You haven't got a clue. Harris has played many reserve games and hasn't been considered good enough to play as a striker or defender in our first team. The fact that he is hardly setting the world alight at Stafford Rangers should tell you all you need to know.

Holt doesn't just lack a yard of pace, he lacks two. In a league with any number of quick wingers i.e. Marshall at Barnet he would be left for dead at left back.

Your team including Harris up front and Holt left back would see us in the Blue Square premier

I don't think anyone can judge Harris form as a striker at Stafford as he's played centre half during his time there. Although, as I said on another thread, he has been blamed for a number of their goals in his six games (defeats) at the club, including an OG on his debut. I think his career as a defender is sadly over!

I don't think he's a sh*t left back, I just think he's being played out of position. You may be right that he started out at left back but he's obviously struggling. I'd like to see him back on the left wing as he's finally been able to string together a run in the team without niggling injuries disrupting his form.

But do you not remember the season we got relegated. Davis just wasn't up to it and injuries had nothing to do with it. He gets hit early on and go's missing every time. I think he could be brilliant but teams know how to keep him quiet. I wish i was wrong but I've seen virtually every game he's played for the Cobblers and he has to go down as one of the most frustrating players of all time. Yet, up until Barnet he has had his best period for the club by a long, long way...at left-back.

I don't know what the answer is...nothing would give me greater pleasure than seeing Davis succeed as a winger but like most of our squad there just isn't any consistency. drives me insane  Grin

I've spent the last 18 months trying to forget. Cheers Auntie. Gotta start all over again now!  Grin

From what I remember (may be wrong) Davis is only under contract until the end of the season so maybe we are all looking at the situation from the wrong angle....

His value in the summer if he runs down his contract is £0

His potential value in January as a hit and miss left midfielder is £0 - he lacks the consistency and know how to be anything better than hit and miss. No side would pay cash for him in this position.

His potential value in January as an eye catching left back is more than £0 - he is eye catching as he looks brilliant when he picks the ball up and runs 60 yards with it, the thing undermining the situation is his defensive fraility.

Selling Davis for £50k in January knowing Hall is a ready made (superior) replacement may be why we persist with the experiment, especially if it allows us to address other areas of weakness in the squad? The problem is our season may be over by then if we don't stop leaking goals.

PS - I'd personally play real fullbacks (Hall) everyday of the week but know there is more to the football business than football  !

I would have agreed with you a few weeks ago, but I don't think anyone would pay money for him as a left back after the pens at Barnet and Sheff Weds.

Complete agree with you banana man hence my comment about his defensive fraility

I just think there is validity in the idea that sometimes it is off-field considerations that impact on-field selections and tactics.

Of course the point you are all missing is that our manager's learning difficulties extend to the formation we are playing. Surely 5-3-2 suits this squad of players better? two players especially - namely Rodgers and Davis are far in away better wing backs than straight full backs. Johnson is better suited to RCB Tozer and Beckwith alongside him, with Hall/Holt also able to fill in there. Having three centre backs would take the pressure off makeshift players like those two. 5-3-2 would also enable us to play Wedderburn and Osman with Thornton in front of them. Or even Jacobs or if we need a battler Gilligan. And you could still play two up front. This formation is so much more flexible than 4-4-2 it can be defensive away from home, but also with full backs pushed on, very attacking.

I reckon Sammo is more worried about avoiding relegation than trying to get £50k for Davies in January.
The problem he, and all other managers without a budget at this level, has is that you either get defenders that are fast and unreliable like Rodgers and Davies, or reliable but slow. If they were both reliable and fast they would join Jason Crowe and co. higher up the leagues.

Agree with your Jason Crowe analysis.

I think £50k for Davis becomes attractive for Sammo if the Chairman has said "you can spend £x in the transfer window + anything you raise from the current squad + anything you get from Bradley's sale"

The only saleable assets we have from the current squad are Davis (potentially as an attacking fullback) or Jacobs. Jacobs will still command a transfer fee in June becuase he is so young. Selling Davis for cash could be the difference between paying for a striker or not.

There's one reason that shows Sammo isn't learning and it's bigger than all the others put together: namely his ongoing love affair with Ryan Gilligan.
