Yeah proberly Wigan, but my point being is that everyone on here was saying Northampton is not a rugby town on the basis of, more people in the town support A FOOTBALL TEAM rather than A RUGBY TEAM, i doubt thats even the case in Wigan. Wigan and Northampton, are proberly the few towns then, where there is a rugby team, which gets greater crowds than a football team.

Look just accept that they are there, you'll never get rid of them because they will claim prejudice against a minority. We all know rugby is a game for closet queers. They just want to huddle down and sniff each others arses and think that calling it a "scrum" makes it ok. Also they spend the rest of the time pulling each other onto the floor and rolling on top of them calling it a "tackle". No!! We all know it's just his tackle you want to play with.

If the Saints played 4 divisions down, they wouldn't even get 400 people turning up, let alone 4,000. All this argument about Saints/Cobblers is pointless. Saints play at that sport's highest UK level and thus attract relatively big numbers from a massive catchment area, there aren't many top-level clubs to cover the country. Their sport is also split N/S with Rugby League & Rugby Union in a way that does not afflict soccer. A lot of people drive from Northampton to the big association football clubs such as Villa, and some get on coaches each weekend and trek to Man Utd, Arsenal etc. That's what they have to do to see soccer at a live top-level. This site often complains about "Glory hunters" who follow the Cobblers only for big games - but that's what it's about, wanting to see something more compelling than yet another drab division 4 game, if we're honest about it. What is provided at Sixfields is just a small part of a much bigger entertainment system and we do well to compete at all. The only reason many of us are wedded to the Cobblers is nothing to do with the standard of the football, it is a more complicated thing to do with territorial identity - ie. we have a huge emotional attachment. Why else would we put up with it? Obviously if the Cobblers ever reach the Championship, then gates will increase dramatically to match the better standard, and eventually the "Glory-hunters" will become emotionally-attached fans too. Unlike Rugby with a relatively tiny pyramid of clubs, the Cobblers are in a much bigger competitive pyramid, probably ten times bigger, so Premiership soccer is statistically much harder to attain and maintain than Premiership Rugby. Therefore, I'd say that comparisons of the 2 are largely a waste of time - comparing 2 totally different systems. What probably lies at the root of all this is the small number of fans of Saints and Cobblers who stupidly try to pick arguments with each other, usually based either on envy or on some perceived class difference or misguided feelings of superiority. As somebody observed elsewhere on this site, I'm one of those who loves the Cobblers, and likes the Saints. If I could watch both clubs regularly, I would. Bear in mind, however, that a Rugby season ticket at that level costs a lot, but only gives you half the number of games that you get from following a Football league club, so I don't have a season ticket for both clubs. If I take my family of 4 (2 adults 2 children) to the Saints and go for the cheapest seats, I'll still have to fork out around £100. It's a very expensive club to follow. A lot of people will stand that cost because of the quality of play, and the perceived kudos. However, if they'd just lost 5 league games in a row as we have, believe me the moaners would soon surface there, too!

Sorry to admit it but I agree with every sentiment in Steve Riches posting. You only have to be at Liverpool and Ipswich games when Jacobs and Davis scored to observe the difference and that is the passion and numbers that follow a fourth tier sporting club. For the Saints last away game in the country's top league of Rugby Union the Daily Telegraph reported a cheer went up from 'a knot of Saints fans' when they scored a try. The Chron regularly reports only 200 away Saints fans (unless its a jolly to France or Ireland!!). If the Cobblers ever played similar national teams like Arsenal, Man. United or Chelsea the away support would be 2 thousand plus not 2 hundred.

I'd like to add Bath as well. Do you think Leicester have these debates as well? On the League front, Castleford, Wakefield, St. Helens and Wazza's favourite Warrington are probably Rugby towns. Hull used to be, but is probably now a football town.

I would say Bedford is a rugby town & Bedford Modern School is a sports orientated school for boys with rugby being the main sport taught.

I'd say that Bedford is a cricket town as its predominantly Asian population has little interest in football or egg-chasing.

Leicester do fella. Having lived there for most of my life..I'd know! Only couple of seasons back when Leicester were at Hartlepool in LC1...big dust off on their forum about Tigers shirts in away stand. Some obviously said '' we're all Leicester'' or that if they're travelling that far..fair play. Others felt they should piss off! In regards to Steve Riches' ''looking for excuses to pick fights with each other''...I don't have to like Saints..or Saints fans for that matter...I personally find it rather pathetic when Cobblers fans are all sing in "if you hate Peterborough.." then talk about the horrors of football hooliganism...Like younger West Ham fans who've probably never even met a Millwall fan...Posh in reality, are hardly worth hating...Saints..more reasons imo!

I think one agreement we will all find is that if the Cobblers were to play at a much higher lever, crowds would rise. The Saints are at the higest level so they are going to be popular, end of.

.....while sucess is a big attraction for floating sports fans, so is matchday experiance, .....Saints are light years in front of the cobblers.
As a DUAL FAN you are well-placed to comment, liked your post........ What could NTFC do easily to improve? and at little cost to get highest return!? AND can you post on Match Day Experience thread please? You have 60 seconds go! No, next 60 hours would be good! Phil Andrews (New volunteer helper featured in tonights Chron sports pages)

People will go where they get the most bang for their buck. I tried Saints and must admit even the most thrillling game bored me. Part 'cos ball out of play so much, can't see ball, offside is and no buzz. I can reduce a live Saints game recorded on Telly and watch on FF/stop/play in 20 minutes. Anyone else do this? I NEVER watch other rugby teams. Hate biase of that Bath bloke whatisname against Saints. Agree, we must allow our club to let us buy drinks from them! Phil Andrews (the bloke in the Chron tonight who is trying to sort the 50/50 so fans who want them can buy them AND get a return to add to their 'match day experience')
