1  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Best International XI on: Yesterday at 22:22:43
This thread has made me laugh like a looney. It quickly descended into farce. I never know whether people on here are genuinely just funny and natural comedians, on the wind up or just plain daft. Wales is also in the British Isles  Roll Eyes
If we're having Eire, then Eddie McGoldrick will be in my team. How about David Seal (Australia)?
I wish I had something funny to say.

Firstly its not important to have an exact copy of some other clubs ground, infact you hear a lot of fans not liking visiting identy kit or lego esque stadium such as little sixfields, so it doesnt sell its self well. Some originality would likely attract more visiting fans.
I suggested  a new 12 row extention behind both goals that are a safe terracing, many fans mainly older wish to remain seated so need catering for, so leaving what is there in situ makes perfect financial  sense.
This way gives the ground a professional outlook and feel with a far greater atmosphere that will in turn attract more supporters and increases capacity to above the much needed 12000.
The funding of this would still require getting in some investment, sponsorship,  long term multiple  ticket sales and most importantly the full support and help of our catchment makes this  very acheivable .
Doing nothing for another 20 years isnt an option any more.
The idea of extending behind both goals appeals to me and surely must appeal to most on here. Safe standing/rail seating would be a great way to go. Still aesthetically pleasing with the current seats remaining intact and thus would attract fans who like to stand safely and legally. When Sixfields was built we were told it was a case of ripping off the roof and building back to extend so the costs would be less than a complete re-build. 12 rows of 100 (I think the North and South Stands are only 100 seats wide) = 1200 additional capacity in each stand taking us up to the 10,000 mark with over 2,000 for away fans in one stand. Finish the East with the boxes and bars to generate income on non-match days too and the ground will be ready for a sustained spell in League One and a cheeky push for the Championship.

And everyone always says the view is terrible at Wimbledon!  Grin

I assumed he meant Wimbledon tennis  Tongue Well I'm in summer mode, Northants cricket are keeping up the form of Cobblers and Saints impressively!

Forget the East Stand, clad it up and instead build on the 4 corners (or at least two of them) exec boxes on 2 or 3 levels similar to Craven Cottage. Chuck in a supporters bar as well. It will fill the gaps, stop the wind and give it an enclosed feel whilst generating more income to eventually build back on the North and South Stands.

Here's another gem. Aldershot away 1992. Both clubs on the brink of extinction. I went with mates in two cars, we were all about 18 at the time, pre-mobile phones time, and the plan was to follow each other down there - we lost each other at Broadmead Avenue ! We won the game 4-1, Dean Edwards netting twice but the result was expunged as the Shots were wound up a few weeks later. During the game the stewards opened up the gates in the fencing that separated the home and away fans. We chatted to each other and I swapped scarves with a Shots fan which I still have. On the way back one of the seatbelt buckles got caught in the car door and the door wouldn't shut properly so had to be held in case it blew open. A weird day.

As this is for under rated and forgotten gems rather than the popular ones a la Bristol Rovers, here's a few that stick out for me and didn't get mentioned often, from my early years following the Cobblers.  Chester away at Sealand Road first game of the 87/88 season. We won 5-0, my first ever away game. Pity no tv footage. 3-2 win at home to Fulham same season. Paul Culpin scoring a Marco van Basten style volley and big Jim Stannard dropping the ball over the line from a Gilbert cross. A 6-0 thrashing of Aldershot in 1988, at the County Ground a Culpin hat trick. A Friday night 5-0 thrashing of Walsall, Greg Campbell with 2 great goals. A 3-2 opening day win at Gillingham in 1992 including a Morrys Scott pearler and a late Phil Chard winner. That'll do me for starters.
7  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Confirmed - Dean Austin new permanent NTFC manager on: May 12, 2018, 22:30:28 pm
I'm pleased with this. It's a sensible appointment after his 5 game interview process. Impressed with his what he says and seems motivational and the players responded to him. If he can trim the current squad by 3 or 4 and add a winger, attacking midfielder and a couple of strikers we should go well. He seems to want to encourage the development of youth so hopefully one or two of these will breakthrough- hopefully one being Iacifano. I'm quite enthused.
8  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: League Two 2018/19 on: May 12, 2018, 22:22:55 pm
That's not the worst set of teams I've seen. Almost half close enough distance wise to tempt an away day. Could do with Exeter going up and keep Notts, Cov and Lincoln down. It looks a strong division though so won't be easy. I'd be expecting all 3 of the failed play off sides to be challenging and the other 3 relegated sides. The likes of Swindon and Mansfield will be up there. One of the promoted sides do well although I'm not sure this time around. My wife's father lives near Crewe/Port Vale and Her sister near Tranmere and I have a mate who has just moved to Cumbria so Carlisle is another weekend possibility. It could be worse.

Northampton 5- Mansfield 1. For 1 beautiful night it all clicked. Steve Terry chipped the keeper. One of the best County Ground nights under lights. All unravelled after that obviously.

I remember that one well. We thought we'd turned the corner that night, then next game lost 7-0 up at Scnthorpe. I was at that game too.

Has anybody got the overall average home league attendance, including away fans? Last season was our highest average for 20 years, just wondering how we compared this season.
11  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Oldham Athletic (h)- Last game of the season- Last game in League One on: May 06, 2018, 00:05:23 am
That was a thoroughly entertaining evening, one of the more enjoyable Sixfields games this season. Nothing riding on it for us of course but our fans were first class and you can see and feel the unity and pride that Dean Austin has restored to the club. Let's bottle that up and take it into next season. It didn't feel like the wake in the face of relegation I expected.  Oldham fans were loud and raucous early on but just seemed to give up later on, odd. I'm sure they will eventually enjoy their League Two adventure after years of struggling in League One.
12  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Relegation Watch on: May 03, 2018, 23:02:48 pm
Not so. If we had lost 2-1 at Oldham instead of 5-1 our goal difference now would have been -31 and Oldham's -20. So it would still need a 6-0 victory to overtake Oldham on goal difference.

Maths hey?! It's obvious now
13  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Oldham Athletic (h)- Last game of the season- Last game in League One on: May 03, 2018, 22:52:47 pm
Cobblers, Saints and County all at home on the same day!

What a sporting town! You could actually go to all 3, morning session at the county, first half of the Saints, full game at the Cobblers.
14  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Close Season Activities on: May 02, 2018, 22:23:29 pm
Some cricket, hoping to see the Steelbacks make a good fist of the T20. Aah, 2016, the year I saw the Cobblers lift the League Two trophy and the County lift the T20 trophy. What a year. I should have known the glory wouldn't  last long.
And some time without football to re-charge the batteries - we've got the World Cup to 'enjoy' though.
15  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Relegation Watch on: May 02, 2018, 22:20:01 pm
If we had only lost 2-1 up at Oldham instead of 5-1, we would only need to win 3-0 on Saturday. I know that's a pointless thing to say really but it just shows how every single match is important.
16  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Oldham Athletic (h)- Last game of the season- Last game in League One on: May 02, 2018, 22:16:07 pm
It will only relegate them if we win and Rochdale get a result, I think a draw or win will be sufficient because Rochdale have a superior goal difference.

If the Saints kick off at 3pm you can do both, Cobblers match is 5:30pm.

Saints kick off at 4pm. The car parks will be full.
17  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Oldham Athletic (h)- Last game of the season- Last game in League One on: May 01, 2018, 19:31:57 pm
I see we have sensibly given them a further 503 tickets, so a total of 1,447. Another 10k income. Let's hope they stay off the pitch!
18  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: KELVIN THOMAS ITS ALL YOUR FAULT on: April 28, 2018, 19:45:22 pm
I think he would have sacked JFH a couple of weeks earlier if it hadn't been the centenary of Walter Tull's death and all that went with it. I genuinely do believe that.
19  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Oldham Athletic (h)- Last game of the season- Last game in League One on: April 28, 2018, 19:41:47 pm
Oldham want more tickets. They reckon they could shift 3,000 !!! Will Sky be interested in the match? I hope not.
20  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Walsall Satdee (great escape part two) on: April 28, 2018, 19:39:19 pm
Really good performance until the subs. So unlucky hitting the woodwork twice as well. Lost all shape and momentum after the subs. If injuries and tiredness played a part in them then fair enough but we needed to carry on playing the way we had been not just aimless long balls and no midfield or centre half. The bench should have known the league table situation, there's enough of them on there, and maybe played it more sensibly. Easy in hindsight I know but any remote chance we may have had next week has gone. It was a **** we lost.
