I like the formation and players posted earlier, although I like Holt (if only every players player with his commitment) and I also like Billy up front, ok he has not scored that many goals, however, his hold up play for such a small young player is excellent, hopefully we can keep hold of him for next year. But yes, for a home game against a team likely to be playing for a draw I would go with
GK Dunn LB Hall RB Johnson CB Tozer CB Beckwith LM Davis RM Jacobs CM Wedderburn/Gilligan CM Osman AM Thornton CF McKenzie
We then have a solid back four who's first job is to defend, we have two holding midfielders who can then cover for the flair and attacking threat of Jacobs, Thornton and Davis. Sometimes you need to do what the opposition least wants you to do, and if I was coming to Sixfields to play for a point, I would much rather face the midfield of the past few weeks than face the attacking threat of Jacobs, Davis, Thornton and McKenzie. However, like I also said this is no reflection on Holt or McKay who could still come on and do an excellent job from the bench. The 4-5-1 formation that Sammo tried earlier in the season was excfellent to watch, and to be fair we were unlucky not to get more results. Maybe we need to play with more flair at home and more grit away, almost pick two different teams.

I think we shouldve taken Sammo/DC literally when they said they were looking at non-league players.
Dunn Rodgers Hinton Guinan Herbert King McKay Harris
Would all look perfectly at home in the conference or below.

The problem with Holt is that he's a jack of all trades and master of none. He's an excellent player to have in the squad, but let's face it Beckwith and Tozer are better than him at centre back, Hall is a better left back and Davis is a much better left winger.
Personally I think the most important thing at the moment is to stabilise our leaky defence. I'd play: Johnson Beckwith Tozer Hall on a consistent basis, and give them time to gel.
Sammo's continued decision to drop Hall is one of the mysteries of the season - almost up there with the signing of Slowe.

Hall has no pace so Sammo favours Davis. I'd rather see Davis' pace in attack tho

Dunn
Tozer Beckwith Hall
Johnson Wedderburn Osman Davies Thornton
McKenzie McKay
Thats the only system which will get the best out of Thornton.
I think this would be pure quality. I think you would get the best out of Davis and Thornton, plus you would see a few of those marauding runs from Johnson that he hasn’t seemed to have been able to reproduce this year. Only having holt as back up at centre half and no one quick enough to replace davis could be a real problem though

Hall has no pace so Sammo favours Davis. I think you're right there: Hall has been left out due to a perceived lack of pace. However, our successful run last year was based on a back four of Johnson, Hinton, Beckwith and Gilbert, none of whom were blessed with much pace. Feel free to disagree with me, but I'm not convinced that pace is that essential for a defender at league two level. It's far more important to be solid, have good positional sense and show an ability to read the game. I think Hall is head and shoulders above Davis in these departments, and adds a calm, experienced head to a youthful back line; that's why he should be starting at left-back.

The main issue seems to be Andy Holt - who is in for reasons stated here plus he's old head and captain in young team. Shame the C/B experiment failed, as that would accomodate him and allow the changes re MH, LD and poss more.
What other sides have a wide player like Holty? I can't think of any - but I can't see Sammo leaving him out yet.
I can't see Sammo not using 4-4-2 either. There we go......it will all change on Sat v Hatters, now I've said this!!
The winter rumours thread is duplicating much of this.

I totally agree. What's the point having two pacey full backs when they cannot defend and have no positional sense (I'm talking of Rodgers and Davis). I even mentioned putting Holt back at left back and Davis on left wing. I got dogs abuse for that as "Holt is too slow". Pace doesn't mean everything, a good football brain does!

But if Hall had Davis in front of him there would be some speedy cover. (But of course that then poses the question of what do you do with Holt? I don't think he can be left out at the moment).

Davis is one of our most creative players and one of our only players with pace. Absolute waste at left back.

I dream of Johnno and Davis as wide midfielders - as imo both gems going forward - but so restricted and too talented to be mere F/Bs. Could we risk Rodgers and Holt/Hall behind them? and so play more attacking formation?

Andy holt would be the perfect sub , passion , influence and can play any where. Lets be honest Holt on a stick should be plan 'B' , for tricky away games or desperate times. Not are primary attackin threat
