The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: We'll score again

It's clear what we need and has been for ages - to do it will need a big spend in the Jan window plus a massive clear-out of dead wood. If it doesn't happen we're back down in the clag and that'll be even more costly than not sorting the problems asap. Plus - Jimmy's looking punch-drunk and clueless.

His comments on-air after today's game shocked me. He felt we played well! We were toothless against one of the worst sides in our division, yet as a one-time star goal-scorer at the highest levels he is unable to see how useless we are at a) providing chances and b) sticking the ball in the net. We have a large but mediocre squad. I want to be hearing how he wishes to turn this mess around. He's either blind as a bat OR diplomatically trying to protect his players in case he drags their confidence even lower. We need to act very significantly in the next transfer window or we're stuffed.

Here I go again - we need two new strikers and some winglike new players who can deliver the ball for them. It's been obvious for so long that the club is suicidal by not addressing it. We have a massive squad of relative mediocrity for this level.

It's simple. We need some players who can get in killer crosses, then a couple of pacey strikers to convert the chances. If that sounds expensive then bear in mind it's nowhere near as expensive as dropping back to League 2. Hasselbaink may as well get fit, register, and play himself upfront if he won't take a chance on our young strikers who are out on loan.

Actually Long is a half decent striker, he missed (it was a bad miss) one chance yesterday can't remember him having any others?, the problem is we're not creating anything for him! Two wingers in Jan maybe?
Correct - he's HALF decent!

We looked a fitter and more determined side than I've seen so far this season...we backed each other up well in all departments, won the ball decisively, and did a lot of good with it. No hoof and hope today!

You’re missing the point somewhat with that comment…
The reason people object to Premier League u21’s being allowed in this competition has nothing to do with whether or not they might win it! It is the fact that these ‘top’ clubs have been trying for years to expand our league to include their ‘reserve’ teams. They want a League 4 made up of us lower league clubs and their 2nd 11. If ever they get their way the knock-on effect will be a disaster for lower league clubs. Firstly, their squads are so large that their 2nd 11 would effectively be a premiership team and in a few seasons would rise to the summit of the championship (remember, there would be no need for them to loan players out to the likes of us anymore). Naturally, rules would be brought in that do not allow them to be promoted to the premiership and eventually they would virtually shut the door to promotion to/from the premier league for all of us (which is what this is all about).
They’ve tried various methods to get this ball rolling such as league expansion, feeder clubs, even increased sponsorship revenue but to date the 72 league chairmen have voted against every suggestion – bar this.
This is just the thin end of the wedge. If this competition is seen to be a success then it is just a matter of time before they propose the next level. This is how all unpopular propositions begin in this game – start with an insignificant competition and once it’s established, move on to the next. I’m hoping for more record low attendances. That’s not saying I don’t want us to win – I do. In fact I’d like us to go all the way. However, I would want both sets of supporters to boycott the final and have it played in an empty Wembley stadium…

I don't mean this in any nasty way but it's totally pointless from my perspective - my grandparents and other much-loved relatives followed the Cobblers - the team that represents my community. There'd be no reason to look elsewhere. If our club folded up I'd just do something else with my time and money.

With post-match out-of-touch views like that he'll become Sacklebaink by January and we'll once again be up the creek with no paddle. First thing is to find two pacy forwards. We have two young ones out on loan, stick 'em in there, it can't be any worse. The pace of Waters and Hoskins was ok today but they were generally fed rubbish ball. I'd keep them in there too.

Same size ball, same size goal. I don't subscribe to 'protecting' youngsters from the rigours of League One when the seniors already there have been unable to score a goal of their own in open play for so long that more of the same just shows suicidal tendencies.

Other than the fact we're all agreed that we are not scoring goals and that it needs addressing mighty soon, recent comments on here have no common agreement that I can work out. Yes, everyone has their own idea who should be in the matchday squad, or their own version of the formation to which we should play - but real solutions are missing. The manner of playing and the quality of squad are both currently to be found wanting - a matter of fact and not of opinion and borne out by statistics. What's needed is a big public statement of intent from the club, backed by manager, chairman, Chinese co-owners etc. on how this mess is to be addressed before it's too late to recover. Trundling along is no plan.
