A full back's primary role is to defend well, and Alfie is a much use in that role as a chocolate tea pot, if Wilder is unable to see that then I give up! Send him back, let the midfield and front men take care of scoring goals. Get defenders in who can DEFEND, it's a bloody joke!

Tozer looks less comfortable than Alfei going forward, but I still think Tozer and Hackett is the better FB/winger combination going forward - seem to be more on each other's wavelength than Alfei and Hackett. Still prepared to bet a sizeable sum that Alfei will never play a game higher than L2, if he has any kind of pro career at all. He's a 'defender' who can't defend - it's not rocket science!

So not one person yet who would play him in a 4-4-2 ahead of Tozer... Who we all know is limited in that position. I didn't think there would be.
So why is Wilder selecting him? Wilder must know that he is useless defending, and must look at the stats and realise that when Alfei is on the field we usually concede far more goals. I mean...our defence was doing ok recently - Wycombe, Pompey, morecambe (2 goals conceded in those 3) and then just the one at home to Burton in a hour. Then Afeli enters the fray....4 goals leaked in 2 hours. And seemingly back to square 1
Of course just prior to that run we let 5 in at home...again Alfei was involved.
I'm not just blaming him BUT it's clear as day that teams target him as our weakness. They know what we all know.
Please Mr Wilder..do the right thing. And get shot!

So why is Wilder selecting him?
I suspect, as others have said, that there might be an expectation from Swansea -either implicit or explicit - that he should play a certain proportion of our games. If that's true, then Wilder should have the guts to go against it and if necessary send him back. He's shown that he has the balls to drop big egos like O'Toole, so why is he persisting with arguably the worst performer we've had since he's taken charge? The only other possible answer is that he offers more going forward than Tozer, but even that is debatable if you look at the stats on assists and consider the effect of the 'Tozer bomb' - which was responsible for the 3 points against Exeter to name just one instance.

.....can't disagree with anything thus said - my only though I'm not even convinced he is better moving forward - if I factor in the long throw I'd definitely put Ben ahead - the whole thing actually a somewhat sad state of affairs because most would say central rather than full back is his best position.
Re him playing - there is almost certainly an if fit play clause - why would you put a player out on loan down 3 divisions without insisting as part of the deal he gets match fitness - well I'm afraid that particular arrangement has significantly contributed to 8 points lost.
Modified addition - sorry Bungle, just repeated what in part you have said - missed it for some reason!

Don't send him back. He could be useful at collecting the ball out of the east stand at our home games.

Git rid. Forget the assists / crosses / overlaps he MIGHT offer, the primary role of the right back is to defend the goal and he has consistently shown he is not adept at this. I'm a firm believer that defenders have to be judged solely on their ability to defend and anything they offer going forward should only be seen as an added bonus. Tozer has already shown in the games he has played this season that he is far superior to Alfei as a defender and, assuming he is fit, should be picked ahead of Alfei every time, regardless of opposition or formation.

Also, I can easily imagine Tozer getting one of his size thirteen's to at least one of the crosses that led to their goals. Bring him back.

Even if I take Tozer's long throw out of the equation, I still can't agree Alfei is better going forward.
He offers little/no threat from set pieces. More to the point, he looks great bombing down the wing with Hackett, but then I get so frustrated when 90% of the time he passes the ball straight to either the opposition left back, or the left centre-back. His 10-yard passing ability under pressure is shocking for a pro. Ben's vision to pick out a pass is limited, but at least he can connect a short pass more often not. I'm far from convinced Alfei's his crossing ability too.
The one plus point he has is a bit of pace, but he also got destroyed against quick wingers (e.g. Wolves) and Ben has even shown himself to handle that particular threat better anyway.
I'm fairly sure there is potential in there, but right now he should not be in our starting 11 in my opinion.
