I didn't realise it was Motty who read out the Cobblers team until I read about it later but I certainly noticed the difference as I could actually hear the names. Let's hope he passed on some tips to the regular announcer.

Motty went to a top Public School so that might have helped.

I don't know whether anyone else remembers but Motson got the job when Match of The Day ran a viewers competition to find a new commentator. If you applied they sent out tape for you to record your commentary, then they had a final for the best chosen where you had to memorise team sheets and then commentate on a game incorporating nay stats you may have to hand. That was Motson's wining hand. Considering he proved to be such a long term success I'm surprised they never did it again.

I take your point he may have been well educated but since when has holding a microphone correctly been on a school caricullum?

What has that got to do with anything?!

They introduced it just after spelling.

Don't tell me you missed both classes!

Microphone holding was on our options but I ended up taking a course in spelling with the benefit of predictive text instead. My school was very well advanced at the time.

Many of us don't speak clearly enough. This isn't necessarily confined to where you were educated or even class. In fact plenty of lower class people speak excellent English ; at the recent January trust meeting last January some of the speakers were clear some were not. If you start to speak to quickly and drop every "h" possible some might find it difficult to follow you. Funnily enough at a local school(Thomas Becket) the girls singing in a choir were  instructed how to use the mike correctly. Perhaps it is elementary/intuitive to use a mike.

The competition was actually won by Idwal Robling although a lot of people assumed Motson was the winner as he joined the BBC shortly afterwards. Ian St John was joint first but Alf Ramsey used his casting vote to award it to Robling.

If we're talking education, shouldn't that have been TOO quickly?

I actually think no wall might have helped. Bit difficult to beat a goalkeeper from 30 yards if he can see the ball from the get go.

...........is this football slang OR is it an Marvoism? Thanks

get–go noun \ˈgit-ˌgō, ˈget-\

Looks like your grammatical presentation of "get go" is not up to your usual fastidious standard!

I don't have any standards, you can't when you use an iphone (big fingers). I do though admire the way you can never let anything go, reminds me of myself in a previous incarnation. Feel free to have the last word, you always do.

You would have not come to that conclusion at Wycombe - but the midfield today was mediocre at best apart from Ravenhill doing some kamikaze tackles etc. Tozer and Nichols were on todays showing lightweight which is why Langmead went up front!

I was at Wycombe
