81  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Welcome Tyreece Simpson on: July 27, 2023, 08:24:19 am
Welcome aboard Tyreece! Delighted that he has come on board as he certainly provides a level of physicality that we do not currently possess in the number 9 spot. That being said I think a few fans will see his massive frame and expect him to be a target man of sorts. He is not that. He wants the ball on the half turn, to get in behind players and can roll defenders really well with his size, good turn of pace for a big man also. That being said hes useless in the air (thats not me being down on our signings, its an absolute fact).

I imagine as has been the case in many games in previous years we will be strong from set pieces and look to hit a lot of teams on the counter attack. Simpson definitely adds to that strength.

Players that have done very well at L2 level (he was on course for 15-20 goals when at Swindon) are ideal signings for us, especially in this age range. Its a shame its only a loan but survival needs to be our priority and proving that we can look after parents clubs players and develop them is not a bad thing at all.

Good to have him at Sixfields and hopefully is one of a few more quality additions.

Rightly so 🔥 best player we faced last season easily.

Completely agree, he was absolutely electric. Velcro first touch and just glided past our players seemingly.

I would feel far far more confident that a front 3 of Olaigbe, Simpson and Hoskins would be able to keep us afloat next season that say Hoskins Bowie and Appere.
83  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Summer Transfer Window 2023 on: July 25, 2023, 15:36:44 pm
Agree, hopefully after the shambles of blind signing known crocks such as Nuttall & Hylton, the club have learnt it's not worth cutting corners on medicals...

Simpson would be exactly the signing we've desperately needed for some time...

Every team needs a proper strong target man/hold up player who can bring others into play ala Bayo

Not sure he is that... this is what a Swindon had to say on Simpson, obviously he could have developed since then although had limited game time:
"Took a while to get going - bit of a cows arse/banjo scenario. He’ll still miss a few but he’s strong and quick. Don’t expect him to hold the ball up though. Haven’t looked, but I don’t think he’s played much since leaving us. You’re right, he’s useless in the air.

I’d have him back in a heartbeat."

I do love these days. A little bit of excitement to spice up what otherwise be a pretty uninteresting friendly, even though Simpson wouldnt play in it even if it comes through today. Can he win anything in the air?

It does feel like having three or four slavering dogs at the door, trying to burst through it in excitement, waiting for their master to return every time ntfclad posts though.

I dont have access to the same data set I used to have, need to renew my subscription. But from memory his aerial ability was startlingly poor for a man with his physical gifts. Much more someone who can use his pace to get in behind and help roll defenders.
85  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Summer Transfer Window 2023 on: July 17, 2023, 09:41:42 am
With plenty of time still to be had until the window closes there is still plenty of opportunity to bring players in. However my concern as is many's is that our biggest area of need is still largely yet to be addressed which is the forward areas. Despite a period last season where we were the top scorers I dont think we have found goals easy to come by during JB's tenure, we have been built from the back and been defensively resolute with a great team ethic.

The concern is that as you get into L1 you need that extra quality (obviously). I look an Monthe and Brough and i saw good L2 players / bottom end L1 players. Brady talks about improving players and getting a certain set of physical attributes when he signs new players. I see their attributes, they are units, very physically capable but perhaps lacking in terms of overall quality. To me these signings are not really an upgrade on what we had massively. They offer different skill-sets, but are still the same ish level to what already existed in the squad.

I think players the age of Sherring, Fox etc are the profile of players which are more exciting. Players who's peak of their careers is yet to arrive and who can be improved and then potentially sold on later down the line. Effort, team spirit and endeavour will earn us a certain amount of points, but if we get on a real set of bad patch that becomes far harder to continue than when we are winning regularly.

I dont expect us to threaten mid table by the end of the season. This isnt me attempting to be super negative, its just where I think we are at, which is a team that should hopefully finish around 18th. I think we are going to look to play a back 3/5, be hard to break down and then look to take one of the limited opportunities that we create. But the signings so far to me emphasise what Marvo has mentioned, we are a good L2 side and a poor L1 side. That to me is not going to change based on the current additions.

I think we need another CM, 2 wingers and 2 forwards (not sure we will get all those). But at least 3 of those need to be better than what we have, not the same level IMO. Just my two cents worth.

From a picture posted by the sports camp the team are using it appears Josh Harrop is still training with us. Whether that is just to help build up his fitness or we will take a chance on a short length deal i dont know.
87  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Welcome back Kieron Bowie on: July 04, 2023, 13:06:05 pm
Can you recall someone halfway through a season long loan, just to send him out on loan elsewhere? I thought that only applied to an injury crisis.

Happened with Kion Etete, got recalled and then loaned to Cheltenham in L1.
88  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Summer Transfer Window 2023 on: July 03, 2023, 14:25:07 pm
I am glad to have Bowie back. He offers us some flexibility in that he can play up top or out wide. That being said I think his numbers were a little disappointing considering his clear talent and total game time.

That being said it was his first season in English football so there is a period of adaptation required. To me Bowie is currently at the same level of us, a good L2 Player / lower end L1 player. With his age he can hopefully continue to progress and perform better than that for us. I think he is capable of getting more goals in a more expansive team but had to rely on relative scraps last season at times, toiling a lot without a huge amount of quality balls coming his way.

As I said though, i think he offers us a good option and I am glad to have him back. He has a real physicality for someone his age. Would still want at least another 2 forward players, ideally with some pace.
89  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Summer Transfer Window 2023 on: June 30, 2023, 10:31:41 am
Galbraith and Agyei both good signings for Orient. Would have been delighted with either or both here.

Still not worried about incomings, its still June! That being said, my expectations for this season are to fight against relegation and realistically to finish around 15-20th (subject to change depending on the signings).

Team spirit and organization will take you to a certain point but we do have to bridge some of the gap in this league with additional quality. Hopefully an additional 4 forward thinking players will still come in.
90  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Summer Transfer Window 2023 on: June 22, 2023, 13:35:13 pm
Would be delighted if Koiki stays. It means that we have two very contrasting options at LB with him and Brough. Koiki clearly has room for improvement at both ends of the pitch as he has not really chipped in with as many assists as one would think considering his attacking style, his defending is more so down to lapses of concentration / lack of awareness which hopefully can be improved on. One on one defending he was number 1 in the league last season at LB.

Hopefully we can get him on a 2 year deal. Brady always talks about signing people when they still have room for improvement, Koiki definitely fits the bill.

I know Brough can play on the left of 3 CB's but I would say Haynes is probably surplus to requirements now.
91  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Summer Transfer Window 2023 on: June 16, 2023, 09:45:33 am
Seeing as Brady talks about the data backing up the scouting that leads them to sign a player I thought I would do the same (on the most basic of levels). For those that hate this sort of stuff please feel free to avert your eyes. Obviously different styles of play between different teams mean the numbers are to be taken with a grain of salt, but I cannot be bothered to make the necessary amendments to attempt to balance it all. One thing to mention only players that played at least 1000 minutes are included.

First things first, hes massive for a LB. Of all the LB's that played in L1 and L2 no one is taller than our man Patrick. Very much fits the mould of athletic players that Brady consistently talks about. He also racks up a fair few cards in comparison to others in the same position 8 yellows (2nd most) and ranked 10th for fouls per game. Clearly he is a different profile to what we had at LB with Haynes and Koiki.

Second thing, hes available. Unlike the rest of our left backs and defence in general last season Brough appears to be Iron Man. He averaged well over 4000 minutes a season at Barrow. They say the best ability is availability and he definitely is that. Brough ranked 6th last season in league minutes out of L1 & 2 LB's.

He is also very competent in the air, ranking 9th out of 49 as the best at winning headers defensively out of L1 and L2 LB's, many of those ahead of him slotted into a back 3 also so Brough is probably better than 9th tbh. With that you do lose a bit in the passing. Brough appeared to be a little more expansive in his passing, he passed forward more than the rest of our LB's, but his overall accuracy was not great. Brough comes out 44th out of 49 in terms of passing accuracy. But you cannot always just play safe, Brough ranks 10th in terms of chances created and 7th in crosses into the box.

There a million more metrics but I wont bore you with the more detailed ones. Overall report, solid yet unspectacular. I think we were clearly targeted at LB at times last season, be that either Koiki or Haynes being suspect defensively. Brough is going to make us more compact defensively which is something I think we clearly needed. Brady and Co has clearly developed a defensively resolute team in their tenure and I think Brough clearly fits into that. We are not going to bang in goals for fun this season, we havnt done been prolific under Brady. But we are defensively solid and Brough helps with that. He is also rarely injured and Barrow fans complimented his consistent performances. Its a very us signing, as someone mentioned before.
92  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Summer Transfer Window 2023 on: June 13, 2023, 13:20:58 pm
Correct
Which is why both will probably go on loan .
If we are starting in division 1 with this type of player we will be down before the Christmas decorations .
We need League 1 quality players to stand a chance .

Understand your thoughts but I cant see it happening with Lintott personally. He featured in nearly 40 games last season and improved as the season went on. Just because he is not a certain starter does not mean he cannot deputise throughout the season when needed. He is a similar profile to Hondermarck in my eyes, a young player that wont feature each week, but capable of featuring for a lower midtable L1 side when needed with plenty of room to improve. I dont understand why we would want to sign another back up RB which is what we would be doing as McGowan is clearly a Brady favourite.
93  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Summer Transfer Window 2023 on: June 13, 2023, 10:27:23 am
i will be very surprised if Dyche doesn’t get loaned out , along with Lintott .

Why do think we would loan out Lintott? Featured heavily and did consistently well, plus McGowan has shown that he picks up injuries with regularity. I would be really surprised if he is loaned out and hope he features in our squad regularly.
94  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Summer Transfer Window 2023 on: June 13, 2023, 10:13:57 am
The majority of centre backs lack pace including Guthrie who we would not want to be without, Magloire is an exception but he will miss the bulk of next season. Horsfall lacked pace and on more than 1 occasion the season before last we were caught out when opponents slipped a through ball between Horsfall and Guthrie for an attacker to run on to. I don't think a lack of pace should deter Dyche from having a good career.
Charlie Goode wasn't the quickest but we still got £1m+ for him and Harry Maguire has had a good career but again is not particularly quick.

A more than fair point, as you say its not common for CB's to be rapid. That being said I thought that Dyche's lack of mobility was quite obvious at times and it meant he got caught out. But he is still extremely inexperienced so perhaps its just a lack of reading the game due to this. I just think he may struggle at L1 level but here is hoping I am wrong.
95  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Summer Transfer Window 2023 on: June 13, 2023, 08:27:36 am
Just for food for thought, but McWilliams hadn't re-signed by this time last year. So if we had pulled his contract at this point out at frustration, then we wouldn't have had him last season.

That is a good point. We are fortunate that none of the players whom we are waiting on are as important as McWilliams was/is. Koiki is definitely someone who has room for improvement still but did not excel last season when he was fit. King looked a dependable back up but imagine he will be off seeking a no1 spot. Dyche improved but still looked a bit ropey at times (understandably) due to his lack of experience. I think his lack of pace may hinder his ability to play much higher up the leagues.

All in all if none of them sign we are not massively impacted imo.
96  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Summer Transfer Window 2023 on: June 12, 2023, 21:57:46 pm
No doubt Jonny Williams has quality on the ball but he has had major injury issues throughout his career. Apparently Bradford have offered him a 3 year deal which is certainly a risk considering his past injury record.
97  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Summer Transfer Window 2023 on: June 01, 2023, 14:33:25 pm
With the lack of activity and rumours so early in the window we are limited to wishful thinking. Carlos Mendes-Gomes is out of contract (I believe at Luton). With their promotion I would assume he is unlikely to feature for them a division higher.

Had an outstanding season at L2 a few years back for Morecambe and did well (1 goal in 3) in his stop start campaign for Fleetwood last season. No doubt he will have a ton of suitors who can pay more, but that sort of player would be ideal for us. Got a move up the divisions, has yet to work for him so needs to resettle, can play across the front line and gets you goals.
98  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Iconic Cobblers goals... on: May 25, 2023, 11:05:04 am
Two that stand out for me were the Ricky Holmes winner against Luton that took us top of the league. Then later that season his winner at Stevenage where Wilder basically said yeah we are now going up. Very clearly remember both, my mindset and everything about it. Two screamers also on his left foot!
99  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Summer Transfer Window 2023 on: May 24, 2023, 18:07:07 pm
Load of s***e

Yeah thats not a shock, I would eat my face if he went to a championship club on the back of last season.

I am not someone who normally has any sort of knowledge on transfers but spoke to someone who is friends with Jacobs today. Mentioned to me that he does indeed want to come back and is willing to take a sizeable pay cut to be in the area with his family. Was pretty surprised at the amount he is on at Pompey, but then on the back of their attendances I guess its normal for them.
100  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Summer Transfer Window 2023 on: May 23, 2023, 15:30:27 pm
Jordan Graham is being released by Birmingham. 28 years old wide man, last time he was at this level (3 seasons ago) he got 13 goals and 7 assists for Gillingham as a right winger. Been played as a fullback by Birmingham since, featuring semi regularly. Not sure if he is above our station but would be a good signing for a League 1 side.
