Title: Your most disappointing Cobblers signing
Post by: guest216 on January 10, 2022, 16:04:47 pm
Without a doubt Leon Constantine for me - looked like a lower league Thierry Henry whenever he came up against us but probably the most ineffective striker I've seen at the club. No physicality, pace had gone, couldn't finish, offered absolute nothing the entire time he was here.

Honourable mentions to Shaun Harrod and Andy Kirk, who while weren't terrible, really underwhelmed as marque signings after racking up goals elsewhere prior to joining.

JJ Hooper - when Rob Page brought him in, it showed how few connections he had in the game.

I wasn't disappointed with JJ Hooper - I knew he'd be sh1t!!

Mine also was Constantine. Was really excited when I saw we'd signed him. Really lazy as well. Really lazy!

This thread has the potential to outdo the Redev thread.

Oh absolutely about JJ Hooper - it was the disappointment that Rob Page had no-one to call on for a player.  JJ was his former Port Vale player, who wasn't getting in their side - so Rob Page had one connection = himself.

Apart from several of the current crop, no need to name them, how about Paul Wilkinson and Tom Youngs. Admittedly Wilkinson was at the end of his career, but was still abysmal and Youngs, top scorer with Cambridge twice, I think we paid a fair amount for, by our standards and a few other teams were after him. I think he got injured and was never the same player.

James Quinn, the Northern Ireland international, was pretty shocking. Never looked vaguely interested.

I know this is all subjective, but theres no way any of the current bunch, even the underperforming ones, live up to some of the ones we've had. Those Austrian kids, John Johnsons mate who was signed to keep him company, Seb Harris, Courtney Herbert, Freddy Hall, Alistair freaking Slowe. Even players like Harry Beautyman, Jake Robinson and Emanuel Sonupe who were not good enough to be pro players but not offensively bad like the others are probably worse than anyone on our books at the moment.

Paul McGregor...the mercenary from Forest..Actually made me angry watching him wear the town shirt

Paul McGregor also took the opportunity to slate Northampton afterwards.

I have less issue with those lacking a bit of talent but put the effort in than those with the opposite.

Paul Millar. Think his only contribution was an own goal at St James Park, Newcastle, 87 a minute after the Cobblers had equalised infront of 23,177!

Crooks- don't think he ever wanted to be here
Van Veen- as above
Constantine-spent force
Tom Youngs-dreadful
Harry Beautyman-Way above his level
Jake Robinson-As above

I think 2 goals from the three of them, mentioning no names, in half a season, suggests they possibly do.

Ian Henderson played 26 games for us without scoring. Look at his record since he left, perhaps this is a strikers graveyard.

As mentioned, Andy Kirk. I think the difference with him was he did put the effort in and that’s what made it all the more disappointing when it didn’t work out.

Tom Youngs who most useful contributions were as the reading champion.
And of course BAS.

Ikechi Anya - No idea how he had the career he did after leaving us. Every time I see him on TV playing I am in shock. To play for Watford and Derby and become an International (although only with Scotland  :P) is baffling

Title: Re: Your most disappointing Cobblers signing

He barely played for Derby and apparently was on £27k a week on a 4 year contract.

I quite liked Anya and was disappointed when we didn't sign him permanently.

I think most of the disappointing ones have already been mentioned, but there's also Sam Parkin who went on to have a good career but was hopeless for us. From the current crop I'd throw in Flores - supposedly a creative midfielder but has looked poor and disinterested on the rare occasions he's actually got onto the pitch.

He was never really going to play was he. Some dubious deal to pretend at being a footballer. That said he can claim to being part of the squad and an unused substitute at our win at Anfield.

Massive heeed.

Any "shot" from any team that hits the corner flag or lands out of the ground...

"You've been watching Aidy Mann, you've been watching, you've been watching, you've been watching Aidy Mann"

Cant really put poor Aidy in this category as he wasn't a signing as such but an outstanding product of our incredible youth academy in the 1980s (The Grosvenor Centre and Roadmender)

Now what was all that about?
7 clubs in 10 years, 9 games and 1 goal (all for the first team in US). 1 international cap
Seems to have done some great work through his foundation and even met Prince William, David Cameron and the Pope because of it.
You would have thoughts lots more would have been made of his time here (even if just about the foundation and community work) but the club never mentioned him and journalists didnt seem to know who he was.

Brilliant at talking up his CV  ;D
Quote
2013 — Signed to Northampton Town FC in the English League 2. Making him only 1 in 4 South Asians playing professional in the UK.

That right back who played 45 minutes in the late 80's and was never seen again - Chris O'Donnell. He didn't look anywhere near fit enough like we'd just dragged him off the racecourse.

But like others have said there are plenty more I could mention unfortunately.

Sent from Ipswich as well so you’d have thought he would had something about him. Must be the most famous 45 mins ever “played “. !

Chris Wilder only played 45 minutes before we sent him back, good job we didn't get rid of him as our manager when some wanted to.

James Quinn was a really bad one. Lazy and dis-interested half the time, then had the cheek of complaining about the club.
