1541  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Barrow (a) - 7 May 2022 on: May 01, 2022, 18:15:37 pm
Well let's put it another way taking 7 points from their last 5 games all against top 10 teams is 1.4 points per game. In our 18 games against the other top 9 we won 6, drew 6 and lost 6 totalling 24 points or an inferior 1.33 points per game and nobody is calling for JB's head.
1542  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Barrow (a) - 7 May 2022 on: May 01, 2022, 12:39:43 pm
For a team that has just avoided relation taking 7 points from their last 5 games all against top 10 opposition is far from "beach form".
1543  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Barrow (a) - 7 May 2022 on: May 01, 2022, 11:52:10 am
In their last 5 games Barrow have played 5 top 10 teams losing Narrowly 1-2 at Exeter and Swindon and drawing at Salford. At home the have beaten FGR 4-0 and Sutton 1-0 so I doubt that they will be " on the beach" and we will have to be near our best to get the 3 points.
1544  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The are we going up Thread! on: May 01, 2022, 11:11:18 am
I never thought that I would say this but tomorrow lunch time I will be watching Sky and cheering for Salford hoping that Turnball and team mates can take some points off Mansfield as they may beat FGR next Saturday. Salford still have the faintest have chances of reaching the play offs.
I  would be very surprised if Port Vale won at Exeter so if both they and Mansfield drop points a win at Barrow and Bristol Rovers would need to overcome a 6+ goal difference. Unfortunately at home to Scunny's young lads, in front of a big crowd, who knows how many they might get. I hope Rovers don't get 3rd place because as well as my dislike of Barton after they won yesterday their fans were carrying him on their shoulders as if they had just clinched promotion.
Given Barrow's recent form it could be a tough game but we thought that before the Orient game.

Interesting stat.- We are 3rd in div.2 and have scored 56 goals, 2 teams fighting for survival in div.1 Morecambe in 19th have scored 57 and Fleetwood in 20th have scored 60. Their problems are at the other end where they have conceded 87 and 78.

Congratulations Sam, hope your new baby boy let you have some sleep last night. Maybe we will be seeing the Hoskins name on a Cobblers team sheet in future years.
1547  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The are we going up Thread! on: April 29, 2022, 12:46:55 pm
First goal will be important tomorrow as we have not come back to win after going behind this season, in fact I think we have only gained 2 points from a losing position.
1548  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Exeter @home 30/4/22 on: April 28, 2022, 19:25:23 pm
Should be a good game with both teams having something to play for and a sell out crowd. We have an exceptionally good record against Exeter and they have only won 5 times here in the 54 games played with 15 draws and 34 home wins, also outscoring them by a massive 130-57. Recent results have also been good winning 7 of the last 10 home & away with just 1 defeat.
Away from home they have won 9, drawn 8 and lost 5, goals 27-21 so only about 2 goals per game average. However, they were not convincing on Tuesday when they beat Barrow at home 2-1 and they lost their last away game 0-2 at Tranmere which is Tranmere's only win in their last 7 games. Presumably an unchanged team if all are fit.
Referee is Simon Mather and in 32 games he has issued 140 yellows and 10 reds so appears to be quite card happy. His 10 reds is well ahead of most other referees even our old friend Charles Breakspear who we have fortunately avoided for a league game this season. We had Mather for our season opener at home to Port Vale when he sent off their 'keeper who had advanced out of his area and then pulled down Kabamba who had closed him down and won the ball.
I am quietly confident of taking 3 points and think that Barrow away may prove to be the more difficult game.
1549  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The are we going up Thread! on: April 28, 2022, 13:03:13 pm
Although we have to play to win both both games it would not surprise me if 4 points proved to be enough. I think that Port Vale and Mansfield are likely to drop points and not be able to win both of their games which would leave only Bristol Rovers who could finish on 80 points with us. They have 2 winnable games but if we won our game by a single goal it would mean them having to make up a 7 goal difference.
1550  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Opinions on our loan players. on: April 24, 2022, 18:39:29 pm
Which of our loan players do you think have been a success?
The first time I saw Eppiah I thought he had good close control and would cause defences problems. Unfortunately he has had injury issues but I think we are now seeing him at his best and I consider him a definite plus.
Lubala has had plenty of opportunities but has not shown the form he was apparently capable of at Crawley and earned him his transfer to Blackpool. Was expected to be a goal threat but has failed to score and now is not even on the bench - a disappointment.
Zimba and Kanu we have seen so little of as both have had injuries so it is impossible to form an opinion.
The other player I would rate as a success would be Magliore who had to bide his time to make his debut as we were playing only 2 centre backs but he was good when he came in and looked to bring the ball out of defence and had a turn of pace. Unfortunately like all of the other loans he too suffered an injury.
1551  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The are we going up Thread! on: April 24, 2022, 18:25:17 pm
We have scored 9 goals in the last 3 games and I think JB has got lucky here. With Lewis's suspension and ultimate injury JB was forced into a selection change and we have benefitted with Eppiah starting each game. Had Lewis been fit I wonder which player would have been in the starting 11.
1552  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Orient away (23rd) on: April 24, 2022, 08:04:52 am
What a fascinating and unpredictable game football is. 3 games ago we trailed Port Vale by 5 points and while our form was very inconsistent they were finding ways to scrape victories every game. Now we are a point in front and after failing to score in so many recent games we have now scored 9 in the last 3. Remember Orient had conceded less than a goal a game at home (17 in 21 games) and never more than 2 in a single game yet we blew them away in a performance reminiscent to last seasons game at home to Portsmouth, the only other time a JB team has scored 4.
Pinnock's goal was an absolutely tremendous strike, it was good to see Eppiah opening his account and it looks like the battle of the centre backs is going to the wire as they both now have 8. We have a week off while Exeter have to play on Tuesday night which may work in our favour but we have a good record against them and they regard us as their bogey team. They have sold their allocation and it promises to be great occasion and if we can produce a performance close to yesterdays I believe we will take the points.
1553  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The are we going up Thread! on: April 23, 2022, 19:22:53 pm
It could be that 4 points would be enough to get 3rd place. Exeter will be assured of promotion if they beat Barrow on Tuesday and they may be up with FGR if they don't win at Swindon. With FGR going to Mansfield on the final day Exeter will be wanting to beat Port Vale and even if Port Vale got a point they would still finish below us. That leaves Bristol Rovers who would be able to finish on 80 points with us if they won their 2 remaining games which they may do (Rochdale away and Scunny at home). We currently have a 6 goal better goal difference to Rovers but they could score heavily against an already relegated Scunny. Let's just take the 6 points to be certain.

I have often wondered why infinitum always gets added but never subtracted.
1555  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Orient away (23rd) on: April 21, 2022, 19:49:05 pm
Orient have had quite a strange season, when we narrowly beat them in late November they were around the play off places. However their season took a sharp decline after the covid break as they failed to win any of their next 13 games resulting in their manager Kenny being told to get his Jackett. Richie Wellens has replaced him and they have won 6 of their last 8 games.
At home Orient have won 9, drawn 5, lost 7, goals 34-17 so not a great home record. They have failed to score in 9 of the 21 games (including 6 consecutive games during their bad run of results) which means the 34 they have scored have been from the remaining 12 games (almost 3 goals a game) putting 3 past Exeter and 4 past Sutton and Swindon. They also have kept 9 clean sheets and so far they have conceded more than 1 on only 5 occasions.
We have come away with some points on just over half of our 38 visits with 9 wins, 11 draws and 18 defeats and in our last 9 away games have conceded only 5 goals With 21 clean sheets we need another 2 to equal our club record. Expecting an unchanged team.
Darren Handley is refereeing who we have had once before this season for our pulsating 0-0 away to Scunny.
1556  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Welcome back Martin Foyle as Head of Recruitment on: April 20, 2022, 17:50:13 pm
Connolly has been pretty much a regular starter for Morecambe (but hardly got a look in here) and after taking 10 points from their last 5 games they are edging closer to staying up with Adams back in charge.
1557  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Louis Appere on: April 19, 2022, 01:58:08 am
2 goals in 2 games and 2 more assists today (still Monday over here). Certain critics have gone very quiet.
1558  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Harrogate Town (h) Easter Monday on: April 17, 2022, 18:25:59 pm
My final stats from over the pond as we should be back in the UK on Wednesday.
Harrogate have gained more points away than at home and only 3 teams have scored more away goals, but only Sc***horpe have conceded more. They have won 7, drawn 4 and lost 10, goals 29-35. Despite scoring so many they have still failed to score in 9 of the 21 games (also failed to score in 4 of the last 5) but in the other 12 games they have scored at least 2 on 11 occasions. So another clean sheet would be useful and after FGR lost 0-4 at Barrow we again have the best defensive record in the division.
Harrogate are in a poor run of form and have been gradually slipping down the table after only 1 win and 5 points from their last 10 games, they also have injury problems.
As mentioned Robert Lewis is in charge and in 29 games he has issued 91 yellows and 3 reds.
I am expecting a comfortable 3 points (probably an unchanged team) as the Harrogate team were on the beach this morning and said they would not be turning up.
1559  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The are we going up Thread! on: April 16, 2022, 14:02:00 pm
I did say relatively easy and Newport have only won 1 of their last 5 games taking just 4 points. But as we know anything can happen in football, some teams have failed to score at Sc***horpe and lost at home to Barrow.
1560  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The are we going up Thread! on: April 16, 2022, 13:26:24 pm
Sutton 3 points behind us with a game in hand have a relatively easy last 5 games.
