down to managing his fitness and injury. BAS is given a chance to impress today, as I would have definiltely had Chuks ahead of him in the pecking order if he was fit.

From our official site.....

Us 2 shots, them 8
Us 1 on target, them 2
Us 34%, them 66% possession
Us 0 corners, them 4
Us 128 passes, them 251
Us 56% pass accuracy, them 70%
Us 6 crosses, them 12

Yep, matching them stride for stride indeed!!

Still 0-0 though I guess!

Unfortunately we are looking like a Division 2 side against a Div 1 side and havenít had a decent attempt on target. Not creative enough, not positive enough and unable to impose ourselves on the game. We need to up our work rate and start pressing and pressuring Fleetwood, get in their faces and stop allowing ourselves to be bullied. We are looking ever so slightly like a team who want the game to be over so we can get in the showers? Too many passengers in this one, Hoskins and Seal have been particularly poor, Keef needs to earn his coin at halftime because at the minute there is only one winner.

Swap Adamís for either Marshall or Holmes.

Iím glad others are starting to see this also!

The guy can barely take 3 steps without falling, he canít head and often gets tangled in his own feet. I would love to say his finishing and pace are top notch but until he learns to stand up for more than a couple of steps we will never know.

They had some very very good experienced players including the ex Scotland captain, whelan , camps ,evans to name a few.
We have managed to dig out a result through sticking together and putting in a proper shift.

Finally a result that brings some pride back.

The togetherness and team spirit we showed tonight is what can keep us in this division so it was brilliant to see.
For all the possession Fleetwood had they never had a clear cut chance. Our defending was fantastic now if we could just improve our counter attacking we'd worry a few teams.

Once again 71% possession means nothing as they go home empty handed, same number of shots on target and corners as the team with 29% possession and Arnold rarely troubled. The back 3, which has come in for much criticism, defended resolutely with so many balls coming into the box. Not a classic but a workman like performance.
Apart from the goal we created very little and we need to use the ball better, also stop so many balls into the box as another game we will not get away so lightly. Should give the team added confidence going into another tough game against Doncaster.

The opposition makes the win all the sweeter.

Yes it did - Fleetwood on this showing are greatly overrated!  For all their possession Fleetwood had few shots 'actually' on goal and can only recall one significant save by Arnold who had very steady game! For all the criticism suffered by KC for his Team selection tonight he actually got it right. I suspect KC was more pleased by the clean sheet than maybe the actual win. Smith did ok and Adam's ability to put in a 2/3 quality crosses won the game. All in all a great defensive display which in the end thoroughly merited the win. Delighted that the doom-mongers now have to eat their words.  The ironic thing is that Marshall's shot on goal was the nearest either side got to scoring 2nd half. A tad more pace on the strike; it would have been in! 14th for now - playoffs anyone!

Cracking win with plenty of resilience and fight. A very Keith Curle win. Not an easy watch but it extends the league run to just one defeat in six. Defence were magnificent but we defended as a team. Hoskins put in another great shift. Just need to see more quality going forward. We know Holmes can do that. With Chuk or Rose up top we'd be getter off. Seal isn't looking the part.
Roll on Satdee with a home crowd.

Had a bit of time for reflection and whilst itís hard to be critical when you win I wasnít entirely happy with that performance. Playing the percentages game we would lose 3 out of 4 games putting in a performance like that? If ever there was a team moulded in the shape of a manager Fleetwood are it, cnnts who are not as good as they think they are? My view is we should have played a higher line pressed them all over the pitch and got right in their faces and watch them unhinge? We gave them entirely too much respect and got away with it? I like Timbo, but I donít know what he was on talking about claiming that was one of our best performances under Curle? Even Keef was a bit incredulous about that statement. Given our recruitment strategy I expect us to be a bit light on ability and thatís fair enough? However we need to compensate for that by having a bit of backbone and determination, and not allow us to get pushed around by the likes of Fleetwood. As I said, I feel a bit of an ar5e for being critical off the back of a win, and 7 points out of 9 is an outstanding effort. I just didnít like what I saw, especially first half and think Lady Luck smiled on us a bit this time? Generally speaking put in a performance like that and she wonít?

Tactically; KC 1 Barton 0 especially at half time by moving Smith and Seal wider onto their full backs as it stopped most of their crosses. Plus moving Hoskins more central stopped Whelans influence.

Has Barton and Fleetwood stopped squealing yet? I think my ears are bleeding!

Fair enough we got a hard fought result .
It looks to me though that we have now stopped pressing high up the pitch or even half way down it and are now content to defend the penalty area.
Are we really good enough to do that and play on the counter ?
It relies on us making no mistakes at all and for me itís a recipe for disaster.

Title: Re: Fleetwood (H) Tuesday 1st December
Post by: BackOfTheNet on December 02, 2020, 08:31:17 am
It was an odd and somewhat contradictory game to watch last night. On the one hand, all of the defenders put in decent individual performances, working hard, putting their bodies on the line and winning block after block, tackle after tackle, header after header.

On the other hand, fairly early on last night I described the defence as shambolic and do you know what? I stand by that. They didn't work as a unit, they didn't dominate the attackers or marshall them out of the game, they just stood up to a beating. And that beating became ever more brutal and frantic as we sat back deeper and deeper in the second half.

So yes, they did well and it was a fantastic 3 points, but on another day the tactic of just desperately throwing yourself in the way of everything is going to backfire. There's a lot of work for KC still to do with that back line!

Title: Re: Fleetwood (H) Tuesday 1st December

It's not necessarily work to be done on the defence, as they appeared to have done a good/decent job under intense pressure last night. The work needs to be done on moving the line of that defence further up the field of play in order for the defence to not have to re-enact The Alamo every game on their 6 or 18 yard line.
Moving the opposition attack from the goalkeepers doorstep will reduce the amount of last ditch defending and the tendency to concede late.

Us? You don't understand more correctly. Is it not obvious reading the thread? MC's responses to Charlatan's ott, expletive, 'I told you so' rant, which had more than a similarity to a teenager's reaction, having experienced alcohol for the first time!

Questioned prior to the game why Mitchell was dropped...but Arnold put in a strong, commanding, assured performance to be fair!
Cornell (much to my glee  ;D) kept a clean sheet also, last night!

As for BAS Ashley-Seal. Coming from a Premier League environment at Wolves is quite evident, a successful future there awaits...falling to the ground three times in the first seventy seconds!!!

The side put out last night had a lot of flexibility, we looked better with 4 at the back but when Fleetwood put the pressure on we were able to create a back 5 with hoskins dropping back.

Horsfall and Bolger looked different players last night, Horsfall especially , Bolger seems to have been steadily improving.

Organise these words in to your preferred order.

When! I had to watch back the highlights to get the few seconds when they weren't!  ;D

I think having an experienced head in there like Sheehan will undoubtedly help pull up levels of performance and consistency. Either way any better games will aid confidence.
Marshall coming on made a difference too.
In Seal we may have discovered the next JJ Hooper. Hoping not though.

Joey Barton agrees: 'credit to Cian Bolger, I thought he was outstanding tonight.Ē  Agree that Sheehan has made a big difference: it's amazing the influence that a calm, experienced head can have on a defence.

Personally think that Chukwuemeka should be ahead of Seal in the pecking order at the moment based on overall contribution and goal threat. Chuks has a level of composure which reminds me of a young Ivan Toney.

Does that mean if we manage to get rid of him, we have to sign him again 2 years later to find out he is still as bad the second time  :o

I'm sure we'd see a better Seal if he put studs in his boots, failing that, the zoo

All very unfair, my cousin is in the medical profession and reckons Ashley-Seal displays the classic symptoms of an inner ear infection?

Bit hypocritical, if we are honest at his age most of us spent our time walking around scratching our nuts, bumping into things and tripping over?

You always have to baffle us all with your use of such technical terms! :)
