I remember several years ago on the Campus that I work on. Having a language school which consisted of, in the main Italian children aged 8 to 14 stopping over. On the warm summer evening they would gather in groups of 3 upwards to kick a ball about, I could not believe my eyes, very much part of the kick about was these kids dropping like they got shot every time they were challenged, they rolled around play acting like they were not going to survive.

Were they able to control a ball kicked towards them?

Ok. So the kids 18 and a half. Just.

He's scored 7 goals...none of which were penalties...in what? About 10 starts.

He's very good in the air, his work rate is unbelievable and so far...touch wood...his somewhat fragile physique has more than held up to the physical elements of the game.

In addition he's VERY quick, good with his feet and is a real team player.

This lads different to the situation we had with Crackers, Chambers, Bunn and Johnson. In my opinion his potential far far exceeds the aforementioned players...add into the equation he's a striker...and he is VERY young.

What do people think his current value actually is? Factoring in potential of course. If the club say were to cash in their chips in January to a prem club who agreed to loan him back to us for the remainder of this season what would be the bottom line?

My view is 5million. I say that sincerely. And I honestly think that if we were to get promoted this season that could be double as a 19 year old in 15 months time. Of course that would be a huge gamble and one I can not see DC making if a big bid comes in during the next window. And I would understand the reasons why, even though I would be gutted.

What's the general consensus?

Think he needs a full season of first team football before anyone can make an informed judgement on him.
He is a raw talent , of that there is no doubt but bandying about huge figures concerning his worth can only be counter productive at this stage.
Personally I'm keeping my powder dry about young Ivan , he still could be almost anything at this stage. Premiership star or L2 journeyman ?........ not sure yet.

The issue is we never achieve enough to get the full value from a player. We don't have the coaching staff, or good enough players around any really talented ones to push on. Not helped by the opposition they're playing against of course. Look at B Johnson, Morrison or Howard for example.
Seriously, how many league one players have sold for £10m? That's a genuine question, I don't know. Then factor in the 'Cobblers' selling prowess.

If someone tabled 500k in January with sell on's, he be filed under 'running costs'
I hope we see him for another couple of seasons and that he doesn't end up at Cogenhoe.

I think in young Ivan's case it's unrealistic to. He's just too good.

Scum sold a striker about 3 years older than Ivan for 8.5million before the season started.

He's not gonna end up non league providing he gets the right guidance. He's clearly a good lad so that shouldn't come into it...

Hope we don't sell him before DC leaves otherwise I think I know who will benefit the most.

He's a good lad, but not a Messi. Try to keep calm, he's only a novice 4th Division player.

But my question was..what do people think he's worth?

I think we've done the right thing by giving him that extended contract first of all.

Unless there's a release clause in there that pretty much leaves the ball in our court to find a fee we're happy with unless he really agitates to leave the club (i.e. refuses to play/train but that wouldn't speak a lot for his professionalism at the age of 18!).

Luke James is probably a decent barometer.  Went to Posh from Hartlepool for a supposed £1m after scoring 16 goals in his first proper season in a relegated League 1 club, 19 years of age.

There's a ceiling to how much anybody is ever going to get for a League 2 player though, £1.5m seemingly that limit.  The fee for Gazzaniga was undisclosed as far as I'm aware and isn't even confirmed as being the record fee for Gillingham so you can take the £2.77m here with a pinch of salt.

When Crewe sold Nick Powell to Man. Utd. some places reported the fee as £4million plus add ons.

Unlike Chambers, Bunn etc, he's tied down to a long term deal. Unless someone is going to offer some seriously stupid money at this point we should try and hold on to him.

I gave up worrying about subjects like this long ago as we all know the ubiquitous undisclosed fee will come into play.
I think they should be banned from football,at a time when the game is trying everything to become more transparent and corruption free the fact that clubs can still withhold transfer fee information from the paying public proves there is still a long way to go.
