Obviously I don't know Langmead's condition, and he and Cresswell would make for a slow and cumbersome pair at centre back. Robertson has looked better at centre half but his form at left back was horrendous.

But the Archer and Alfei decisions? Proverbial No Brainers surely?

If you haven't got two decent defensive full backs, don't play any. Three centre-backs, two wing backs. Always liked that system.

Why was Archer sat on the bench until Duke got injured then?

In row V again last night and there was nearly a whole team sat in the walking wounded area up there.
Until we get some of these available again I'm afraid that what we witnessed last night will be the norm.
ps
If Hackett has a bad back how could he run up and down the steps ?  Just asking loike  Tongue

Totaly agree, that system has served us well in the past.

Please don't blame the injuries on us leaking goals at the level we are...

ARCHER - ALFEI - ROBERTSON - CRESWELL - STEVENS

Compared to....

DUKE - TOZER - ROBERTSON - CRESWELL - STEVENS

HUGE Difference. We wouldn't have shipped 6 goals in the last 2 games with the latter - take the two idiots out of the back 5 and drop in 2 reasonable players in place of them...and the defensive unit is adequate again and good enough to get us through until Collins and co come back.

At the start of the season (until Newport away) we had a good league 2 keeper, good pair of centre halves (Diamond and Collins, then Cresswell), and a competent left back.

The failings of Alfei and Tozer at right back were usually compensated by the organisation of the rest of the unit...

However they've cost us points all season, Alfei at York not clearing the corner, Tozer v Shrewsbury off the top of my head.

The issues have multiplied since Duke's injury which de-stabilised the unit, and been further exacerbated by Collins and Diamond getting injuries.

Lastly the chopping of the defensive midfield and wingers ahead of the back four have given rise to issues.

To fix it I think we need a new right back, Duke to be returned to the team, and some consistency of selection ahead of the back 4.

I keep wondering what Wilder saw in Alfei to make him opt against offering any sort of contract to McSweeney?

Can't have been down to £££ since he's ended up at Nuneaton.

Wasn't a world beater but the most convincing right back we've had for a couple of years surely?

according to Mainwaring Langmead is a million miles away.

**** me Eric Turner looks like the love child of John Joe O'Toole and Danny Alfei.

The issues seem to have stemmed from Duke and Diamond getting injuries plus Cresswell arriving.
Agree with this, serious concerns defensivley about Cresswell. We actually paid a fee for him.

Why does Archer jump in the air and push the ball away even when the shot is straight at him?

Seriously though we need Duke back and a new right back. A bit of competition between Collins Cresswell and Diamond for centre back won't hurt either

First and Third goal would not have been conceded by Duke....

Last night..? Explain please, that baffles me.
Replace Archer with Cresswell and I think your argument may stand up.

I was worried by Cresswell in his first few games but I actually think he has improved since then. I think our biggest miss is Diamond, he is in my opinion the best defender we have had in years and look at last season how our fortunes began to turn around when he came in. He is the one we need back more than anyone else.

We could have the worlds best centre half, but if he was playing alongside the rest of our back 4 he'd look fairly mixed.

This.

I think Cresswell is very similar to Langmead - he's a solid, physically dominant centre back but lacks the organisational and leadership skills of someone like Carlisle, Diamond or Collins. He'll look a lot better when he's playing with people who actually know what they're doing.

Wilder's fatal error in recent weeks has been to tinker unnecessarily with the midfield whilst leaving our leaky defence in tact. We now have one of the division's worst records for goals conceded, whilst we're continuing to score at least a goal every game.

If he doesn't drop Alfei for the next game then serious questions need to be asked about the reasons behind his selection. It would be nice if the local media weren't so weak and actually had the guts to ask Wilder why he's continued to select a player who has been responsible for so many mistakes when he has perfectly adequate alternatives on the bench.
