Title: What do you think of Sixfields Stadium?
Post by: guest168 on September 15, 2021, 10:23:12 am
FGR ground, it's not a stadium !!, looked really clean and tidy, even the advertising hoardings, perhaps they were all new. It also had a very modern digital scoreboard (in a weird low location) and some scrolling digital advertising hoardings.

Atmosphere was ok considering only 2500 crowd, they had a drummer,  they had home standing behind each goal.

Sixfields just looks so old and tired, although we have a big scoreboard it's not that easy to read.

What do you guys think, what would you do to improve it.  Do you like away fans just in the East?

Please please can we just have genuine comments, no sniping, no trying to score points, I really want to encourage some of those who rarely post to have a voice.

Thanks everyone

(sorry updated title as i didn't mean Sixfields Area)

I don't care about the scoreboard, I know the score.

We don't need a drum. It's been done before.

Sixfields does look tired and in need of tarting up.

I've no idea how we improve Sixfields. We need more fans, but if it was that easy it would have been done.

I don't think standing will make any difference to our crowds. We didn't pack the Country Ground out.

Sustained success on the pitch is the only way.

I don't know why you mention FGR. As seems fashionable at the moment individuals with a large amount of money (as opposed to mega) seem to like to take clubs with a small supporter base up the leagues. What happens to the team or the ground when their sugar daddy no longer pours the cash in who knows?

As regards Sixfields it is obviously tired and tatty around the edges which is probably what you want to hear.

Much like TFMH I am sitting on the fence but until progress is made regarding the East Stand I would hardly expect the owners to be splashing the cash around except for the absolute essentials.

Sixfields is typical of its time. Despite the half finished East, its fit for the level we're at.

That might not sound particularly progressive or optimistic but its the facts.

When we are established in League 1 and pushing for promotion / play offs on a consistent basis, then I'll join the clamour to double capacity.

For now though, I'd rather see money spent on improving quality on the pitch rather than around it....

I don't see it as embarrassing as some do, but equally wouldn't have a picture of it as my laptop / phone wallpaper.

With regards to a drummer, if we get a drummer we also need to get a sniper. Nothing says tin pot, non league bunch of c***s more than a f***ing drummer. Im not a fan!

Outside I think more needs to be done to make it look sexy. Its just bland now. I think something like photos of legends or great moments as window stickers to cover the full length. The ones where you can still see out of the windows but gives more to look at outside. Can we paint the grey corrugate in claret? Or the support pillars in claret.

I think there are quite a few ways the Sixfields could be improved and, at the same time, make more money for NTFC. Lets start with Carr's Bar, at £4.20 a pint it's quite a bit dearer than the Tavern, why not have an "happy hour" from opening time until 1.45, all beers £3.50. I'm sure most Cobblers fans would prefer to support the club rather than Greene King who own the Tavern. Also, it can be difficult to get served in Carr's, so why not have a bottle bar just inside the door to help with that. Get a couple of old Porta Cabins on the South Car Park for the away fans to drink in. Offer free tickets to a few fans to "Tart" the cabins up a bit and make it look welcoming, Fit a large awning outside Carr's in case it rains.
Get some decent pies into the snack bars, plenty of local butchers sell some lovely pies , Sauls of  Spratton, Lee's of Earls Barton or, best of all, Measures of Brampton, Huntingdon.
I've heard a few people going on about broken windows, surely we must have a few glaziers in our fan base who would sort these out for a few free tickets or hospitality at a match. We make no effort what so ever to utilise any of our fan bases skills.
Maybe once or twice a year ask for some volunteers to wash the bird sh*t off the seats again for some small rewards. I little spent here and there just generally tarting things up would make a big difference

Bring back cheerleaders at half time.
Put pictures on the cladding in the ends of the West Stand like at Bournemouth. Brighten it up a bit.
Stop the half time pizza nonsense.
Bring back shoot the boot.
Kiss Cam at half time.
Introduce a swear box to raise funds for redevelopment from Jeema.
Do random draw of 6 season ticket holders for a free hospitality package each game.
More brass bands.
Prize draw for a week in Florida or Dubai with Kelvin or David.
Pictures of DC for people to stick unwanted chewing gum on rather than drop it.
Move to Franklins Gardens

I reckon I could take her over 5 sets.

Well the most obvious fcuking answer is for our owners to finish the east stand like they promised however many years ago, regardless of it making economic sense or not.
For anyone visiting for the first time it has to be the biggest eyesore.

Once that is done the rest will fall in place and we'll be playing championship football before you know it

I went to watch Charlton last week and the drummers (there were 2) created a right racket but did get a great proportion of the 13000 crowd clapping and cheering along. Lincoln had a drummer in their stand and when 10000 were there it had the same effect. Trumpeters and drummers at Wembley……they work when there is a big crowd. Won’t have the same effect at Sixfields!!

The Valley was all contactless, no cash taken anywhere in the ground, and the turnstiles were completely automated…bar code entry.

Reference has been made to Sixfields looking tired….and offering free tickets to local businesses in return for a bit of work….I thought this was already being done? There was a chap who was caretaker at a local school, he got a free season ticket for doing bits and bobs around the ground.

The ground itself as it is just needs tidying up and certain aspects brought into the 2020’s rather than still look all 1994…..it’s amazing what a lick of paint can do!

Ahhhh I get it.....
Ask a few of us what we think, then put another wordy slide into the Trust deck to further slate the club.
Just out of interest.... is there any reason why the Trust board on here can't name themselves so we know who is talking to us or is that a secret?

Genuinely most of the suggestions are just tinkering round the edges aren't they.  What real difference do any of the suggestions make in the long run?

Currently Sixfields does what it needs to do in league two so in other words....adequate.

Honestly though, I would do one of two things.  Either knock the whole thing down and start again building a 30k+ stadium on the same site with a ground containing everything you would need to support a top championship club.  Or hand the keys back to the council and do the same thing on a brand new site.  We could play at the Saints ground while this is being done.

It could be funded by a mixture of enabling development, council, wealthy local businessmen, crowd funding and grants.

It's been done elsewhere as we've seen in MK, Coventry, Derby, Leicester and so on.  If they can do it then why can't we.

I don't think the England band owe us anything but PTS owe us £70,000.
I would not want a 30,000 stadium, at the moment, with us unlikely to get over 6000 in this division and probably no more than 10,000 in division 1 with teams who bring a large following. This equate to only 1 seat in 5 taken in div.2 and 1 seat in 5 taken in div.1. When we play at Stadium MK the atmosphere is generated from the away end with us all being seated together. Very little from MK supporters spread around the rest of the stadium. I prefer a smaller capacity with a higher % of seats filled until we are near to needing anything much larger.

We are told these days everyone's view matters so here's mine.

I hate it. I stopped going even when I lived in town and only went away, now that says a lot. If a diehard wont go how are new supporters supposed to be enticed and how many potential customers are we losing?

I don't buy this crap that it's adequate for league two, as its absolutely not for league one and isn't that where we are aiming? Due to our location, away followings of over 2000 could regularly be expected in league one and when a large crowd is anticipated it stirs up home fans into going too. 2000 plus away could quite easily create a 10,000 plus home gate here. Currently we will never know.

My perspective it would be a perfect stadium if the West stand (design) of two tiers, continued and wrapped around both the north and south ends. The East stand would be fine as now intended predominantly media/corporate and stand alone. My guess, this would make it around 18-20k?

Then again as long as I have a hole in my arse or we could just wait to win the Championship first... ;D

You talk about the club currently losing potential customers which is a fair concern, but the point seems to be about the capacity of the stadium. I would say there has virtually never been an issue about getting tickets and this is not an issue to new supporters. On the other hand the stadium is now looking shabby and uninviting, so maybe more of the money should be channeled in that direction. I would say a stadium of 18-20k with the attendances we have had in the last couple of years in league 1 and 2 and the lack of atmosphere there would be with so many empty seats would actually be a barrier to new customers.

100% knock it down and start again. Or at least fill in the corners. But I was coming at it more from a budget friendly tart it up approach which is what I thought the thread was about.

You talk about the club currently losing potential customers which is a fair concern, but the point seems to be about the capacity of the stadium. I would say there has virtually never been an issue about getting tickets and this is not an issue to new supporters
I agree, there are not many times when you can't get a ticket BUT it's where those tickets are that's the problem. Take this Saturday's game and a new fan fancies going, A/ They cant buy a ticket online, due to us not having enough capacity for away fans. B/ If they go to the Box Office the only tickets likely to be available are in the corners/at the front where, if it rains, you get soaked and C/ it's difficult to get 2 seats or more together. Not going to encourage that fan to come back again is it ?

Hi Singcobb, so what are you thoughts (and dreams) for Sixfields

The ultimate dream would be that it is our training ground that is also home for Northmapton Ladies, local football big games and other sports while we are playing in a new 50,000 seat stadium on the edge of town.

In reality I would like to see the east finished, the whole place given a bit of a make over, Carr's Bar extended(either with awning or bricks and mortar) and a new substantial bar/food area behind the north(just think how much money we loose to the Tavern each home game), something done to improve the atmosphere(I emailed Gareth suggesting they get an accoustic engineer in to do an assesment). When and only when we are selling out at least a quarter of our home fixtures would I like to see the corners filled in as a start to increase the capacity.

Thanks Sing, do you think increasing the capacity behind the goals would improve the atmosphere. I would prefer to add seats there first rather than in the corners. Corners would be great to create the wrap around. Not sure why clubs don't at least fill the corners with panels of some sort. They could then be used as very big and visual advertising or player images etc.?

I love the location, tons of parking, surrounding amenities....compared to the majority of crap holes we visit. I know some people hold opposing views but their fault for living in the Eastern District or Kingsthorpe.  ;D

The ground itself. Catering is poor and expensive but no worse than most and I'm sure a financial decision by the club to do what they do. It'd be difficult to run anything on such a limited basis. Maybe a local link with an independent but reckon the food prices would still be high.
Getting in/out is fine, even if largish queues. Compare to Coventry when a cash turnstile took almost 20 minutes for a queue of about a dozen to get in.

Just about anywhere in the West Upper provides a good, unrestricted view. Find the North depressing and far too low down. The East if it's warm is OK.
Seats and leg room are pretty poor but appreciate we're not in BA first class.
I would probably attend more at short notice if better seats were available as opposed to the wings and lower seats, especially for £24.
Poor/no atmosphere usually but that's not a new issue and often connected to what's going on in front of us.

Away days are definitely better and something to look forward to but that's not entirely due to the ground.

Increasing the capacity without filling it would have a detrimental effect on the atmosphere I think. I like your idea for covering the corners for more advetising space.

What I really think is the stadium should not be run by the football club, it simply doesn't work, in fact the stadium is a milestone around the football clubs neck. It really should be a stadium management company on behalf of the council and community to make full use year round.

If the council had the foresight to take full control, spend £30m now (mortgaged) and develop it further to a superb 25,000 (this was the minimum capacity requirement for European rugby fixtures prior to covid) They could quite easily charge the two guaranteed tenants £50-100k per match  depending on attendance and easily make the repayments.

I say two tenants as given a European standard stadium on their doorstep with the correct facilities at a fantastic rent, The Saints would sell in a flash and bank the cash.

Sixfields, could and should be a huge civic asset of a stadium used for endless events for the Northamptonshire public if professionally managed, with 24/7 facilities to generate profit.

Cover the pitch in June for the Emma Raducanu womens invitation tennis tournament?  :P

It’s really not that difficult to enhance Sixseats, put the top tiers onto the North and South stands, this would give us enough capacity 10k until IF we ever got into the Championship.
The North can then have bars and entertainment at the back as could the South for visiting fans.
I am lead to believe that the foundations are already in place for the extension, this would give home fans another 1000 home premium seats along with the West upper this would be enough for the casual fan to rock up to the stadium and get a decent view.
Personally I’d rather they spent the £3m doing that than bodge up that dreadful East stand.

I loved the County Ground but that was a real embarrasement. I can remember walking down to Sixfields for the first time when it opened and had a tear in my eye, I thought it was wonderful. But now the East Stand debacle and the lack of any improvements is embarrasing in itself. Just finish it off and make ends bigger. By the way is it me or is the keg room in the West Stand diminishing?

Then again as long as I have a hole in my arse or we could just wait to win the Championship first... ;D

Great concept (new ground) but we’d effectively have Stadium MK and be rattling around in it. The essential missing ingredient is an ambitious and forward thinking council. The set up and ambition of our two professional teams has never been further apart. There are plenty of events, concerts, conferences and lucrative one offs that could be hosted in Northampton. Sixfields is probably the ideal location and could easily ground share down the road if the place was levelled. Dreamland.

Hmmmm...I'm a little sceptical?

Anyway, what we need for Sixfields and the club is sustainability. And, until KT, DB, WNC et-al.... ;)

Pave paradise put up a parking lot.
Sell off the whole site.
Use profits to compulsory purchase the Beacon Bingo site and Houses adjoining Franklin’s Gardens.
Increase the Gardens to 25-30k capacity and share.
The cost covered in return for shared ownership of site.
Open up the Slipper.

Rather than that. I think we should all enjoy the million and one ways that Random regurgitates his obsession.

I've even thought of some future topics for him and those well known Trust cheerleaders (The Trustites)

Is Sixfields too grey

Is Sixfields full of devil worshipers

Has Kelvin got a tiny penis

Do Kelvin Thomas's eyebrows meet

Did Gareth Willsher put Novichok on the front door of KPWMC

Are the Starlings really spy drones controlled from Florida

Is the club shop just a front for laundering the Triads money

Is Nick Ancell an undermining influence at the club, inserted surreptitiously by Darragh MacAnthony

Just a few to look forward to.

Yes to all the above. Particularly the KPWMC one as I’ve been in there regularly and always feel slightly squiffy when leaving, occasionally the room spins. Clear evidence

I can't speak for others on here who are not anti KT. But I fought DC on every front, even leading to me receiving letters from his solicitors in the end. DID YOU? I also sent emails to the council imploring them not to release the money. Emails that are now evidence. DID YOU. DID THE TRUST???
