Title: Does Keith Curle deserve a good reception on Tuesday?
Post by: guest3063 on November 21, 2021, 12:56:02 pm
Our former manager brings his Oldham Athletic team to town this coming Tuesday. Given the fact he got us a promotion but never had the opportunity to celebrate this achievement with the fans will hopefully not be forgotten by our supporters and I for one hope he will get a decent reception when he takes his place in the dugout.

I know his football was awful at times, but let's give him the thanks (before the game, not during) he surely deserves.

Do others think the same? (Even some that didn't like his playing style). I will be interested to hear what people think.

He didn't strike me as someone who was particularly keen to engage with the supporters. I wouldn't boo him.

I didn't like his playing style or conversational abilities but I think it only right that he is given a warm welcome before the game.

Well from the large number of responses I take it he won't be getting a decent reception. A bit of a shame for one of the few managers in history to get us a promotion.

Shaun McWilliams also gave him that credit in yesterday's interview.

Do Curle and Hasselbaink get to claim they didn't get a relegation on their CV's from their time with us ?

How many of Arsenal's managers have got them a promotion !

I might extend a polite applause for a brief moment despite being far from his biggest fan during his time. I was happy enough to celebrate round his car after Wembley after all.

Yes he does.
Then hopefully during the game "Curly, Curly what's the score" :)

Certainly not our best manage but an honest servant to the club during his tenure - yes a brief round of applause would be a good response.

A polite round of applause and then nothing but abuse every time they launch it .
Centre halves have to be strong and win every second ball . If you do that he has no answer .

Yes, because we now play tippy-tappy football right  ::). I wasn't a fan of his way of playing and prefer JB's brand, but there are still a fair number of long balls mixed in. Anyway, overall I think KC did a decent job for us, and agree that he deserves a round of applause before kick-off.

Who said we play tippy tappy football ? i didn’t .
A mixture of styles is always what is required and the football we play now is infinitely better than Curle’s caveman approach from 1990 .
Amazed he is still in employment .

I wasn't Curle's biggest fan, nothing against him as a person (on the contrary he seems like quite a decent bloke), I just don't care for his brand of football.
Regardless of that, he did get us promoted and we never really got a chance to thank him for that, so I'll be applauding him before the game.

I would agree that appreciation should be shown before the game and see no reason for any snide comments once the game has got underway. Both he and us have moved on.

Whatever people say about him

He turned Charlie Goode into our first million pound player.
Got us promoted
Bashed up the team in the final 4-0
Signed Frazier Horsfall.

Staying up was always going to be a big ask.
I think he's done enough to deserve a warm reception

Agree 100%. We never got to thank him for those wonderful 2 games 18 months ago.
That final at Wembley is definitely in my Top 5 all time Cobblers moments.

Nailed it. Though things ended on a somewhat sour note, he deserves plenty of respect from the supporters for those reasons in particular.

I also happen to think he's doing a fine job at Oldham with all the difficulties they've had. 15 points from 17 is not great obviously, but you have to look at it in context, and I don't think anyone else in the league could rival them for number of issues both on and off the field, so to have steered them to 4 successes and a position of 2 points clear of the relegation zone is some going. They could easily be a little bit adrift at this point.

Always remember when in a home game v Ssunthorpe their player went down as if poleaxed. When he eventually rose some wag in approx seat 180 started to intone the parable on Lazarus with "he has risen" booming out. So some comments can be heard whether snide, insults or worse!

None of Oldham's last 15 managers have lasted a calendar year so KC's 8 months is longer than a lot of them. He must have realised when he accepted the job that it was only likely to be short term.

I would have thought that a club sacking a manager should be liable to continue paying him to the end of his contract or offer him a lump sum payment to conclude his tenure (probably less than the total due to the end of his contract).
If we had the first agreement we would not have paid him much as he was appointed at Oldham within a month.
If we paid a lump sum KC did very well out of the deal.

I find the whole thing about paying someone after you have sacked them for being useless completely stupid.
This is one of the things that the EFL needs to look at and put an end to.

There is no way there will be an end to it, you can’t sack players for being useless either without paying them off.
It’s up to the chairman how long a contract he wants to give the manager.

Ok, so have a clause in the contract...or do you think in Keith Curle's case, it's a buyers market?

I don't think you can say KC was "useless" otherwise he would not have got us promoted and we would not have had those 2 unforgettable games to conclude that season. Unfortunately we had a poorer team the next season to compete in a higher division whether that was due to poor recruitment or because of the budget at KC's disposal we could not attract better players we will never know.
It was evident on Tuesday that he is able to change tactics which almost brought him some success but he was too rigid tactically here.

The fact we got promoted was more down to COVID than Keef.

With the the season finishing early the Cobblers were left in a position to be in the play offs, would they have been there if the season had been completed  ? Nobody knows and nobody ever will. To say they only got promoted because of Covid is pure speculation.  Just give the man credit for getting us in the playoffs and then promoted.
