Having seen the team I am not optimistic. Would prefer Waters to Hoskins and am not keen on having VanVeen up front with Williams. Would rather have an extra midfielder playing - Foley - in away games.

I’m no fan of Hoskins playing on the wing but if it’s a choice between him and Waters for that role I think Hoskins just shades it. I would be giving Waters a chance upfront until Morais is fit personally but I ain’t Austin.

Wonder what the issue is with Morias? Seems there's something we're not being told.

I think it’s just Austin being cautious, he wouldn’t have played 45 in the week if he had a problem.

I’d have thought having him on the bench with a view to giving him 10 minutes would have been the plan. I guess the might have thought it might be better to do that when there isn’t such a long journey involved.

Crooks proved at Walsall, that he he can play out wide, and had their full back in his pocket. The only problem with this, is that, with Powell on the other side, the keepers distribution inevitably was aimed towards Crooks, as Powell absolutely cannot/will not head a ball. This is predictable game play, which can very quickly be detected by the opposition. And we all know that Hoskins tries his hardest, but hes not going to beat a taller dude in the air. We need a proper wide man as a matter of some urgency. Someone that can accept the ball to his head, or feet, beat his man, and whip in a cross. Then you might see KVV show his true colours.
IMO Crooks is better in the centre of the park. Play people in their correct position, and you may get results.

I think you just need a couple of targets for standard keeper distribution, Crooks wide would be one like you, JJOT and Williams would be the other two, the three of them just need to clever with their positioning. Powell is fine for quick ball to chest / feet or into space and we can also mix it by going shorter.

Don’t disagree with you last sentence but I think the problem we’ve had for a couple of years is that our best players simply don’t fit into a logical formation. Either the manager has to make a brave call and leave one out or someone plays out of position. This year I would think nearly everyone would want JJOT, Crooks and McWilliams but I also think Williams and Morais would be in. 3 midfielders and 2 strikers would say 532 but as with when JED tried it we don’t really have wing backs. It’s going to take a while to get this squad balanced in the meantime something will be a compromise

Powell can apparently play both wings, so when fit, do you think Facey could play on the right wing? He appears to be a defender that can play right wingback instead of just right back and seems good going forward. Maybe that's the way we balance it out.

Yup I think Powell will play left side, probably with Hoskins right. If everyone was fit I wouldn’t be adverse to Crooks taking one of the wide midfield roles but being given a bit of a license to roam, that’s where I think he’s had his best games for us. That way we have 1 wide player to stretch the pitch, hug the line and one adding an extra body centrally and hopefully being hard to pick up.

I wouldn’t play Facey wide personally, I don’t see him as someone who beats a man or is particularly attack minded. He did ok at wing back but I think he made less of an attacking impression than Bunney, his goal aside of course.

I'm completely guessing but when everyone is fit I think DA will have Williams and Morais up front together so it makes sense to me that we play in that shape now.

If it was me picking the team this weekend I would be tempted to give Waters a run alongside Williams and maybe look to bring Morais on for the last 20 or so to ease him in. But it's not up to me so I suspect he will either go with Hoskins up front and Bridge wide right or back to how we started last week with JJOT behind Williams with Foley or Shaun "Lazarus" McWilliams in midfield. This probably means Hoskins on the wing again.

At the moment only 4 seat cabs available. It's scuppering the move for all of them at present. I'll let you know if I hear any more.

Thanks, this is gripping stuff.

Am I right in thinking that non-English teams have a later deadline?
If so could KvV still move to Real Madrid or Bengaluru FC after 5pm today?

Correct.

Holmes to Oxford confirmed, so he's not the ex player signing today. I wonder who it could be?

The 5 that are off, are they sharing a cab? Is that why they haven't been announced yet?

Deadline day is very dull isn't it
68  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Ins and Outs - Summer 2018 on: August 09, 2018, 08:33:24 am
Having said that it the deadlines come and go and crooks/Van Veen et al are still here won’t we be left with sulking players on exorbitant wages to carry until at least January - the costs in terms of morale and finances are going to be high.

Possibly but you would also think it is in their interests to knuckle down until January. If they have a good first half of the season (entirely possible in League 2) they will up their earning potential, Crooks especially you would think.

The challenge will be crowd reaction, every mistake will be viewed through the lens that "he doesn't want to be here anyway" by some

i think its fairly obvious

Mastermind is easy when you know all the answers!

van Veen seems obvious for the first point. I would have said Taylor and Crooks for the second but there's a lot of ITK on here saying they're off. Who else would they 'force' to stay?
71  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Ins and Outs - Summer 2018 on: August 07, 2018, 12:51:52 pm
Errr I don’t think I have ever heard the chairman or manager state that he wants to get rid of certain high profile players .
Or that certain players are being made to stay .
I also haven’t read anywhere that specific clubs have approached McWilliams .
All of the above are correct .
No I won’t reveal sources

Obviously fair enough not to reveal sources of course. Shouldn't be anything stopping you identifying the players that they want rid of and the ones they are making stay though is there?
72  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Ins and Outs - Summer 2018 on: August 07, 2018, 10:41:20 am
Are we getting an announcement video for his departure too?

Alex Nichols started in Crewe’s demolition of Morecambe on opening today. Do with someone with his instincts.

I think the hope is that Morais is that man
73  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Shaun McWilliams Injury on: August 06, 2018, 21:15:28 pm
It's been said enough already but jjot is not a defensive midfielder - we need him further up the pitch.

I realise I’m in a minority but I’d be very happy if JJOT and McWilliams were our central midfield pair for most games. I still think he’s better with the game in front of him and arriving late in the box. I’ve never felt he’s ‘dynamic’ enough for that number 10 role. I’ve even got a feelin his goal record per 90 minutes is better when he plays central midfield rather than the advanced role.

Now we have a Morais I’d expect Austin to play a front 2, don’t see him playing as a lone striker and I hope he’s not shunted to the wing a la Hoskins
74  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Ins and Outs - Summer 2018 on: August 06, 2018, 21:10:46 pm
I reckon van Veen will go on loan somewhere
75  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Lincoln game on: August 06, 2018, 19:14:29 pm
Yep all true I guess. I don’t suppose it will have a huge impact, Austin seemingly could have had 2 youth teasers instead of Waters & KvV at the weekend  Grin
76  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Lincoln game on: August 06, 2018, 19:02:42 pm
Didn’t know about that rule. I’d guess that means the likes of Roberts, Whaler, Williams won’t be able to go out on loan in case they need to fill that slot. I hope sticking around here means they still get a decent amount of football.
77  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Ins and Outs - Summer 2018 on: August 05, 2018, 20:56:40 pm
If we haven’t got a list of targets to replace each of our players then someone’s not doing there job. If there is time for someone to leave there’s time to replace them.
78  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Ins and Outs - Summer 2018 on: August 05, 2018, 20:43:32 pm
With McWilliams out it would be madness to sell Crooks, but it's the sort of decision I've come to expect as an NTFC fan.

We’d definitely need 1 more in if Crooks left. McWilliams, Foley and O’Toole are good enough for this league but not sure that would be enough to get us through the season, we’d need to be lucky with injuries and suspensions.

Big fan of Crooks but if him going gives enough for a decent replacement and the mythical wide player we’ve needed for 2 years then I’m all fo it.
79  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Ins and Outs - Summer 2018 on: August 05, 2018, 15:24:05 pm
Goff has gone to Banbury on loan.
I’d hoped our young players would get a loan to a higher level than that
80  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Lincoln game on: August 05, 2018, 15:22:45 pm
If Taylor were to go we would need to bring someone in to replace him in my opinion. Turnbull just doesn’t look like a centre back to me and I thin Austin sees him as more of a left back. Facey is just a bit too short to play centre back in a pair, would probably be ok in a 3. Williams looks a prospect but he needs to be given time to develo, he’s not even on a pro contract yet is he?
