The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Wycombe (a) Sat. 16th March

As a Cobblers fan of nearly half a century who has lived through the perpetual 3rd/4th tier yoyo, I can't help thinking we are now at 5 or so season, local maximum on the league position 'curve'. It's always possible that a capacity increase and/or fresh investment could still make this a point of inflexion.

In my opinion, the pressure is all on Posh tomorrow night. Who knows what will happen but a relaxed Cobblers might just be able pull another memorable performance out of the bag. Would be nice to see Sammo celebrating a late winner in front of the home fans as he did 23 odd years ago...

I think it's unlikely we'll be able to retain the services of Leonard and Bowie next season. Surely their parent clubs will want to test them at Championship level? Can we replace such pivotal members of the team? If history is anything to go by its always been a struggle. That's my concern for next season.

Any news on capacity after East Stand Redevelopment? ~7.5K is pretty embarrassing and wholly inadequate for the Cobblers. Gates like those of Lincoln, Oxford and Exeter are achievable, if only we had extra seats!!!

Always look forward to this fixture - only a couple of miles from my home. And what a great win for the Cobblers ! Richly deserved, especially as I'm still puzzling over the penalty that wasnt given. The lino had a clear view.

We must have a 10-15K capacity after redevelopment. Anything less is a nonsense and actually a retrograde step for the club. Better to leave the East stand unfinished than stick with the same paltry capacity.

Great, and thoroughly deserved result for the boys today - a young team really starting to click.
As I've said here before though, it is an enduring sadness that the clubs ambition will be forever gated by the paltry ground capacity.
Unless a way is found to increase seats and/or standing up to say 15,000, in the long run we will forever be a L1/L2 yoyo club at best - not really good enough for a town like Northampton.

Great result for the boys today. However it's an enduring sadness that we have no ambition to host a proper crowd for such occasions. Approximatemately 8000 max just isn't enough for regular league one football these days, especially when so many big clubs are in the third tier.

We know that Orient are running at a loss of £2 - £3million per annum.its their business model. Do you think we should follow that strategic plan?
Running at a huge loss isn't a business model. It's something else entirely. You just have to look what happens when the Dale Vince's of this world lose interest.

Squad size is a bit of a silly argument. It's like saying Luton have a bigger squad than Man City so I expect them to do well in the Premiership next season. It's about quality not size and as Leonard and Bowie were both here last season, Simpson apart, we're pretty much beginning our League 1 campaign with the side that got promoted on the final day of the season in League 2. If the target is 20th, that may be enough.
I like to think there are parallels with Nottingham Forest's 76/77 season in the old 2nd division. They only squeaked promotion in 3rd place thanks to Bolton's defeat on the last day of the season. They then signed just 3 players in the close season and that was 'enough' !

I’ll ask the same question that I have been regularly asking. Given our record signing was Josh Low in 03/04 at 200k, next was Steve Howard at 175k in 98/99, and in third was Andy Kirk at 165k in 04/05, what would be a reasonable amount of “cash to splash”. Dependant on your answer who would you splash it on and are they in all honesty likely to be available for that amount? I’m asking because people seem somewhat reluctant to fill in the gaps regarding their reasoning, hopefully it will be different on this occasion?
We should compete only with teams of a similar stature ( budget ) right now, so historic figures aren't really of any relevance - competing with the likes of Derby on transfer fees etc is a non-starter. Take the average fee paid by similar teams for L1 calibre strikers right now, and that's where we are at. Where the cost can be mitigated a little is in the persuasiveness of Brady, Calderwood and Thomas. That's where they demonstrate their value ( or otherwise ). Of course there is no reason why we should splash any cash - with the continuity from last season we'll probably have enough to stay up with a couple of decent loans.

My prediction is that the Cobblers will survive comfortably in League One next season even without any major signings. Continuity and momentum are more important than anything else and we have them both. We also had them under Ian Atkins in 97-98 after the playoff win against Swansea the previous season. We didn't add any expensive signings and still made the playoffs again that year with a squad that clearly overachieved. Whether we can remain in League One much beyond that is another question.
