It must be one of the only businesses that can consistently fail and yet the man at the top is left relatively unscathed. A CEO at an under performing blue chip company would be long gone. "Well I paid my managers really well and gave them fantasic resources, it wasn't me."
It's a funny old game.
Just saying, I suppose, tone? You do see differences, obviously? For example, most 'top men' coming in get a 'golden hello'. A new man at NTFC would get a 'lead debt', although many people on here seem to think a great big golden egg is about to be laid. The only thing they're 'positive' about.

I actually see this as a positive step. I suspect that Wilder is alluding primarily to the activities of our physio team and sport scientist.
It needs to be acknowledged that despite our competitive budget other clubs at this level have a much better injury record than us and have fitter and more well-drilled players. Is the manager solely responsible responsible for this? I think not.
When you have a key player (Cresswell) being withdrawn an hour before kick off with no prior warning then questions have to be asked.

It just needs the right person in place at the top and I worry that Wilder isn't that type of manager. We are just heading back into firefighting territory again.
The problem is that relegation to the conference was a hell of a 'fire' to 'fight'. If we had appointed a 'visionary' candidate like O'Driscoll then I reckon we'd be playing nice football in sixth or seventh place in the conference right now. Ideally the time for a visionary manager to come in would be when we reach the dizzy heights of League One again.

Just saying. There are clearly differences as plenty of players would get the bullet too! Dave obviously thought a great big golden egg was about to be laid. He should have given the poor goose some Senokot before now. I hope he stands beside CW, continues to fully back him and works with him on the areas that he identifies. That would take a lot more courage than getting his old man to sack him.

We will never know though will we because we keep repeating the same cycle with little or no long term plan. Like I said before. The law of averages suggest we will eventually find someone that has enough about them to get us promoted but unless it's achieved on solid foundations then we will just be having the same conversation when we eventually end up back where we normally reside. We will fire fight our way through trying to get promoted then fire fight our way through trying to stay up. Sometimes you have to take brave and radical decisions to break a cycle. What kind of strategy would it be to just say let's get promoted then we can come up with a long term plan. We should have done it in the summer but why not do it now. And by the way it's not just about appointing someone that will get us "playing nice football" it's about instilling professionalism, adopting modern coaching methods and tactics. Having fixed targets of what you see the makeup of the first team being and how you are going to achieve that over time. Younger players having a structure that is familiar throughout the club right up to the first team. Valuing your playing assets correctly to gain the maximum benefit on the playing side versus eventual sale value. The worry for me is a lot of what Wilder says and does comes across as relatively old school. I could be completely wrong but I just don't like the way he seems to blame more modern methods of training or fitness work for being a big part of the problem. I also don't like the way he seeks to publicly address a lot of these issues rather than professionally dealing with them behind the scenes. I know some, including the Chron reporter see it as a good thing that he's so open and honest but it feels to me more like someone getting excuses in.

Will the equation change if they lose a Carlisle?

Which one, Clarke? I think we should stick with Wilder unless we hit rock bottom. Dave likes flashing his cheque book to preserve our league status. It makes for a more exciting end to the season too. You shouldn't really give someone a 3 year deal if you intend to sack them as soon as you have a rocky patch within 12 months. To be fair, the way he stuck with Boothy I think he'll hold his nerve.

Is the manager solely responsible for this ? - no, but he is solely accountable which is why he carries the name manager & in my experience it is only poor managers who openly blame their staff.

At some point it's going to dawn on people that we aren't likely to form a league one side from league one and two cast offs.
