Title: Łalford City Away 25.09.21
Post by: Dan on September 18, 2021, 21:02:54 pm
Manchester city centre will be heaving with United at home to Villa, the Courteneers at the cricket ground, and the hoards from Northampton.

I hate everything about Salford City and would love to see us smash them.

One day we will meet and have a beer Manny. And it'll be a great day  ;D

Really do hope that continues mate. Our group have got daft train times so should be fairly well oiled  8) Looking forward to it.

I see that Turnbull cannot make the starting 11 at Salford and is bench warming. So far this season all the points they have are from their home games, 2 wins (Newport 3-0, Bradford 1-0), 2 draws (L.Orient 1-1, Sutton 0-0) and 1 defeat (Swindon 0-1). So they have only conceded 2 in 5 games but like us they have only scored more than once on 1 occasion.

We have only played them twice and beat them both times in the league. I found this out too great delight at about 3am following a night out whilst arguing with my Villa supporting flat mate at the time  ;D ;D

Match preview time.....

We travel to the Peninsula Stadium, Moor Lane in Kersal Moor to face Salford City. It will be only our second visit to the 5106 capacity ground, but then thats hardly surprising given that they only entered the Football League in 2019.
Moor Lane has been transformed from its old appearance with all four sides being redeveloped in just 10 months..... it is possible apparently! The Man United old boys of the Neville brothers, Scholes, Giggs, Butt, and Beckham each own 10% of the club with the remaining 40% owned by Singaporean business man Peter Lim.

City are now in their third year in League 2, an 11th place finish in the Covid shortened season was followed by an 8th placed finish last season, the team finishing two points short of a playoff place. Its fair to say that this season has not gone as well as planned. The Reds sit in 17th place with eight points from 8 games, just two league wins earned to date, although those have come in their last two home games (3-0 v Newport and 1-0 over Bradford). They have drawn with Leyton Orient and Sutton with their defeat coming against Swindon. They put up a brave fight against Derby in the Carabao Cup, drawing 3-3 at Pride Park before bowing out in the shootout.

Gary Bowyer is the man in charge, the former Bradford, Blackpool and Blackburn boss has won 8 and lost 8 of his 21 games in charge. Bowyer took over in March 2021 following Richie Wellens sacking, he had only been in the post for 6 months.

On to players, Josh Morris is a threat, he joined from Fleetwood in the summer, Conor McAleny came in from Oldham and Matty Lund from Rochdale. Former Cobblers in their ranks are Jordan Turnbull who has made 57 appearances for them since leaving us and still after all these years there is the goalscoring threat of Ian Henderson who failed to score for us in 33 appearances back between 2007 and 2009 yet has gone on to score 173 goals, the bulk of those in a seven year spell with Rochdale from whom he joined Salford. He has 20 in 57 for City and is their top league scorer this season, albeit with only two goals! Morris has three overall. Another threat and a player who impressed me when we played there in 2019 is Brandon Thomas-Asante, although a third of his appearances for Salford have come off bench.

Head to head....well two games....and we can proudly boast that we have a 100% record over our opponents! A 2-0 win back in October 2019 thanks to a Hoskins penalty and a second goal from Turnbull was followed up by our 2-1 win at Salford in the rain back in January 2020. We fell behind to a Jack Baldwin goal, but Hoskins again got on the scoresheet before Andy Williams grabbed a winner in front of more than 1000 Cobblers fans who had headed north that day. The crowd for that game only totalled 2919!

Referee for the game will be Anthony Backhouse. He's been on the league list since 2017 and looks to be a bit "card happy" with over 100 yellows dished out every full season since, and so far this season his tally is 35 yellows in just 8 games. We have not seen him since he reffed our 2-1 League defeat at Lincoln last January, prior to that his last game with us was the 2-2 final day draw with Yeovil in 2019. He reffed two Salford home games last season and both resulted in 2-0 wins for the Reds so they may see him as a lucky omen of sorts!!

Thought you were going to claim super Sam as a forward!
It might make sense but it's not very progressive.
Leaving Pinnock and Et out doesn't help my mood.
At least we have Koiki, he'll rip em to shreds down the left

1-1 HT….a good 10 minutes and then nothing much happening for either side.

We are hitting a lot of long balls to Rose, and to be fair he’s winning most of them.

Full backs not getting forward much, Koiki more than McGowan though who has hardly touched the ball.

Mostly going nowhere tho’. Not sure about sitting back; midfield getting fwd well. Sowerby spraying it around well. Rose might have scored when we’ll placed. Our goal was good with Lewis heading iota to wrong foot the keeper. Their goal followed botched clearance. Neat flick by Lund when nothing on. Touch of class there. Rose Hoskins ping ok , Lewis usual self,  our right winger not up to much. Oki fairly tightly marked need him in midfield more! Overall we are doing ok but def could be better.

We’re going to be here till 6….game kicked off late for reasons unknown, 4.10 second half kick off and now Rose injured being treated on the pitch for 5 mins and counting.

Possibly, but then we didn’t close down the cross, Roberts could have come and punched away but didn’t, and the Koiki was beaten to the ball….plenty of chances to stop the goal.

We’d been warned earlier when another cross from that side was missed and bounced off the base of the post.

Can't deny that Salford were good value for at least a point, but a frustrating and preventable goal to see the extra points slide.

I have to say apart from the first 20 minutes I wasn't hugely impressed with us today - we were poor on the ball and didn't really do anything in the second half apart from score a goal. But we're difficult to beat and the players work very hard for each other and that should absolutely be the positives to take out, as well as the fact we were nowhere near our best and still nearly won.

Good atmosphere in the away end today, but that was the strangest home atmosphere I've ever encountered. You couldn't even really hear the Salford fans celebrate when they scored and the closest thing to a chant from them arrived in the 95th minute after the equaliser. Still, I've ticked it off the 92 now.

There’s more hope of that than you being elected to the cobblers board Tony  ;D
In fairness Tony it was a decent result.(still no goals from the strikers though)
Good luck if you decide to run for the board position.
Fair play for putting yourself forward
Respect for that.

I’m sticking to my guns and won’t attend matches until the redevelopments finished.
Be honest , did you think I’d still be waiting to come back after three seasons??

By the time I return I may have forgotten how to get to the stadium ;D

Good to read an accurate report no bias at all. Also it was good to see a mention of the terrace away end, nearly full too. In many ways they ensured they kept the ‘boys’ at it and their celebrations after our second goal was worth the admission alone. Individually Salford had some good players, fortunately for us our defence was better than theirs as at times it was our defence against their Fwds and Midfield. As Fez rightly suggests with a bit more bravery/confidence going fwd undoubtedly we would have gained all the points! Team spirit gained us the single point. Worth it though.

On the highlights it looks like the ball for their second goal comes from a long way out and the header was from no more than six yards. Could Roberts have come for it?

Really good atmosphere in away end. Team wasn't worth more than a point. A good spirit in group but very pragmatic. Feels more like Calderwood's team than Brady's . I guess we need to let them grow but it does feel like there's no quality further up the pitch. Been there before but stay positive !!!!!

Disappointed that we threw that away as that was a very winnable game. That said, we weren’t at our best and probably would concede that they deserved a point.

Salford can be thankful that we brought our singing voices because that was the weirdest atmosphere I’ve ever experienced. Not even a noise for a last minute leveller. They won’t last in the league for long, there isn’t any appetite for it. And on that basis, I’m thrilled.

Winnable game next week too get us going again so we have to go and bounce back.

The whole set up is strange!! To only attract 1360 home fans on a Saturday is pretty poor...yet despite this they can afford to only charge Ł15 admission, can subsidise their away travel coaches (Ł7.50 to Walsall, Ł15 to Colchester for example) and can bring in players, pay good wages, have a known name manager and just got themselves a new head of physical performance from Plymouth.

Built on sand and they will soon get fed up with no success after paying double the going rate for players .
We are work in progress but we are going to have to be braver .
As i have said before , we rely on our luxury wide players to come off and they simply have not .

I'm not great at navigation through the companies house website, but I think this is where the main accounts are for Salford City. If so, they have lost around 3.5million a year for each of the last two years, which is to be expected, given their obviously ginormous wage and transfer outlays, and the fact that they probably generate very little income from the gates and sponsorship!

What is absolutely clear is that there is no chance of them ever being able to generate a sustainable football club/business model from it all, and the higher up the ladder they go the more that loss will be trying to compete with rival clubs.

Still, they've got the money and good reputations at stake (the directors) so they will most probably be around for a fair bit longer!

On a similar theme......we have always had a drain from Northampton to the big teams.....coaches have been run to Old Trafford and Anfield for years, and the amount of people who travel down by train to London to watch Arsenal/Spurs/Chelsea is increasing.

I went by train to Salford and coming back I was astounded by the amount of Everton fans travelling back to Rugby and Northampton via Crewe.

We lose so many "locals" to the big boys.....sad to see really.

Whilst I agree to a point a number of these will be people who moved here or the 2nd generations of same. ED cockney spill over etc.
That they go and support is fine by me as they put the effort in to do so.

The ones I have issue with are the ones who will happily stand in the pub shouting at the tv but never go anywhere and refer to their team be it Utd, Citeh, Chelsea etc.

This should be the first life rule for all.
The point of debate only being should it be dad's team or the local team if they aren't one and the same.
I also think in the event that they are different It's OK to support one and 'follow' the other.

Club support is a hot topic in our house. I support the cobblers, my son supports Man Utd and my daughter supports Leeds United. To say it costs a fortune is an understatement! I have to be a member at Old Trafford so I can take my son to a few games a season, before Leeds got in the Prem we could get free tickets as my daughter plays in the girls academy but that's not so easy now. They both come with me sometimes when I go and watch the Town. I think clubs like Salford will always struggle with getting a good crowd, especially when Man Utd are at home. I sometimes go and watch Ossett United in the NPL and if Leeds are at home then you can knock quite a few off the attendance.

Of course you can support any side - but to be meaningful it might be best to have some soul allegiance. No matter the results you just merely put up with it and hope for better. Most school boys adopt an interest in the team in the news. So for me it was Newcastle United and their FA Cup exploits. In a visit to Scotland my parents stayed over night near Cowdenbeath so that became a family talisman to follow. My Father used to watch Everton of Dixie Dean fame. Most people adopt the team in the Town they have lived in. Some of this explains the two astonishing attendances at Wembley last Century!

the simple fact is … you are born to support a team , you can’t choose to support a team …
Of course , you can have a soft spot for another team but that is not in your blood.

Sounds good...but absolute tosh!
You have never been in a position clearly...but still think you can pontificate!

I lived in Latvia for eight years, and was a formative member of FK Riga's only ever fan group or base...later Cool Cats (my idea). They literally had no fans, save WAGS and odd bloke - entrance was then free, prior to myself, girlfriend and then a dozen, sometimes up to forty or so who would travel everywhere!

Songs in Latvian and some translated into English, flags (the 4 metre one made it Darlington at the Reynolds Arena) smoke bombs and the camaraderie is probably what I miss most about my time there!
FK Rīga went out of business, having finally made the European Intertoto, beating Bohemians before losing to Elfsborg, the year we moved to England in 2008!

I agree to a small extent about there only being one team, but so many external factors can and do affect such sweeping soundbite statements!

I guess I buck the trend, having moved from 'Big' to NTFC.

As a 10-year old I decided to support Chelsea when I watched them played Leeds in the 1970/71 cup final games. My dad took me to Stamford Bridge once and we also watched them play a couple of time at Highfield Road.

I have never lived in Northants but went to Nene College in '79 where, in the absence of any bands playing or decent movies showing, I made the classic mistake of going to watch a tuesday night Cobblers game. The following 40-odd years, as they say, is history.

And I don't look out for the Chelsea score.

What drew you to the Cobblers ?

Ha, good question...I get attracted to the underdog and s***e teams - hence FK Rīga not Skonto, Torino not Juve, Rayo Vallecano not... ;D

Actually, lived in Northampton till I was five or six years old, then driving over every Saturday with family to visit my gran, as a kid. She lived in Kingsley, the big (as a nine year old) imposing maroon facade of the main stand on Abington Avenue drew me.
Cavernous stands, clicking of turnstiles, singing in the Hotel End, John Farrington et-al did the rest!

Personally don’t really get why people get so precious about the number of supporters a club has or why and how fans choose to support their clubs. Just because a team has a big following for me it doesn’t make them any better or deserving than those less supported.

It’s often mentioned that we should aim for the championship, if (by some miracle!) we did achieve that would we then be the tinpot club who didn’t deserve to be there?.

Does that include every Stone Island clad lad this side of the border that thinks it makes them more British to don a shirt in Benidorm and elsewhere?  ;)

Is Stone Island in the Caribbean?

Another thread dominated by self righteous hypocrisy.

What is it with people, that they honestly think they have any right to tell anyone what to do or follow in their lives. As long as you’re not hurting someone, or breaking a law, what the fcuk does it matter.

I know 100's of Cobblers supporters who have a soft spot for prem teams, or even non prem teams. Nobody is a bigger or better supporter based on the twaddle in this thread. The bar/criteria isn’t set by pious divs on here, who spout unwritten rules about gauging someone’s affiliation.

Hardly dominated. Probably 8 or 9 posts of people suggesting that it would be better to support your local team than pick a successful team at random with whom you have no affilliation, when you're a kid, at the expense of the place you were born, raised, live, went to school, work and will probably die. Just because you don't support a prem or non prem team as well as NTFC doesn't make you a div.

Ever tried disagreeing with someone’s opinion without being so patronising?

Plenty of ‘tin pot’ clubs make it to the championship. We spent three seasons there! Wycombe went up and down recently. For two seasons we did not look out of place: except the ground!

Burton, Wycombe, Yeovil and back in the day Shrewsbury with their submersible ground.

I didn't say that. my point was clearly about people who dictate what is right and wrong, when there is no wrong when it comes to who you choose to support.
