Hello everyone Two wins in a week, that London bus feeling is upon us. Anyway, this week our attention turns to the FA Cup, one of my favourite days of the season, and I am looking for your stories, comments, pictures etc relating to the world's most famous competition. I have nostalgic memories of first round day watching Saint & Greavsie build up the tie of the round which normally involved a whole village shutting down as they all went to the game. It was the non-league big day out and managers nervously worried about facing the boot on Monday morning. Of course, we fell foul to the upset on more than one occasion. Drop me a line with you FA Cup memories or anything else Cobblers to hotelenders@yahoo.co.uk. Mark

just quick thoughts, and not just first round
Basingstoke Away -coldest i have ever been at a football match...would never have been on, if it was not for sky covering it
Coventry home - Steve Berry - Wonderful - Rochdale next round - not so good!!
Rotherham Replay - What a night...and we should have won the 1st tie!!
I love the FA Cup (just hope i still do on saturday!!)

Enjoyed going to Littlehampton many a moon ago, good day out on the coast can't be beaten. Crawley was obviously not as enjoyable, terrible day out! One of the worst Cobblers displays I can ever remember.
Swansea in 1988 was a memorable day out for the wrong reasons but one I can look back on now and laugh about. I went with my mate in his Mini Metro car and as we got into Swansea the clutch went and it was stuck in 4th gear. We drove around looking for a garage but everywhere was shut so went to the match and decided to deal with it later. We were getting hammered 3-0 and decided to leave with a few minutes to go (only time I have ever done this) as we knew the car would need a push start. As we came down the stairs we scored, so we even missed the one goal we did get. Got the car going and somehow got all the way back to MK in 4th gear and he only stalled it once (at Finmere). Nightmare day at the time but funny now.
Rochdale away after we had beaten Coventry was also one of the most depressing days as a Cobbler, everyone seemed so sure we would win and be in the 5th round and to come away after a 3-0 drubbing was so depressing, terrible journey home.
The FA cup match that always sticks with me the most though is the Southend replay after we had drawn 4-4 at Roots Hall. The Hotel End was rammed and I remember the place going mental as we came back to win it. One of those evenings I will take to the grave with me (Alzheimers permitting!).

Villa at the County Ground in the 80s. Hotel end packed solid. They has been giving away tokens for tickets at the two previous home games so we'd had some big crowds for those as well. 17,000 there on the day. Hitting the woodwork three times and Saint and Greavsie reckoning Villa were the luckiest team to be in the next round.

Walters goal is also in 101 Great Goals video cassette I watched for many years as a youngster The season we almost lost league status we were drawn at home to Fulham who were riding high & we all expected a thumping but we beat them 3-1 with Steve Terry scoring a wonder goal from a free kick with Jim Stannard giving The Hotel End some language, for training The Cobblers had been ten pin bowling Losing to Bromsgrove Rovers & even being in the back of The Hotel End I got drenched, I think Tony Daley ex Aston Villa played for Bromsgrove that day

Do you know what "Nemesis" means?
A righteous infliction of retribution manifested by an appropriate agent personified in this case by a sex starved voyeur that is Tyro.

Rochdale away 1990 we lost 3-0, I wanted to leave early (along with many other Cobblers fans) when 'Dale scored their 3rd goal and ended up climbing over a wall. On the way home I ran out of petrol near Warrington on the M6 and had to get my mate to phone his Dad to use his credit card for £57 for a gallon of petrol and a 2 mile tow. On top of that it was snowing and the M6 was totally covered in snow.... Happy days (not)

Remember that day out well...not the game..sure it wasn't 3-1 (Darren Collins) although, we played at the Vetch twice in two weeks (in between a trip to Ninian Park)..went all of em! But, anyway, that cup day at Swansea had to be one of the best days out in respect of stopping off for towns and pubs. Five of us in a car..Neath first stop...Police escort with the buses out ...then Monmouth..Ross on Wye..and finally Worcester till around midnight..singing away to the Jam with some birds..it was Comic Relief! Thanks Glen..great chaufeur fella!

Ahh, Littlehampton. I loved that day out! How old were you fella?..Littlehampton..one of the dodgiest trips ever...arrived by train at 11am (early start from Leicester!!!)..into Dolphin pub..loads of their's gradually filling place up (Brighton lads I think)...ended up at some remote pub..right from station...after 150 said Brighton roaming round after..took a sharp left into housing estate..evasive action! Stayed overnite in Bognor..Golfy n Caddy had room booked..I didn't...they went to get food..I stayed put in dark room..Guesthouse owner comes in room..me lying on bed...goes out..then hear him say "how many went out, there's another on in there''...sneaked out at for s***e night in Bognor..then hared it out in the morning..bouncing down the street!

Not quite fella...14,529...I was one of em! Spion Kop moved under the weight of 4000 Villa..did the same under the weight of 2000 Swindon, three seasons later..hence, half the terrace being closed!

1972/3 Really big 2nd round fa cup tie V Bristol Rovers at the County ground, Rovers had just beaten Brian Clough's Brighton 2-7 and had a fearsome strike partnership of bannister and Worboys, 7000 fans watched the Cobblers dominate, have 3 goals disaloud, and lose 2-1, one lasting memory was a Cobblers "bootboy" running onto the pitch from the hotel end just as rovers were taking a freekick after a disaloud goal, and smashed the ball back into the Bristol goal, biggest cheer of the day.

Hitting the woodwork three times and Saint and Greavsie reckoning Villa were the luckiest team to be in the next round.
One of the woodwork 'shots' was a wild back pass from Villa that smacked the post. The crowd was so packed in the hotel the game had to be stopped at one point as people jumped onto the pitch to avoid being crushed.

FA cup memories....oh we had a few!!!
My first "official" away Cobblers match was the 1st Round Replay at VS Rugby back in 1984, got a lift with a mate and his Dad, stood out on that grass bank in the pouring rain, slid down the bank on my arse celebrating Wakeley Gages winner!! I was the first one onto the Hotel End when the gates opened for the Cup replay at home to Southend in '86....gates opened at 5.30pm for a 7.45 kickoff!!! (10603 in attendance!) Cold, cold Basingstoke....a match I stewarded! They "borrowed" a minibus load of stewards from NTFC for that game.....so I actually got paid for standing out in the sub-zero temperatures!!! And Rotherham away.....one of the best away nights out ever!!
