I feel a bit sorry for AVB (not that sorry, given how much he'll get paid off, but you know...). He inherited an ageing but highly influential core set of players there that previous managers have also stated hold too much sway behind the scenes. AVB's problem was that he inherited them at a time when they don't necessarily warrant a place in the team every week so they were against him almost from the off when they were left out. It's difficult in any walk of life to manage a team containing a petulant barrack-room-lawyer type who keeps stirring everyone up. Having two or three of them must make things next to impossible.

It strikes me as a very unhealthy situation and I have a feeling they might struggle under any manager until there is a proper changing of the guard in the playing staff.

He's better off out of it.
