Having said that, getting promoted and scoring three would have been the icing on the cake. Pesky 1 - 0 promotion securing victories.

 Grin

Just think if JB had left him out more often we'd have won the league and be well on our way to a double promotion.   Tongue
2  General Category / General Chat / Re: Politics on: February 18, 2024, 14:52:11 pm
50 matches, 25 votes in each, so roughly 1250 votes in total? I wouldn't call that a small collection of data.

You know I choose to tell people I did that. I could have kept quiet and continued to affect the result. That was never my intention. It's the flawed system.

Is 25 votes a week a large amount oif data or small?  Because that's the data you were directly affecting.  I mean you literally said in your previous post "if more people had voted" you would not have been able to affect the outcome.

I point all this out because volume of data and variables matter when it comes to drawing conclusions from data.  You clearly understand this as you have pointed it out yourself.  If the data is small, relitively, a single variable like yourself can affect it.  As you proved.  Now apply that logic to some of your other uses of data on this site from which you form your opinion.

As for the vote and your conduct...my opinion for what it's worth...just seemed a bit childish to be honest.  I mean you realise you could have just told the vote organiser of the issue without the need to actually do it?
3  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Leonard and Bowie on: February 18, 2024, 14:04:28 pm
Leonard is an outstanding player who is only going to get better.  His versatility in midfield and general fitness has been a godsend to this lcub over the last two years.  I hope he gets a chance in the Prem in the not too distant future.

Difficult to know what the future holds for Bowie.  Would be a shame if he goes back to Scotland as I think that would be waste of his talent.

Sadly, as always, if he's as good as we think he is there will be someone who offers him more than we can.

Massive respect for both players though and a great example of how the loan system, when done well, can benefit all parties.  I reckon all sides have got loads out of their time here.
4  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Injury Updates.... on: February 18, 2024, 13:54:32 pm
He used to infuriate me with his aimless shoot on sight and his mostly useless delivery from wide, both invariably getting blocked by the nearest defender.
I think much of his improved positional play in front of goal can be attributed to Rico but his attempts at goal just seem to have got a lot better and I'm not sure that can be attributed to anyone other than the man himself.
Sure he plays more on confidence than most and so the changes to his personal life will have benefitted his game.

Completely agree.  His finishing is light years above what it was.  You only have to look back on some of his goals this season and he has at times made hard finishes look easy.

I'm certainly glad he was in the side against Tranmere last season.

It's obviously a good thing the side isn't a one man team and that we can play well without him.  I just struggle to understand why anyone would be trying to find a way to get a 20 goal a season striker out of the side.  I think the fact JB picks him every time he's available probably says it all.
5  General Category / General Chat / Re: Politics on: February 18, 2024, 13:39:12 pm
Well even there it started as an experiment, I wasn't trying to get any individual the prize, just noticed how easy it was to affect the result of any given match. The point is, if more people voted or points were only awarded to the player who got the most votes each game, it would be impossible to influence the outcome. I've pointed that out yet it's still being done in the old way and there are still very few people vote each week. In truth it's not a big deal and I don't vote any more.

So again a prime example of how a single variable (you) can affect the outcome of a small collection of data.
6  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Bristol Rovers (h) on: February 18, 2024, 13:31:09 pm
I understand what you are saying but there has to be the "stand out" reason, along with the variables. If you had a run of say 9 matches in which you conceded 18 goals, then brought in a new signing, goalkeeper, centre- half, etc and then didn't concede a goal in the next 9 matches, it would be churlish not to claim the new signing was the major reason for the upturn in form. You couldn't ever prove it but you know it would be true.

Your example has perfectly summed up the problem with the way you are using the data regarding Hoskins.  In your example above you use 9 games either way, a balanced judgement.  With Hoskins you are using a very small subset 13 out of 146 games. So 13 vs 133.

As people have pointed out many times volume of data and the associated variables matter when drawing any conclusions.  As Worthless pointed out there are too many other variables that will only be evened out if the data comparison is large enough and more even in comparison.  It's not your fault that data doesn't exist.

Think about this.  If we follow your logic of how much better the team is without Hoskins statiscally, Brady could have left him out all season and we would likely win promotion?  Do you actually believe that?
7  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Injury Updates.... on: February 16, 2024, 16:37:29 pm
I agree that Sowerby is the big miss.  Just makes things tick in the middle.  Alongside this it's no coincidence we looked better when Leonard played further forward.  Getting his quality up into the danger areas was massive for us and the sooner we can do it again the better.

As for Hoskins....only at the Cobblers would you finally unearth a 20 goal a season striker of his quality and some would argue we are better without him.

The natural warming and cooling of the earth itís been happening for millennia.
https://climate.nasa.gov/news/2948/milankovitch-orbital-cycles-and-their-role-in-earths-climate/

https://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/

Scientists have had evidence for some time there is a natural warming and cooling.  It's the cause which is being debated in the article you link not whether it's true.

Man made global warming is something different entirely as per the article above from the same website you used.  It's about the speed and levels on top of the norm that people should be concerned about.  Of course it will be the same as every other major political challenge where those in power will only wake up when it's too late and they have to deal with the consequences.

P.S.  Can you provide a link for the original article you mention in your first post.
9  General Category / General Chat / Re: War on: February 16, 2024, 16:16:17 pm

Yet again only read a headline not the article?

Why are you providing evidence contrary to the point you are trying to make?

This case was pretty close to a good friend.

https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2024/jan/22/open-university-academic-wins-tribunal-case-over-gender-critical-views

The OU is a Ďstrangeí place, stuck in the dark ages in many respects and this caused a stir.

Views on women with a penis?

I listened to an interview, with the professor that won this tribunal case, on the radio the other day.

Seems to me the OU treated her very poorly and in general Uni's have a growing problem with free speech and how to handle it.  My view has always been that as long as comments being made are legal then the way to challenge is by listening and offering different voew points.  Simply shutting down opposing views does more damage than good.

My only criticism of the professor is why they called their group "Gender Critical Research Network".  The term "Gender Critical" is used by some to mean anti Trans which they would well know.  Also comes across as overly negative.  I'm assuming most of those that were critical just made an assumption based on the name and it gathered pace.

As for trans gender.  I think BOTN summed it up really well.  One of my best friends transitioned about six years ago.  Absolutely the best thing they ever did for themselves.  A stressfull, time consuming and difficult process though.  It's a shame, much like every subject, that the press and some members of the public only seem interested in the extreme stories that make up a tiny fraction of what is happening in the real world.
11  General Category / General Chat / Re: Politics on: February 16, 2024, 13:28:11 pm

See if you can spot the difference between the way Labour handled these situations vs how long some of the tory MPs hung on with the help of their cronies.  The Government literally ignored reports and tried to change the rules to protect some of their own rather than doing what was right.

I know what I would prefer.
12  General Category / General Chat / Re: Politics on: February 16, 2024, 13:21:51 pm
North Northamptonshire Council is a Conservative lead council trying to find solutions to problems caused by a Conservative Governments policies. Truly disgusting? Shocked

Was thinking the exact same thing.   Grin Grin

I mean the Tories have been the primary governing party since 2010!  At what stage do they accept their responsbility?
13  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Redevelopment Closer Than Ever? on: February 06, 2024, 15:10:54 pm
I find this thread interesting today.  I've read three lengthy posts from BOTN, Dav and Peter and apart from the Franklins Gardens stuff I just find myself nodding along in agreement to everything they have said.

Here are 3 clearly intelligent individuals that I don't believe I have any connection with outside this board who having heard all the evidence over the years have come to the same conclusion as I have about the owners and redevelopment.  I've also read many others over the years that clearly feel the same way.

I don't believe any of us, despite various accusations over the years, have any relationship with the owners or club beyond being simply supporters of NTFC.

Despite this there is a persistent minority that tell us we are sheep and that we are wrong in every way about the owners.  All I've ever asked is for someone to prove why I'm wrong if I really am.  Change my mind but do it with evidence.

I've also always found it strange that in my dealings, with all sides of the debate, that the ones that tell me I'm wrong find it the hardest to demonstrate why and conduct themelves so poorly.
14  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Jon Brady, the future on: February 06, 2024, 13:27:45 pm
Iíve actually heard quite the opposite.

That would suprise me greatly.  I have no deep insight other than having watched him at work a couple of times and the obvious evidence i.e. the clear bond the squad has and the success the squad has achieved to suggest otherwise.

I'm completely biased though and love the guy so on this occasion I don't have any enthusiasm to ask you for more info.
15  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The Ten League Games Mark. on: February 06, 2024, 13:19:11 pm
Who's comparing? As always I just give you the facts.

By the way, Wilson took over a losing side and didn't have the benefit of a summer to build his own team.

In fact, as you would expect the majority of managers took over after the previous manager failed. That's the nature of the process. Only those that followed Calderwood & Wilder can be considered exceptions.

You've presented a set of comparative data in a league table ranking the managers first ten game record against each other.  Nobody had a problem with that but it is a comparison.

All Manny pointed out and I agreed with is this specific set of data is difficult to draw anything directly from because it can't reflect the many external variables that will have contributed to it.

Take one example.  Phil Chard and Martin Wilkinson.  Similarly bad records according to the data alone.  We know outside of the data one managed at a time we had the largest playing budget probably in our history and the other managed during administration and had to play half the youth team.

I like your stats posts as they bring up interesting talking points.  I personally just struggle to draw much from this set of data for the reasons I said.  No biggy.
16  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The Ten League Games Mark. on: February 05, 2024, 18:59:29 pm
Itís never that black and white though is it Marvo.
Itís a bit like AI the more points of data you give it the better it is, example Brady took over a loosing side put together by Curle in L1 whereas some of the others in your list were in lower divisions and had a summer to plan etc.

Completely agree.  Too many variables to make this a worthwhile comparison in my opinion.
17  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: End of season predictions. on: February 05, 2024, 18:57:46 pm
As we had done a finishing league position at the start of the season my objective when starting this thread was to speculate on our final points total. Sorry if I did make that clear.

I went with position personally as IMO it's a bit more meaningful than points.
18  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Jon Brady, the future on: February 05, 2024, 18:56:37 pm
I bet heís had a bollŲcking today from KT, in no uncertain terms.

 Grin

I don't think so.  A polite reminder of the nice new contract he has just been given would probably suffice.

I think KT is intelligent enough to understand the frustration being felt.
19  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Redevelopment Closer Than Ever? on: February 05, 2024, 18:50:33 pm
Heís told you why it misleads fans, KT says he doesnít take a salary which is true but he does take expenses instead, but didnít mention the expenses. FFS I donít expect too much from you but surely you can see what Dustin is getting at?
Are you still wearing those bad shoes?

Least suprising reply of the day.  I can completely see the point he was making...very badly.  I question the logic of mimicking the very behaviour he criticises so much.  Don't forget this is your "one true voice of the fans".  Grin

"I know what will show KT up for the liar he is.  I'll lie to everyone myself!  That will show him."   Grin

Take a breath and think about who you are defending here.  You only have the truth now cause I called him out on his bullsh1t.

So let me get this straight.  Random has chosen to knowingly mislead fans (and has been doing so for years).  But when I call him out and he admits it I'm the bad guy?

As for shoes comment, I have no idea what that means.
20  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: End of season predictions. on: February 05, 2024, 15:55:36 pm
For me it depends completely on if the injury situation improves.

If it does I reckon 10th if it doesn't 18th.
