Title: Pizza Cup Last 16 Home v MK Dons Tuesday night 12/01/21
Post by: GrangeParkCobbler on January 09, 2021, 19:20:06 pm
Assuming the game goes ahead we will be in last 16 action of the Papa Johns Trophy, the competition that nobody won last season!!

We will entertain MK Dons, an all League 1 tie with both teams in the bottom third of the league table.

MK slid to a penalty shootout defeat to a strong Premier League Burnley on Saturday, after leading until the last minute of normal time. The Dons have only lost once in their last seven games (in normal time) and have reached this stage of this competition thanks to wins over us and Stevenage in the group stage, a defeat to Southampton U21's then a 6-0 win over Norwich U21's in the first knockout round.

Cameron Jerome scored the goal at Burnley and is sure to be one of the Don's dangermen, he had 9 goals to his name this season and is just 4 goals short of 150 career goals during his time at the likes of Birmingham, Stoke, Crystal Palace and Norwich. Scott Fraser has seven goals from midfield.

This will be the third meeting between the sides this season, Dons beat us 3-1 in the group stage of this competition, Joseph Mills scoring for the Cobblers, then there was a dour 0-0 League encounter at Sxifields in November.
There have been 16 previous encounters between the two teams, The Cobblers have only beaten the Dons three times, one of those victories in this competition back in 2012 when a solitary Jake Robinson goal was enough for us. All our wins have been at home, the Dons having two wins on our patch too to go with their seven wins over us at Stadium:MK

Referee for the game should be Craig Hicks, he refereed our 2-1 defeat at Plymouth earlier this season, and has dished out 50 yellow and two reds in his 18 games. His last visit to Sixfields was in November 2019 when he was the man in the middle for our 4-1 win over Crewe.

The game will be played to a finish on the night with no extra time, straight to penalties if level after 90 minutes. A place in the quarter finals along with £40,000 is the prize for winning this game.

These folk from bucks are charlatans and should be expunged from all competitions. They are a deceit that any honourable personage would s*** on. If they have the gall to turn up they should hide their heads in shame.

MK went to extra time and penalties yesterday and next saturday are away at Peterborough so I imagine they will make several changes.
We will not have played for 10 days so really do not need to rest anybody and I feel we should put out a strong team with £40,000 at stake.
However, I feel we will make a number of changes as KT seems to rest Sheehan and Adams for these games, possibly also Bolger and Hoskins. So a I would not be surprised to see the following line up
                                                       Arnold
                               Jones               Horsfall               Martin
        Harriman              Watson                  Missilou                         Marshall
                                                        Korboa
                                   Smith                                  Chukwuemeka

You say we should put out a strong team then suggest a back three with Martin & Horsfall in it!!!! isn’t that just accepting defeat.

Winslow, if you read my post correctly I say that because we will not have played for 10 days and with the prospect of banking £40,000 I would put out a strong team.
I then say that I expect certain players to be rested and the team I proposed may play. With 9 changes to the Sunderland game that would not constitute a strong team.

As expected KC says he will be making changes to give other players game time and another chance to impress.
Can we keep our unbeaten Tuesday night home record intact?, currently 6 games ( 4 league and 2  EFL Trophy). MK certainly were not particularly impressive earlier in the season in the league match.

Rested is surely the wrong word to use when you haven't had a game for 10 days....they've all been rested already!

EFL Trophy squad selection rules require at least 4 players who started the last league game, or who will start the following league game to start this fixture.

Its not like we have a massive squad to choose from anyway now.....I make it that we have 21 players available for the game

Other than Sheehan & McWilliams who are just too vital to risk in this competition, I wouldn’t really bother resting anyone else.

He always seems to rest Sheehan and Adams from these games and I think he will be trying to avoid Bolger and Hoskins picking up an injury.

So we're outside the bottom 4 in the league and have 25 games to go. If we lose the next league game bah so what, we've still got another 24. If however we lose the PJT trophy game we are out and miss out on £40k revenue......

What game is more important? That's a rhetorical question btw.......!

True....and I suppose we're owed one as we fell on the right side of it last season.....still trying to find out whether the 50% of games things is a thing.....ie can only use that and call it a season if half the games have been played...by everyone! Anything less than that and it would be null and void, and "as you were" for 2021-22....

They are both important; winning is important as is the prize of £40k and more money if get through Clearly L1 survival is essential but would play the strongest team as we still have the opportunity to sign replacement players. Based on this theory play Sheehan et al !  Winning is a desirable habit. Perhaps the Club will donate any winnings to help with Covid-19 testing?

Play the team that is most likely to win the game on the day. Winning is a habit. Don't over think it. A very good way of ensuring we keep lads KC wants to move on would be to play them and get them injured.

I'd imagine Horsfall, Marshall, Missilou, Korboa, Smith, maybe Caleb? will all be a position to move in. It's not so much that the first 11 will be tired after having a week and a bit off, but likely you'd want some of those to shake the rust off a bit in case they have to come in because of injuries to the first team over the next busy period.

Team:

Arnold; Harriman, Bolger, Horsfall; Hoskins, Watson, McWilliams, Sowerby, Mills; Ashley-Seal, Rose.

Subs: Mitchell, Smith, Adams, Korboa, Missilou, Chukwuemeka, Dyche.

So, welcome back into the team for Joseph Mills. However, no Joe Martin or Mark Marshall in the 18. Also, 'rested' is Jones & Sheehan.

A strong side.....good to see Mills back, but i'll change my tune if he breaks down after 30 minutes!

Looks like the end of the road for Martin and Marshall......can't see them coming back into the fold for the Oxford game if they don't make the bench for this.

MK also name a strong side with just three changes from their penalty shootout defeat to Burnley at the weekend.
Former Norwich and Bournemouth midfielder Andrew Surman comes back into the side after a two week injury layoff, top scorer Cameron Jerome is rested though as Joe Mason starts up front.

Martin I get, but i'm still a bit perplexed by the Marshall situation.....

This is what Curle said less than a year ago when he brought him to the club...

"Manager Keith Curle said he was pleased to bring in "a player with pace, trickery, a strong work ethic" despite "really strong competition" from other clubs."

Makes you wonder how it went so wrong?

I think the change to an extra defensive minded midfielder did it for both Holmes & Marshall especially with Hoskins now looking a better bet than Marshall at right wingback

Working for me.
Problem for Marshall in having another 12 months on his legs woth his relatively old age, and having to transfer that up a division as well. Also, like Holmes and Adams, his natural position isnt involved in our favoured formation.

Is it the midfield not pressing? Wingbacks not attacking? In ability to find simple 5 yards pass? I dunno, we've had a couple of good touches and won a few second balls, but definitely feel that if the opposition just puts our centre-backs under any amount of pressure we'll just turn the ball over by going long and to no-one in particular.

And this is after 10 days rest......!! MK played away against a PL side on Saturday, went to extra time and penalties and gave it their all.....yet they still have far too much for us tonight!

GPC, agree entirely. Embarrassing. There is absolutely nothing to be proud about in our style of play. As Pete Walton said early in the game, Curle sets us up to try and not lose the game rather than win it. That’s why any flair in the Team is extinguished and it’s so poor to watch. Add to that the overall poor quality of the Team it’s just not enjoyable to watch.

You have to say KC has got away with it with no fan's in the ground. I think there would have been a reaction from the fans where, on average, we have only put in anything like a performance around one game in four. I'm struggling to think of a game where Sheehan hasn't played and we've been anything but dreadful.

Even Tim didn't think we'd get a goal this evening. That's how poor we were. McWilliams continues to impress and at least Mills is back, but otherwise pretty dire. Our defensive game relies on pressing the opposition, but, despite having played a cup game + extra time 3 days ago, MK pressed far more effectively than we did. They also have the quality on the ball that we definitely don't have and won the game at a canter.

Korboa has been very disappointing in his last few appearances after a bright start to his Cobblers career. He gets pushed off the ball far too easily and doesn't get stuck in either. Maybe not keeping his place in the team despite a bright start has knocked his confidence, but I can't see KC liking what he saw tonight.

Zero goal threat yet again, but it won't matter who we sign and put up front unless they get some kind of service. Lumping it up from the back just doesn't work at this level with the players we have.

This. MK went to extra time and penalties at the weekend, so surely putting it on them from the offset would have paid dividends. But no, not super Keith. The only thing keeping him in the job is the knowledge that the season may get scrubbed. Absolutely shocking performance, again! Another two hours I'll never get back, and absolutely the last game I am paying to watch unless things change drastically.

We did not get rid of Morton and Wharton. We tried to buy them!
Where did you post thet we should have kept Goode instead of taking a million pouds?
Oliver was offered a new contract.
Only Turnbull was got rid of and that was because of the silly money JFH gave him.

just when you thought lockdown couldn’t become any more dull ; any more nauseating ; any more depressing .....
Curle turns up with his bunch of half wits and serves up yet another display that sucks the remaining glimmer of light and last fragment of positivity deep from within your soul .
If crowds were in the stadium , he would be out by now . No supporter would stand for such dross .
Curle is a fraud and he is getting away with it

The problem is , he can’t even deliver a sound defensive display against a team that played a few days ago .
Anyone that thinks this clown should stay is nothing short of deluded . Promote from within because anything is better than this dross

I dare anyone to state they are enjoying the football this season. Surely football is an entertainment industry. There are plenty of other pastimes for the population to enjoy once lockdown ends and as a Club we have to compete for that share of a persons free time and budget. For pretty much all of this season and the majority of last there has been no entertainment, would you continue going to the Cinema twice a week throughout the year to watch a film hoping that amongst the dross you might be able to watch a good movie once or twice a year, you just wouldn’t go, you would find something else to do with your time that left you with a ‘high’. Last night was an opportunity to leave fans with a high and we totally missed it. The pitch is dreadful, it looks non league, having been in the East Stand recently its non league, we can barely pass to one another, it’s non league (Smith as example misplaces a pass from 2 yards, Hoskins constantly going back with ball which is then lofted aimlessly forward and a minute later we are conceding a penalty because we lost possession). True, there is no right for us to win games etc but Curle is getting away with it as there are no fans in the ground. If we are open for business next season I think supporters will be voting with their feet if we don’t remain in this Division as a bit like everything else we could then be heading for Non League

The problem is, in the system he plays possibly our most creative wide players are too busy going the other way. I suppose he wants them to get forward and deliver crosses but for whatever reason we get penned in. I've also noticed that when they do venture forward we don't seem to cover then adequately resulting in most teams exploiting the space.

Point being our better players are struggling to perform as well as the rest in this system, thats why they're in and out of the side
