1  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Relegation Watch on: November 21, 2023, 17:42:35 pm
I didn't count but must have been similar. It's a hard one to revise for with so much history but they threw a few easier ones in for the 'common' fan.
I'm sure I saw DYL post on here not too long ago, so maybe he can remind us of his experience.

It was a long time ago. 15 years I reckon. So I'm not surprised people don't recognise me from the video.

I originally wanted to do 1960-2000 but they told me they wanted me to do the entire history of the club. So that's what I did. I went through every book I could find pulling out facts that could plausibly be asked about and turning them into questions to practice. Frank Grande was a great help in providing context and clarifications. By the time I went on I had pushing 1000 questions written. Haven't watched it back for a while but from memory I missed a cup shock, which was simply down to the pressure of trying to recall it at speed, and a player of no significance who hadn't crossed my radar

After all that prep it felt like an easy ride. But the reason you do all of that prep is to be able to answer at speed when you need to. I lost in the semis that year. A few years later I got to the semis again and did Herbert Chapman as my subject. Alas I lost on a tiebreak. I had one more stab at it, and again lost in the semis. A couple of years later after success on 15 to 1 I got asked to write for 15 to 1, and when the questions team moved to Mastermind I went with them. So now that I write for the show I won't be able to go on it again.

But it is a scary and exhilarating experience to go on Mastermind. I'd recommend it to anyone.

As a postscript, when I was prepping The Cobblers, unbeknowns to me the question writer was struggling to get his hands on the centenary history. I'm known in quiz circles for being a Cobblers fan, so even though he didn't know me I got a private message on a message board asking if I had a copy he could borrow. I didn't reply and told the show's producer immediately and that was that. Many months later when the show was due to be broadcast the Mail on Sunday ran a full page article headed "mastermind contestant asked to write his own questions" which of course was not what happened. They made no attempt to contact me before publication. In the course of pursuing a complaint against them they initially claimed that they couldn't find a way of contacting me. When I told them I was in the phone book (that's how long ago it was) the Managing Editor had to admit fault. He also admitted that I was collateral damage in an attack on the BBC. That's who they were really after. The story was repeated by the Independent and Telegraph almost word for word, and thereafter went worldwide. The only place it was taken down was on the Mail's website after my complaint. It was a real eye opener.

I saw mention elsewhere of Deal or No Deal. I haven't done that. I stick to quizzes. I think that was Glen Cousner.

Since when does a High Court judge know everything?  and as I said, the establishment have a 9-0 headstart

Didn't the Judge say Cildara was just a stalling tactic or similar. WTF?

They are highly skilled and experienced in these types of deals, they had tried to buy the football club, they had several meetings prior with WNC, etc etc

The JR Judge decided the decision reached and procedures was lawful.

Look at the courts and ULEZ, Khan fixed the research, ignore various data, made false claims etc etc etc and he still won in court

So Cildara had little chance IMO, not because of their claim but because they were going up against the system and establishment.

If we didn't know that the Trust leadership was delusional before we do now.

Cite all the conspiracy theories you like, but the truth is you got into bed with the wrong people and were made to look foolish and complicit in activities that could only hurt the club.

The Trust leadership has brought the Trust into disrepute.

This is not the Trust of Brian Lomax. This is a travesty
3  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Redevelopment Closer Than Ever? on: September 28, 2022, 10:52:19 am
Good news.  Buy the land for £3m, flip it for £20m as it's worth circa £1m an acre according to the Trust.  Then invest the WHOLE profit in to the infrastructure of the football club.  What's not to like?  No greedy land grabbers, no land developers who have no interest in the football club.

No Stand, No Land can be reinserted and an agreement reached with the council where the development land is only released after the completion of the East Stand.  Heck we probably get a better East Stand.  All being delivered in a completely open and trasparent way that is purely about what's best for the football club and it's supporters.

Can someone tell me the downsides as I don't see any?

Here's a potential downside, using the Trust's own arguments against KT (not based on a belief it would happen).

Buy the land for £3m, flip it for £20m and the Trust Board members each walk away with a tidy sum.

What's to stop that happening? If you believe KT might do it, you have to believe it is a possibility with the Trust.

What is to stop it?

On Saturday the West Stand erupted into "You're not fit to run the line", after the Assistant Referee correctly gave a goal kick. I say correctly...I guess it's possible that a ball might change direction mid air in very close proximity to a player without them touching it, but I find that highly unlikely.

I suspect that the gender of the Assistant Ref may have been at the heart of it.
5  The Hotel End / Other Football & Sport / Playfair Qatar - help to stop people dying on: September 28, 2016, 15:42:42 pm
It is estimated that 64 construction workers will die for every match played at the 2022 World Cup.

A friend of mine runs the Playfair Qatar campaign. This campaign aims to get FIFA to address the terrible conditions experienced by workers building stadiums for the 2022 World Cup.

On the 15th October, fans around the country are being encouraged to take a selfie at their match holding a Playfair Qatar sign. Our game v Millwall is that day. If you are going and are happy to take a couple of minutes on that day to support the campaign please let me know below.

Personally the thought of watching that World Cup, clearly bought by Qatar from corrupt FIFA officials, and seeing games played in stadia built at such a cost to human life makes me feel sick. If international pressure can save one life it will be worth it. I hope you will join the campaign.

With less than a quarter of the season gone we are a third of the way to the points tally we will need for survival. That's a massive positive, especially considering the morons who were saying that if we lost to MK they would be calling for Page's head.

We will only have a proper idea of how good we actually are once we've played every team once, but right now we look more than capable of surviving in this Division.
7  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: How should the club spend the Man U money? on: September 23, 2016, 15:37:35 pm
Blimey, how much do people think we made? I'm betting not nearly as much as is being assumed.

And costs will have been higher. Policing for one thing, especially after the handbags at the Walsall game.
8  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Taylor on: September 10, 2016, 20:41:16 pm
Anyone see him 'apparantly' bollock our fans in the North Stand today?!

It was one guy, I won't call him a fan, who shouted abuse at Taylor for not crossing. Taylor reacted and the guy fired more abuse at him. That's just not on.

I told him he was a prick and to shut up. Others started a Matty Taylor chant to put him in his place. When Taylor got MOTM this idiot's humiliation was priceless. People were literally turning round to laugh at him. Preposterous idiot.

Should all be banned unbelievable scenes today absolute disgrace showed their true colours  Angry

More sectarian nonsense.

Hibs fans had just won the Scottish Cup for the first time since Adam was a lad. Who would begrudge them their pitch invasion? I condemn anyone who attacked a player (if that's what happened) and I hope they are sent down, but let's look at the full picture.

Why were Rangers fans on the pitch? There was only one reason - they wanted to fight.

When Rochdale were promoted for the first time in decades we were the away team at Spotland. As we applauded their players and fans, some dickheads came over and started gesturing and taunting. Did we run on the pitch and fight them? No, we just went home. Rangers fans had a choice, and they chose to run onto the pitch and fight.

11  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Redevelopment Closer Than Ever? on: May 24, 2016, 09:35:29 am
Predicting League One attendances by looking back at a relegation season does not seem a terribly clever way of anticipating demand for the coming year (except in quantifying a worst case scenario).

Gates were lower than you might think because we were playing sh*t and people did not really want to come and watch dross no matter who we were playing. Provide better fare on the pitch this time and the crowds will be healthier.
12  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Football League could be set for massive shake-up on: May 20, 2016, 10:48:19 am
The Premier League negotiated a TV deal for 2016-19 worth £5.14billion. If even just one billion of that was filtered down equally to football league clubs each of the 72 clubs would get approximately £14million - about £4.6million for each of the three years.

The Football League will never get even vaguely close to that proportion of the Premier League's tv money.

The Premier League is a cartel that serves the needs of its members. It does not have the wider interests of the game at heart.
13  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: The awards night dinner on: May 02, 2016, 11:22:29 am
It was a superb night. A worthy finale to an awesome season. The mood in the room was fantastic, getting to lift the trophy was a privilege, and the players and management were only too happy to pose for photos. Considering how many people there were to serve, I was very impressed with the food. The club has got so much right this season, and this was yet another example.

There are things to improve on of course. With this being the first event of this scale you would expect that. It would be great if the videos could be put online because it wasn't always easy to make out what people were saying. The displays on the tables meant you couldn't always see what was happening on stage, so using the screens around the room to show what was going on up there would have been good. The bar was a bit chaotic, and it would really help if staff knew how to pour drinks and what the prices were. But all of that is mentioned in a spirit of constructive criticism.

My 80 yr old Mum who only follows the Cobblers on radio and in the Chron really enjoyed the night. People she'd never met before chatted to her, and she loved the family feel of the club. Most of all she was impressed that Kelvin Thomas was so much of a man of the people, when she imagined the club Chairman would be aloof. I will treasure the memories of this season, and of spending the awards night with my Mum, fellow fans, the players, staff, management and Chairman.

It really does feel like we have people who know what they are doing running the club now, and that we are going places.

14  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Steve Riches .... Giblet update? on: April 30, 2016, 10:18:15 am
Still in Son Espaces hospital Mallorca after a nasty relapse that was far worse than the first event. More of my giblets missing, look emaciated (yes I know I needed it!) and last night a special line into my large vein started to put in nutrients. Lonv path but determined to do it. Tough for Kate too who's back out here. Exemplary hospital treatment. Phoned my 15-year old to tell him to enjoy today at Sixfields and ended up bawling my eyes out. I'm not going to see us play again this season. UP THE COBBLERS!

Get well soon Steve. You are in the best place and they will ensure that you have years and years left to spend with your wife, family and the Cobblers.
15  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Open top bus parade... on: April 19, 2016, 09:07:08 am
The 1997 bus tour was enhanced by the fact that 30K+ of Northamptonians had been at Wembley the day before to witness the victory and were still being carried along by that emotion (and alcohol) to turn out to cheer the victors.

THIS

There is nothing worse than a sparsely attended open top bus parade. It makes you look Mickey Mouse. I remember when we went up in 2000 we had an end of season charity match, with the squad larking around (I recall Keith Welch sat on a chair in the goal mouth reading the paper and John Hodge clowning around). It was a great celebratory occasion. I'd much rather that than a lacklustre parade.
16  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Wilder....boltons preferred choice on: April 16, 2016, 21:05:43 pm
FFS we'd just won the league and he wanted to be celebrating with his team. Why the hell would he want to start answering questions about his future at that moment in time?

I would have loved him to have said "I'm staying put", but I'm not going to lose sleep over him not answering that question posed as it was during the immediate post match celebrations.
17  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: You can't catch us now! on: April 10, 2016, 09:52:29 am
It's hard to see either of them losing another match. So we still might have some work to do to clinch the title.
18  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Bristol Rovers (h) on: April 07, 2016, 12:19:44 pm
I generally like Collins. But since 'Pissgate' he hasn't looked quite the same player. I wonder if he is resentful of the punishment he received, and/or he has been told he is off at the end of the season. Against Notts County he looked disinterested a lot of the time. Whereas at his best he can be a handful and a potent if slightly wasteful goalscorer.
19  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: "Things shouted out by the knob head who sits behind/next/near me". on: April 05, 2016, 19:27:53 pm
The IRA song is essentially a sectarian football chant, with the word Posh replacing the word Pope.

You might think it is cool to sing belligerently about the IRA, but by perpetuating sectarian hatred 30 years after the Anglo-Irish Agreement and nearly 20 years after the Good Friday Agreement, you contribute to an environment in which people in certain parts of the UK continue to die because of which side of the sectarian divide they were born on. Sure, you aren't directly responsible, but until sectarianism is deemed totally unacceptable and communities heal people will keep dying. But hey, you like singing it so who cares about a few bodies?

20  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: 100 points and 100 goals - Can we do it? on: March 29, 2016, 10:31:59 am
We are due to give someone a good spanking so maybe Notts County can be the day. I want to see a 4 or 5 nil, get us to 89 points ahead of the final 6 games.

I think it could go either way.

Either we will build on the second half at Mansfield and rediscover the irresistible attacking football that got us where we are. Or the iffy recent form that we saw in the first half v Mansfield, the whole of Newport and the first half of Stevenage will see us lose sooner rather than later. I really hope we don't limp across the line after the fantastic form we showed in the January and February.
