1  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Best midfield option on: Today at 22:24:39
I think each one of us has picked a different combination and each one has failed .
Oxford was a one off because of how they set up at home .
We need a combination of pace , guile and legs .
The main thing is , those that are selected have to perform .
2  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Plymouth Argyle (A) 21/11 on: Yesterday at 17:40:16
Just seen the highlights on the Chron site .
It doesnít reflect well on Pierre who looks like heís a blind man playing with a manhole cover on his back.
No wonder JFH didnít look impressed with him in his post match interview .
We also just back off with supporting midfielders ambling about as they attack .
Some of our players are not putting it in by the the evidence presented on film .
3  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Plymouth Argyle (A) 21/11 on: Yesterday at 10:43:34
As others have said it was reall,y really disapointing.

As good as we were at Oxford, this was bad, bad, bad!!!

The quick high press - evapourated to nothing

The fast passing and breaking changed to slow lathegic side to sidepassing but going nowhere. It's so easy to defend against us as we are so narrow all the time.

The biggest thing that had gone was confidence, effort, commitment and 100% being given by all, you could see it at Oxford, had gone - this is the major worry for me.

It's all well and good saying we will bring players in come jan, but they might take tiome to settle and it maybe like having a new team again.

Saturday is massive for me now!

You are right , itís no good relying on January .
We have a lot of highly paid players here now who need to perform better.
Of course we need more balance but the likes of Crooks and Pierre need to earn their crust
4  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Welcome Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink on: Yesterday at 09:33:07
I always worry when managers talk about ď missing chances ď.
JFH did it again last night .
The point is , we hardly create any chances and so when you miss one , it makes a lot of difference .
All teams at this level miss chances in every game .
Our problem is that we hardly ever open teams up near goal .
Donít rue missed chances when your team only has one or two in any particular game .
5  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Plymouth Argyle (A) 21/11 on: Yesterday at 08:31:07
I keep reading about our "quality midfield" but I see precious little sign of it functioning as a unit on a regular basis.  Little flashes of skill from McCugan and Crooks are simply not enough.  From what I have seen of him McWilliams should be starting games together with a fit JJOT. If Powell continues to improve he earns his place if only for the pace he brings to the side.  The remaining places in midfield and "in the hole" are something of a lucky dip given the other players' inconsistency.
I agree , as I said earlier in the thread , too many big time players are only part performing .
Itís no good playing in flashes and that includes players that have been here for some time .
Of the new players , only Taylor , Grimes and Ingram have performed consistently .
Playing Long up front on his own is a complete joke . It simply doesnít work , and I defy anyone to tell me one game where itís been successful . Even at Oxford we were not clicking up front , it came from midfield dominance .
6  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Plymouth Argyle (A) 21/11 on: November 21, 2017, 22:49:27 pm
Someone on Twitter is suggesting James Hanson in January - Iíve no idea if there is any basis to that and I know beggars canít be choosers but shouldnít we be looking at strikers with pace? Having said that if he was to come in as well as a couple of decent wingers they might provide the service he would need.
I suppose it depends if he persists with one up front .
I think he needs to change that now because Long is getting nowhere on his own .
Who played behind the striker tonight ?
7  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Plymouth Argyle (A) 21/11 on: November 21, 2017, 22:37:01 pm
Anyone else not convinced about the reason JFH gave for taking Pierre off ?
8  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Stats - Easier Games to come on: November 21, 2017, 22:21:30 pm
The teams around us are winning and Oxford and Blackpool looked awful .....
Itís about how we play not who we play
9  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Plymouth Argyle (A) 21/11 on: November 21, 2017, 22:17:58 pm
I kind of agree about the players but playing devils advocate..

Pierre - has he ever played in L1? (Genuinely don't know)
Foley - been relegated lots
Waters - again, ever done it at this level?
Powell - done okay at this level but is very much a mid table player at absolute best.
Moloney - when we signed him wasn't it because he wasn't cutting it at Yeovil?
Crooks - we need to settle on his proper position, again never played at L1 though
Bowditch - lower mid table player at best
Long - young and going to be inconsistent. Shouldn't be our main striker.
Yes but these players came with big reputations and some are on big money here .
Lots of clubs have players that are unproven at this level , but itís about the team combining .
Grimes , Taylor and Ingram are doing it . I think McGugan will get there .
The rest are on catch up .
10  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Plymouth Argyle (A) 21/11 on: November 21, 2017, 21:48:38 pm
The players we have should be competing better in this division. Too many are under performing to their ability .
Pierre , Foley , Waters , Powell , Moloney , Crooks , Bowditch and Long have all been performing in flashes . Even JJOT has been below par .
We will go down at this rate .
JFH needs to think again about the formation . We donít look like scoring . Itís time to try Long and Rico together.
All is not lost but itís not working .
11  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Plymouth Argyle (A) 21/11 on: November 21, 2017, 11:23:26 am
i think he does - and he played it against oxford.

problem is, when powell got injured there wasnt really a natural replacement.

i assume he likes grimes and mcgugan deeper to get on the ball more - problem is they dont have the element of steel of a dean peer.

Yes , you could be right there but Oxford play a passing game and give you space.
Iím not at all sure about JJOT playing off the front man either , he is much better deeper . But then so too are nearly all our other midfielders .
12  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Plymouth Argyle (A) 21/11 on: November 21, 2017, 10:35:52 am
If we can play like we have for the last few weeks ( apart from Saturdayís second half) we will be ok against both Plymouth and Bury. If we carry on like we finished Saturday we will be in trouble. I have a feeling JFH will tighten up the midfield with Poole and possibly McWilliams coming in.
We are good enough to win games like this but we need to step up to the plate and some of the Ďbetterí players need to take responsibility and influence the game more.

Iíd play

You can see why Iím not a football manager.

Itís tempting to go with that selection and it looks good on paper but the reality is it lacks any pace whatsoever.
It would be easy to defend against and lacks width.
I actually donít think JFH knows his best team, so what chance have we got !
13  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Plymouth Argyle (A) 21/11 on: November 21, 2017, 10:07:38 am
For this game , I would pick the following team

Moloney.      Taylor.       Pierre.      Buchanan

                McWilliams   Grimes

Waters             McGugan.                Powell

If Powell isnít fit , Crooks .

However , I think he will play McGugan deep again which means Crooks might play off the front man.
The alternative is to go 4 in midfield and play Rico with Long .
14  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Plymouth Argyle (A) 21/11 on: November 20, 2017, 22:15:47 pm
Is this the longest away journey for us , outside the conference ?
I think it takes the longest in a car , all things being equal .
15  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Plymouth Argyle (A) 21/11 on: November 20, 2017, 18:14:30 pm
I think we are a better away side than home side .
We absorb pressure quite well and are set up to score an odd goal that will sneak us through .
16  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The Iron - AGAIN (H) 18th November on: November 20, 2017, 09:13:02 am
From the sublime (Oxford away) to the ridiculous in a week...
It was a completely different game versus Oxford . They tried to pass through us and played in front of our back four .
Sc***horpe have real pace throughout and exposed us .
17  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The 'Clare Balding' POTS: Scunny - (h) 18/11/2017 on: November 19, 2017, 19:06:49 pm
Thereís only one player who performed throughout the game to a consistent standard and that was Taylor .
JJOT wasnít having the best of games before he came off and Buchanan was constantly done for pace .
18  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The Iron - AGAIN (H) 18th November on: November 19, 2017, 19:02:54 pm
Itís great to see Crookes back. I thought he looked a lazy lump at first but as his fitness improved his game improved greatly. The same this time, give him a couple of games or so to get his sharpness back and heíll be bagging goals again.
Great signing.
The question with Crooks is , where does he play and in place of who ?
How can you get Grimes , McGugan , JJOT and Crooks in the same side ?
I donít think you can .
19  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The Iron - AGAIN (H) 18th November on: November 19, 2017, 17:53:41 pm
We have to play a grafter in midfield , even though it means not playing our best eleven players .
One of Poole or McWillams has to start as a holding player alongside either JJOT or Grimes .
McGugan also has to start further forward , even though he picks nice passes from deep .
Iím not at all sure about Foleyís role or where he is best suited , but he needs to show he is up for it a bit more .
Letís not forget , this game wasnít a game of two halves as many have suggested . We were awful for the opening 15 minutes and only did well for 30 minutes of the first half .

20  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The Iron - AGAIN (H) 18th November on: November 18, 2017, 18:01:11 pm
Baffled by the berks in the West Stand having a go at the Lino, he got every offside spot one, both their breakaway goals were at least a yard onside. The foul for their 1st goal by Crooks was dubious, but if roles were reversed we would have called for a free kick.
Wrong . The second goal was 3 yards off side . The Lino was not in line with play .
