This guys name has come up in the news and reminded me of a song that was sung on the Hotel End (and just about every other ground in the country at the time). I wont say what it was as times have changed and undoubtedly it would now be regarded as offensive and totally inappropriate but I just wondered if anybody else remembered it?

As soon as i heard the news this morning about Roberts release my mind immediately  reverted back to those distant days of the Hotel End and as marvo say's most other grounds singing that song.If such an incident happened tomorrow I could not imagine that this would happen again at grounds..For once I think times have changed for the  better.A disgrace that he is being allowed out.

Why? Are you the same person you were 48 years ago? Look at the lame sentences handed out to kiddie fiddlers and murderers these days. Not saying he didn't deserve a long stretch, but it's hardly likely he's considered a risk to society. and that is what they would of looked at.

If he'd've killed 2 civilians, I doubt he'd've got half the sentence. Anyway, said song was still doing the rounds about 5 years ago on England away trips.
And there were rehashings of it in Norwich when that bloke killed a burglar.

I remember singing it 45 years ago on the hotel end when I was 15 to be honest I didn't read the papers then and had no idea who he was, as I remember it was sung to the tune of London Bridge is falling down Harry Roberts is our friend he (does what he did) sort of style. Totally wrong sentiment then and I apologise for singing it, just as I do for comparing people from an Asian republic with the Welsh or bringing into question the parentage of Noel Cantwell.

He committed  2 of the murders, not all 3. And having thought about it, there was a tv docu drama on the subject, that may have led to the rebirth of the chant.

He killed two not three. But I'm interested in your statement. Should he have been hung because he killed policemen as opposed to...?

Whatever 2 or 3 who cares. I believe if you kill someone in cold blood you get the rope or chair, an eye for an eye. It doesn't make a difference if they're police or not. The people he killed were someone's son/brother father etc.

Fair enough. It was the policemen bit I was inquiring about. You'd be amazed how many people think that killing someone in uniform should somehow carry a stiffer sentence. A crime's a crime. A murder's a murder. Always someones mother/father/brother/sister. Death sentence or not; a uniform shouldn't affect parity.

Exactly, the confusion led to a policeman being shot dead and an 'innocent' person being hung...
