What i find amusing is he gets berated for changing the team and not playing crooks.

at the same time we had a thread running, saying who should we drop Grimes or Crooks?

I listened to his reasoning for dropping JJOT back in there, and i agree he probably is the best player to play in that deep role in Crooks' place.  Were the problem lies is that although that is the case, McWilliams/poole/foley in the deep role,  is a better option than foley in the 10 role.

Interesting points. Especially considering we didn't concede once we moved Foley away from the central position, and actually took the game to them (albeit, briefly) once Hilda took the no. 10 position.

Facey in for Moloney if fully fit as well?

You'd fully expect so. We've really missed his calmness on the ball since he went off a couple weeks back.
3  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Scunny (A) 17th Feb on: February 16, 2018, 09:17:37 am
Turnbull left back and Bunney left wing for this game hopefully. Van Veen up top with Ariyibi on the right and O'Toole behind the striker.... bring it on!
4  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: J F H on: February 16, 2018, 09:16:30 am
I'm not saying it right or wrong mate, but with the options avaliable and given how well o toole has been playing I would have played Mcwilliams  (1st option), (Foley 2nd option) in that holding position before sacraficing jj from just behind long. That is just my opinion.

I know it's a game of opinions, but I'd be interested to see why you'd play Foley in the middle ahead of O'Toole? O'Toole was in League 2 team of the year in this position, and probably our star player in the same position last season.

Foley has looked far too lightweight for me in the middle. Seems to lose most 50/50s, poor positional play and doesn't offer much in ability. I personally think his work rate and stamina is definitely better appreciated offering balance on the wing.

I think I saw we haven't managed a win away at Scunny since 1980  Shocked

Surely all runs come to an end eventually?
6  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: J F H on: February 14, 2018, 14:45:04 pm

Plus...the whole "wait till he's got his own players" thing......well didn't he bring in 9 newbies?  He only started three of them last night (O'Donnell, Bunney, Turnbull) with another three brought on as subs (Perreira, Ariyibi, Mathis) with 3 more (Facey, Bridge and van Veen) not featuring at all.

So every new player (who is fit and available) played, except Bridge?

JFH is a monster.

Can he ??  I can’t remember the last incisive pass he made .. he has a genuine vision when kicking for touch however

Did you miss last night? If so, he picked out Taylor for our only goal of the game.

I read recently that many years ago Charlton Athletic fans sang the same song and it was in reference to an heroic and at the time famous First World War military horse that died in battle.

Depends how you read it!! If you are calling us playing one up front a "strength" then fair enough. He knew how we'd play so worked a system to exploit that. IMO Hasselbaink looks to nullify opposition teams rather than impose on them.

4 defenders and two holding midfielders, with only one player up front, at home.....really?? What is the "strength"Huh?

The strength is where the criticism lays (in my opinion). And that is with the O'Toole and Long combo.

Rochdale nullified it successfully playing 3 at the back, and it looked like Gillingham tried the same.

page got rid of Jason Taylor and Creswel  these  have never been replaced. very poor move

And both have been non league ever since. Don't think either would have performed particularly well at all in this league.
11  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: J F H on: February 14, 2018, 13:21:30 pm
You only have to read Lovells comments from his post match interview to see the difference between the managers.

He "knew" we'd only play one up front so switched to a back 3....no point in having a full back there he said. Therefore he loaded the midfield and won the battle.

Lovell went to exploit our tactics and weaknesses....Hasselbaink looks to negate opposition strengths. He's too worried about trying to stop our opponents from playing rather than just play our own game and give THEM something to think about.

Lovell has done a good job at Gillingham....his first managerial post. Won 12 out of 25 games and only lost 5. They have only failed to score in 2 of those 25 games.

Opposition manager tries to negate our strengths and is successful. Praised for his approach.

Our manager tries to negate their strengths and is unsuccessful. Criticized for his approach.

I understand the team and manager will come under scrutiny on the back of another poor home defeat. But you have to be consistent with how you criticize managers.

Fully agree about defending corners, unless we are 1-0 up with less than ten mins to go, you have to leave long up there. I’m not sure what use he or Hoskins are back defending in our box.  I’m not sure I’d sack JFH over it though.

I saw a month back we are on the longest streak in the entire football league for consecutive corners faced without conceding. Not sure we've conceded since then either.

For how negative it appears, and for how much my personal preference of leaving 3 players forward, it's working well. Most Prem sides have adopted this too.

I did chuckle when the guy behind me (one of the biggest moaners of sat near in my 20ish years a season ticket holder) shouted, 'What can Long possibly do stood there?!'.... only for him to intercept a quick corner played to the edge of the box  Grin

I've now seen Turnbull play left back twice and thought he looks excellent there. Centre back two or three times, and think he looks a bit of a liability/brings Taylor down with him. Not sure if it's Turnbulls fault, or if it is Bunney giving him no protection? Either way, I'd prefer Poole and Taylor in the middle until Pierre returns.

O'Toole finally played in his perceived best position by us amateur football managers, albeit at a very odd time (on the back of a POTM award in the No. 10 role!), and he also struggled. We really could have used Crooks in there.

On the positives, I thought Powell, Ariyibi and Hilda worked very well together for a short spell. I said at the time they needed a link up striker (Van Veen?) as Long appeared to disappear during our one positive spell.

We're rapidly coming into the closing stages of the season. Hopefully JFH can find his best 11 quickly.
14  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Grimes/Crooks on: February 14, 2018, 09:12:03 am
We really missed Crooks last night. I think Foley does a 'Milner' role playing on the wing, but just doesn't seem physical enough in the middle.

Hopefully we can see the return of Crooks Grimes and O'Toole for Scunny away.
15  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: JJOT : EFL League One Player Of The Month on: February 13, 2018, 13:39:37 pm
Correct Ricky Holmes January 2016 and it was Bayo November 2012 before that.

Only one player from the championship season? Disgraceful.
16  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Gilly @ Home 13th Feb on: February 13, 2018, 12:17:03 pm
After much thought and deliberation... I'm expecting another comfortable victory on our way to safety.

When we do though, it's a fine moment. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=R-h52ga6Jd0 take 0.50 of this video for example  Cool

Adam Smith auditioning for Superman is only bettered by the Stevenage left back showing Holmes onto a perceived weak foot.
18  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Gilly @ Home 13th Feb on: February 12, 2018, 19:15:48 pm
I think it will be the same starting line up as Saturday .
One thing that confirms is that despite all the protestations we had no wide players prior to January - look who we have ended up settling for in the advanced positions .....
Two players that were already here .....

I firmly believe Long was rested with Tuesday in mind. I can see him coming in, and the rest staying as is.
19  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Gilly @ Home 13th Feb on: February 12, 2018, 14:20:08 pm
Alternatively, Cobbler78 could have a disastrous day at the office if we win say 1-0, but Oxford get beat by 3 goals…and thus the Gills move into the top half of the table on goal difference despite losing.

Cobblers win and Oxford lose? Just need MK to lose and that'll be one successful Tuesday.
20  The Hotel End / Cobblers Corner / Re: Stats - Easier Games to come on: February 12, 2018, 12:25:19 pm
78 insists that there are “easier games to come” due to playing sides in the bottom half of the table and this is an indisputable fact. Not might be, or possibly, but there irrefutably will be. Right there is the issue for most. Had he called the thread “Stats probably easier games to come” there wouldn’t be a problem.

Easier games to come is titled correctly in my opinion. People just confuse the word easier, with easy.
