Title: Away at the Imps...Saturday 23.01.21
Post by: GrangeParkCobbler on January 20, 2021, 23:04:10 pm
I don't hold out much hope of this one going ahead given the weather, but I'll do a preview anyway!!

We travel to Lincoln, who were knocked off their perch atop the League on Tuesday on goal difference by Hull. That said they're sitting pretty with 42 points from 21 games so far under our old friend Mr Appleton.
Its a quick return fixture following their 4-0 win at Sixfields just before Christmas. That result has prompted a five game unbeaten run, four of them wins, and they've scored 16 goals in those 5 games.
Without a league game since 9th January their last game was in fact a 4-0 PJT Trophy victory over Accrington. Lincoln have a small squad and injury issues, so much so they they could only name four subs for that last game, and Robbie Gotts who actually scored in that game was subsequently called back from what was supposed to be a season long loan by Leeds and sent straight out to Salford to gain more playing time, Zac Elbouzedi who also started that game has been loaned out too now, to Bolton Wanderers thereby reducing the Imps squad even further. Maybe a signing or two before Saturday?? Morgan Rogers is the only recent arrival coming in on loan from Manchester City after impressing in a Papa Johns Trophy match for City's Under-21's against Lincoln in December.

Lincoln have lost four league games at home this season. Bristol Rovers, Portsmouth, Sunderland and Shrewsbury have all left the LNER Stadium with maximum points, however the Imps have won all but one of the other games, only one League draw so far there, last time out against Peterborough.

Jorge Grant now has 11 goals to his name and is top scorer, Antony Scully with 9, Lewis Montsma with 8 and Brennan Johnson with 7 are other goal threats, plus Tom Hopper who has six.

Bucking the trend with City's lack of draws this season, our head to head with them actually has a high proportion of draws, 25 in the league, and we have 15 wins a piece over the years. In the 27 League games at Sincil Bank we have won just three times, there have been 14 draws and ten wins for the home side. Some quirky results over the years, we lost 5-4 there in 1977, got hammered 8-0 in 1980 and lost 4-3 in 1993.

We are without a win in four games against them (3 defeats one draw) however prior to that we did the double over them in 2010/11 season, our last win there was a 2-0 win in November 2010 with goals from Dean Beckwith and a first goal in Cobblers colours for John Johnson.

Anthony Backhouse will be the man who has to decide whether the pitch is playable first, he's reffed 18 games so far this season handing out cards in every one, a total of 64 yellow and two reds. We've not encountered him since the end of the 2018/19 season, when we came from behind to draw 2-2 with Yeovil, the game which saw the Glovers relegated to the National League. His last appointment at Lincoln came in September 2019  and saw the home side trashed 6-0 by Oxford, although he did take charge of their 0-0 draw at Fleetwood earlier this season.

God, I remember going there for the John Johnson goal, how is that more than a decade ago now! I think like us they'll be desperate to get the game on, having also has two games in a row lost to waterlogging, so let's hope with some better weather before Saturday.

The weather forecast forward for Lincoln is dry and windy so there's a decent chance of this being on.

The Imps forum (I was reading it last night) view appears to be that they'll hammer us.

Someone had produced a statistic - they've scored 60 times this season, we've netted 31 times (must include Cup matches).

We could surprise them with the new lads and Sheehan back.

Nice work as ever GPC. Given my unabated admiration of Crappleton I am absolutely desperate for us to win this, and I am hopeful we will 0-1

A small correction to GPC's review. Lincoln do have a home league draw as they drew with Posh 1-1 on 9th January so they have 1 home draw and we have 1 away draw. Could there be another this week as we have a decent record there coming away with at least a point in over half of the fixtures.
Lincoln's away record is considerably better than their home record as 4 of their 5 defeats have come at home.Having won 4 of their first 5 home games they have only won 2 of the last 6 beating Wigan 2-1 and Burton 5-1 as Jimmy watched his new team. In those 6 games they have not kept a clean sheet and have conceded 11 goals. Given their unremarkable home record perhaps we can travel with some hope despite our defeat in the reverse fixture.

Dan, combining the Imps game with a Rabbie Burns dram sinking session?

Lincoln now a brilliant day out for its pubs and climb up Steep Hill, magnificent cathedral...two good days the season back, despite the FAC last minute defeat.
Missing the off the field entertainment perhaps a little more than what is offered on it methinks!

Anyone’s guess who’s starting tomorrow and what formation we will play. Unsure if Jones  and Sheenan are fit but here’s who I think KC will play tomorrow.

                Mitchell

            Jones Bolger Sheenan
Hoskins                                 Mills

     McWilliams Watson Sowerby

             Miller  Edmondson

I wonder if KC sees Miller as an out and out forward but Considering Rotherham’s remarks about playing 3-5-2 playing him at wing back seems silly   :P

3-0 loss for us
Adams scores a hatrick for Oldham.
The Curle out thread makes a dramatic comeback.

Think a few Saturday drams are in order. Can't see anything other than a loss but would be delighted with a point today.

This is the best team we can put out EXCEPT swop Hoskins for Marshall, granted Marshal isn’t great at defending but is very good going forward, Hoskins just runs around.

Agree, not too far and a decent variety of 'refreshments'.
That's the thing that I'm missing amongst all of this, the social aspect, not necessarily the football.

Team (probably 4-3-3)

Mitchell; Harriman, Jones, Bolger, Mills; McWilliams, Morris, Sowerby; Hoskins, Edmondson, Miller.

Subs: Berry, Horsfall, Watson, Korboa, Ashley-Seal, Rose, Chukwuemeka.

No Sheehan then? Nor Marshall in the 18, and Arnold's minor injury must be worse than first thought.

I think the opposite. Sure it's a shame about Sheehan but other than him it looks a strong team (on paper).

Surely the new players are an unknown quantity, I know everyone loves to get excited about new signings but on paper for me they are on a similar level to what we have already, hopefully KC will do what he did with Morton and take them to a new level.
Had it not been for the last couple of matches I would have probably just thrown the new players in but on the back of a couple of good results and performances I would have liked to have seen a bit more continuity and used at least a couple of them from the bench.

Having no commentary on is really enlightening in some ways because you can hear every word from KC...what's weird is that he's spent at least half the game barking personal instructions at Mills. Why he's singling him out I'm not quite sure, but it's to the point where I wouldn't want to critique Mills on his performance, because he doesn't seem to have any personal freedom to decide what he does with the ball when he gets it or even which side of the man he's marking to stand on at a set piece!

My expert view for what it’s worth.

We dominated up to the point Miller went off.

The midfield three are working well together.

New boys look to be an improvement on what we had.

Mills should be nowhere near dead balls.

Miller needs to learn to overlap and use the pace he is supposed to have.

People criticise our Tim but at least he goes about his job in a professional way and does some homework.

Sometimes we should be thankful for what we have

After hearing this Lincoln commentator I don't think I'll ever complain about Tim O again.

Morris looks decent.
Agreed Morris looks a massive upgrade, he will be even better when he’s fit!

My expert view for what it’s worth.

We dominated up to the point Miller went off.

The midfield three are working well together.

New boys look to be an improvement on what we had.

Mills should be nowhere near dead balls.

Miller needs to learn to overlap and use the pace he is supposed to have.

Agreed but 3 is most likely incorrect and 4 is very harsh 8)

Good to see we've binned the players most likely to breakdown through injury like Holmes and bring in younger fitter reliable players like Miller.

Really bad luck to lose Miller so soon, especially as he's the main one we're betting on to make the difference. If it's a hamstring we'll have lost him for a few weeks. I think Korboa has been put on because in theory he's the most similar player to Miller. Marshall may arguably have been a better option but he's an out and out winger and Korboa isn't.

This is the best team we can put out EXCEPT swop Hoskins for Marshall, granted Marshal isn’t great at defending but is very good going forward, Hoskins just runs around.

Wonder of wonders TP’s Team selection is spot on

Lumping it up to BAS is just a hopeless way of playing. Even when he does get to the first ball he either heads it to no-one and they mop it up, or he gets muscled off it. If we wanted to keep playing this way we should have been loaning BAS to Motherwell and keeping Smith as an off-the-bench option.

Unbelievable overhead kick from outside the box from Danny Rose.

Gonna be positive after this, setting up 4-3-3 and going for the win is a marked change for Curle and there were some decent performances. Still liable to switch off at the back which is a concern but let’s hope we turn up for every game and have a go like we have today.

Also if Miller is out, PLAY MARK MARSHALL IN HIS PLACE

Don't want to be too critical because we've played far worse than that this season and won. If it weren't for some laziness and individual errors at the back as we began to tire, we'd have got something from that. Rose was brilliant in his cameo, and should be starting. Morris had a brilliant debut - him and McWilliams as a midfield pairing made us hard to play through and gave us a bite we've been lacking all season. BAS and Korboa shouldn't be anywhere near the first team.

What a frustrating afternoon. Thought we more than matched them at least for the first 35 minutes until Miller came off. To have the wheels fall off so late is gutting particularly with two sloppy goals. Was painful watching the ball sail over Harriman's head for the second. Rose's goal was superb.
Not helped at all by a commentator who thought every Lincoln player was god's gift and not knowing any Cobblers player besides Bulger.

Not to break out the Curle-isms but there were positives to take. But once again we can't carve our chances into actual opportunities so we'll get nowhere.

With our starting 11 we looked the better team. Tired in the 2nd half and defence stopped for Lincoln's 2nd goal.
But, we passed the ball better scored a great goal, hit the post with another worldy and were refused a blatant penalty, the defender knocked the ball away with his hand after bringing down Hoskins, FACT.

I did like what I saw of Morris, he's obviously not going to be the answer of the creative problem, but looks like he can be an improvement in the midfield as an anchor. Still struggle to see where the creativity comes from - probably Sowerby's job today and he didn't quite create enough. Can't just hope Rose scores something from nothing consistently! We need a right wing-back, like Mills someone who is a natural in that position, and Sheehan coming back will gives us hope we can sort the defence out.

Bas looked a step down from when Miller got injured, BUT he did create the once chance we made all game, the Hoskins penalty shout. Not sure I saw too much much from Edmonson tbh

Said it many times before, Harriman isn't good enough. Nowhere near aggressive enough in his defending. I'm surprised Curle doesn't find an issue with this given his attributes from his own playing career?

Well, you have kept repeating it but KC thinks otherwise. Presumably you have ignored the fact that Sheehan was out?

Nope. Just a bit quicker than Smith chasing the ball.

That's hard-core Melbourne.

I called Harriman out weeks ago and at the start of the match he’s an awful defender, but bringing Korboa and BAS on instead of Marshall and Rose is unforgivable.

Marshall wasn't on the bench, so couldn't come on.

Not too disappointed, ref differently favoured them. Still lacking quality in final third. Miller looked quality. Edmundson, early on looked ok but faded. Rose should be starting possibly ahead of Hoskins. Marshall should have been on the bench. Actually looking forward to the game on Tuesday eve.

No commentary on ifollow for me either. Any reason? Having said that almost preferred just having some background stadium sound. Sorry to disagree with many but thought we were very poor throughout and that Lincoln won comfortably enough without too many problems. Difficult times ahead I fear.

Sheehan is a centre back, and has played at centre back. Harriman is a right back, and played today at right back. If you're going to try to start arguments at least base them on something worthwhile.

Even if their best positions were both at right back, it still would not change my point. My point is that Harriman isn't good enough to play for us.

Depends which audio you chose, there's a choice of Home or Away audio under the settings. Home would have been Radio Lincolnshire and Away would have been nothing as Radio Northampton weren't allowed to travel.

I thought we started very well, we caught Lincoln off guard early on and should have capitalised on the amount of corners we got.

Morris was very solid and allowed us to get our foot on.the ball.
Miller looked quality, j really hope he isn't out for too long. The game changed after he went off.
Edmondson started well but disappeared after Miller went off.

We definitely ran out of steam and ideas in the 2nd half and reverted to type which was disappointing.

The substitutions were awful. We seem to just give up playing football in the 2nd half limping it to BAS who was ineffective.

As for Korboa, I really want him to succeed but he looked like a competition winner today. He looks bereft of confidence and scared to take people on. There was one particular incident where he had Walsh 1 on 1 and just seemed to make no attempt to get to the ball.

100%

Both Ricky and Seal will be in non league  in not to distant future.

Rose and Marshal are best footballers me have, dont understand why they arent starting.

Agreed, based on today’s performances nor are Mills, BAS and Korboa.

i am surprised he played 4 3 3 but it answered where we fit Miller in the side , wide on the left .
The problem is , Mills is a wing back and not a full back whilst Harriman is not really up to division 1 standard . It leaves us exposed down the flanks .
What on earth he was doing bringing Korboa on i don’t know . We strengthen the side by drafting in higher league talent and then bring on non league standard players during the game .
i just hope Miller will not be out for 4/5 weeks .

It is quite clear with those substitutions that K-Kurl has no idea how to change a game. Surely he should retire now.

Missed Tim and Gazman has a point ...'careful  what we wish for' after the Lincoln commentator performance.

As for the game thought we were somewhat unlucky not to gain a point. The Hoskins penalty appeal seemed justified and by the Commentators too! Hoskins hit the post and Rose's goal was a well deserved a sweetner. Can understand Harriman's selection even if some did not - after all this was the guy who was outstanding at Wembley. He has played reasonably well at times at this season. Simply cannot understand the degree the amount of unjust criticism he draws; as one Admin puts it the tinkerman taylor etc the expert untrained view of the moaners. Was astounded by our opening 35/40 mins as we looked the better side, alas with no final cutting edge! Hint to KC. Defensively we were ok but as the midfield tired we began to lose control more so after Miller went off. As for Rose being named as a sub seemed on the face of it a poor one. His goal was magnificent and he should be playing even in place of Hoskins, Harriman etc. Certainly the midfield was capable but a bit disconcerted that during the second half they struggled to assert any meaningful authority; was crying for Mr Watson to add some 'bite'. Bolger was our man of the match for me, Morris introduced himself well but did he fade a bit 2nd half? As for Edmondson , hardly seemed to notice him, sort of beginners display a la Morton. If Rose goal had secured a point then we all be purring but for all that it was a great improvement on some dismal previous displays.  I think KC played the way he did as he had nothing to lose as he suspected a possible loss. In the end we ended up with plenty of plaudits but no points ::)

The audio on Radio Northampton DAB with the ifollow vision worked well, with the bonus of no adverts before the game!

People are appreciating the quality of Tim and co compared to other stations.

I started listening to the audio on Radio Northampton too, but quickly gave up as it was about 30 seconds ahead of the action on the pitch, so what they were saying was not what I was seeing.

I guess watching the game without audio is a bit like watching the game in the stadium without being able to discuss matters with the bloke next to you.

I did get a bit cheesed off with KC shouting 'Millsy' all the time, I thought he was shouting at me !!

Overall I was greatly encouraged by yesterday’s performance - it was just a shame we lost momentum when Miller had to go off, but I’m optimistic that a corner has been turned.

We were actually the better footballing team first half (even Appleton would have to accept that) and dominated possession.  Harriman’s brilliant clearance off the line deserves a mention as it would have been cruel to go in half time 1-0 down.

Unfortunately we couldn’t keep it going in the 2nd half but credit to Lincoln who upped their work rate and pressed us back.

We were unlucky with the penalty appeal because it’s one of those that would be given 50 percent of the time. The defender slid in front of the ball with his challenge and missed it, but also didn’t make contact with Hoskins legs so that’s probably why it wasn’t given.  However Sam had nowhere left to run so you could argue was brought down.  Even then the defender handled the ball while on floor...

If that’d been given we’d probably have come away with a point but all in all the scoreline was about right.

Chose not to watch this on ifollow and listened to our Tim on the radio while watching events unfold across the country on Sky's soccer saturday. Strange that Tim was not allowed to go and had to do his commentary from the studio yet Sky had a reporter at the ground. 1 rule for tv and another for radio.
I was not surprised that we started with a back 4 as I had predicted this for the Blackpool game. The only surprise in the starting 11 was the experienced Rose being replaced by the inexperienced Edmondson who I would have started on the bench. As Korboa was the only wide player on the bench I can see why KC put him on when Miller went off but he is still to prove he is up to it.
More disappointing than the result was the injuries to Miller (hamstring, so could be missing for a while) and Sowerby (knee, as he initially tried to carry on hopefully not too serious).

There's a case to be made the first 45 minutes was our best half of football so far this season. I was listening to the Lincoln commentary and they were very complimentary about our attempts to play football through the midfield. They saw it as a complete transformation in terms of style and work rate from the dour hoofball we had served up in our 4-0 defeat against them a month ago.

I think we finally saw glimpses of what Curle has been trying to achieve with the 4-3-3 formation which we started the season with. The movement of Miller and Hoskins either side of Edmondson caused them a lot of problems.

However, the problem with this formation IMO is that you need a very specialist type of player to play in the 'wide forward' role. Miller is perfect because he's pretty much a hybrid of a striker and a winger. This is probably controversial, but I also thought Hoskins (a similarly 'hybrid' player) had a very good game in this role and looked dangerous when running with the ball and pace.

However, it was soon clear that the likes of Korboa and BAS lack the kind of specialised game intelligence to come in and replace one of the wide forwards. It also wasn't really working when we tried playing Rose in this role earlier in the season.

However, his superb cameo at the end suggests it's worth giving him another go alongside a frontman with better movement (Edmondson rather than Smith)

According to stats by Wyscout, Edmondson didn’t have a single shot at goal, completed just eight passes and had zero touches inside the penalty area.

In fact, the loaned-out Leeds forward offered absolutely nothing for Northampton going forward. Zero passes into the box, zero dribbles, zero progressive runs and zero fouls won.

I'd be interesting to know if this is actually true, and whether a scouting network actually keeps track of what our players do at this level. Most of the time I'm pretty certain the BBC just guesses shots on target and possession in the report. If true, I'd be interested to see how the stats compared to other Strikers, because I can't imagine they'd be much better. We were far more solid in the middle, but really struggled to do threaten much.

It's difficult to judge becaues Lincoln have statistically joint best defence in the League, and it felt like a better performance, but that shots on target figure looks also similar to what we've seen for almost the entire season so far.
