Title: Former players
Post by: Bingers on December 27, 2022, 14:00:43 pm
Every now and again, I have a little Google of our ex-players, so see how they are getting on or what they did when they left us. It's usually the Wikipedia links that I then use to see what went on in their life. Sometimes things are a bit of a surprise.

Have you found out any surprising things about our ex-players?

Did you know that Gabor Gyepes has a really fit wife who used to be a Hungarian champion figure skater. Well worth a Google.

My latest delving into old threads to find old names has brought up Peter Gilbert. He played 30 times for us in 2009/10 and was described as Mr Dependable by Macc Cobbler when he resigned, with people seemingly happy that we had retained him, but then he never played for us again. What happened there? A couple of seasons at Southend then dropped off to non-league and his career finished.

No idea what his wife or significant other looks like.

Going back to the early days of this message board (2010) there is a telling off from the club with an invitation to Manny and Random to have a chat in the Headmaster's office. I wonder if they ever took up that offer?

Also, on those early pages, people (Big City Lights in particular - whatever happened to him?) were getting very excited at the prospect of going to Torquay for the first game of the season. Obviously not a shîthole, probably welcoming locals and no cost of living crisis back in 2010 - well pre Brexit and the Tories at that point hadn't crashed the economy by then.

Oh dear, I seem to have gone off topic on my own thread!

I loved going to Torquay. A lovely place and I have a soft spot for the club after how sporting they were the year we got promoted there. It's sad to see them sitting where they are at the moment.

Remember that argument well and pretty sure Marvo will have some views! Random (Ralph) had appeared on here certainly during season 21/22.  MaccCobbler is a personal friend of Ralph.

Random wasn't Ralph, was he? Or rather Ralap. He was a good bloke, had a few beers with him over time. Not seen him since a Hartlepool away on a Tuesday evening - only the hard core were there. And me.

Your right Ralph it was Ralap, for me he had a bit of a short fuse and we certainly did not get on. Saw him at Macclesfield on a cold windy day; he plays Golf and enjoys Running! Macclesfield Cobbler(Macc Cobbler)  is a great pal of his and mine too.

PS Macc Cobbler has not been seen on this board since Aug 2022 but have seen him and wife at Cobblers games this season! Always have a few words with them at games!

For what it's worth Phil Chard is on facebook, one of my favourite players

So back to the former players, today's delving into the past has brought up Craig Hinton. Despite being our captain, his career as a player pretty much finished when he left us, but he did move into coaching and is now involved with the FA as a coach educator.

So I was wondering, which of our former players has a) been most successful as a coach /manager and b) coached/ managed at the highest level?

John Gregory perhaps or Sean Dyche. Phil Neal was assistant to Graham Taylor with England, but probably best not go into that.

Paul Trollope did quite well as a manager/coach.

He was manager of Bristol Rovers for 5 years before becoming a coach at Birmingham City under Chris Hughton. He worked with Hughton a lot, at Norwich City, Brighton and most recently Nottingham Forest.

He was Head Coach of Cardiff for all of 12 games at the start of the 2015/16 season but he only won 2 of them so got sacked.
Interestingly, he was also a coach for the Welsh national side at the same time.

Chris Wilder was on loan here once. He did OK as a manager.
Chris Hargreaves was recently manager at Yeovil.
Ken Gillard coaches Arsenal U23.

Calderwood has also been teamed up with Hughton a few times.
Not the most successful but very long lived in management. 19 years almost unbroken and counting.

Shall we have a former managers thread? Perhaps the one who has managed at the highest level, i.e. The World Cup is perhaps one of our less well regarded ones.

You just know that it would swiftly turn into ex managers that bombed out, and slipped into obscurity.
Back on former players coaching, (shamelessly lifted from Wiki) Hawaii 50 himself currently manager at Bromley.

In spring of 2006 he was appointed assistant manager at Rushden & Diamonds but left the club after they were relegated from the Football League at the end of that season to join his former teammate Alan Pardew at West Ham United as a coach. When Pardew moved to Charlton Athletic, Woodman followed him in the summer of 2007 as goalkeeping coach. In December 2010 he linked up with Pardew again at Newcastle United as goalkeeping coach and on 31 July 2015, he joined Crystal Palace in the same position to work under Pardew again.

He’s right if a player puts on an NTFC shirt, that’s it - he is one of us. He would have received a small fee probably some form of insurance against injury - not from bombs or act of God!

Thanks for the picture; front row right. Wondered who that formidable looking player was. Lo and behold it was the great Tom Smalley best left back for us ever. Never saw him play but my father did who was a fine judge of players. Think he played for England too. Could have done with him last night. Said he was the hardest tackler he ever saw.

PS Like the shirts with 3 stripes - why we could not have these now instead of the wishy washy one’s currently in use?

Back in 2010, at the start of this message board, there was debate as to whether it might be Michael Jacob's year to crack on and make an impact, so I was thinking which of "our own" have gone on and had a good career.

Jacob's 450 matches up to Championship level are pretty decent and he should still add to that, but I think in my time supporting the Mighty Cobblers, I would go for Luke Chambers as having had the most successful career. Nearly ever present most seasons at only 4 clubs, have given him 850 appearances, mostly at Championship level and still playing at 37. That is a good career.

In my time;

Eddie McGoldrick
Trevor Morley
David Gilbert
Keith Mcpherson
Phil Neal
Steve Howard

Against us I always remember David Platt looked outstanding for Crewe when we were romping the Division 4 title.

Marlon Beresford was an outstanding Goalkeeper when on loan (though no better than Liam Roberts last season).

I guess it depends what you mean by "our own".

Another cut and paste job for the record. Philip George Neal (born 20 February 1951) is an English retired footballer who played for Northampton Town, Liverpool and Bolton Wanderers as a full back. He is one of the most successful English players of all time, having won seven First Divisions, four League Cups, five FA Charity Shields, four European Cups, one UEFA Cup and one UEFA Super Cup during his eleven years at Liverpool. Neal also had a long career with the England national team, winning 50 caps and playing in the 1982 World Cup.

Saw him play for us a lot, he was good. Only time I sat in a seat at the County Ground was for the Dave Bowen testimonial where we played against Liverpool. A game set up as part of the deal that took “Zico” to Anfield.

Obviously Ivan has got great potential, I don't think he is going to be the most successful in terms of appearances, but for goals scored, he could be the one, as long as he doesn't do anything stupid to mess up his career.
