There have been a number of posts recently stating that we cannot attract decent players to the club whilst we're flirting with relegation. Steve MacLean joined Oxford during their abysmal run and they're just two points ahead of us. His goalscoring record in the lower divisions is excellent. Today, he made it clear that he is available in January and with his contract running out and the fact that he's out of favour at Plymouth (who are close to going bust) we could and should make a bid. Here's what he said "If I do well here, Oxford might want to sign me or there might be other teams interested." Come on Sammo, make a bid! http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/o/oxford_utd/9238528.stm

With the last of the leaves having fallen from the trees and the first of the winter's snow having turned our green and pleasant land into an arctic wilderness (and the emergency loan window has closed), it is time to bade farewell to the Autumn rumours thread and start a new one.
Got any new rumours for the January transfer window?

True, that was whilst he was playing in the Championship for a struggling side. He's also had a few injury problems and has been in and out of the team since he signed for them. He was on fire at Sheff Wed and I remember him taking the piss for Sc***horpe. Only 28 years old too. Worth a punt, that's all I'm saying!

That's true - just looked on soccerbase and his record for Sheff Wed and Sc***horpe is much better, fantastic in fact...but he's 5'9" and 12 stone, so not really the target man I thought we were looking for.

It's a proven goalscorer we need, and they are rare but not impossible to get if you are bold and pay a lot of money, it's the only way unless you can develop your own, which so far we haven't. Most but not all the Conference level ones have been snapped up, they are the ones most likely to want to prove themselves in League 2 by sticking it into the net. Don't know enough about MacLean to make any rreal comment, except that if it's true he got only 6 goals in 54 games then he simply cannot be the one we need! A striker scores goals, at least 1 every 2 games. Forwards are a different matter and should not be confused with strikers.

As I said Steve, he was playing in the championship for a struggling side and had a few niggling injuries. His record at League 1 and League 2 level is fantastic. It's like comparing Jermaine Beckfords form from his time at Leeds to his first season in the Premiership with Everton. It doesn't make him a bad player but some players cannot make the step up. For our level I think he'd score a hat full.

I guess Sammo et al are having the same problem we are....name a goal scoring target man who we could possibly have a chance of getting....

He's actually known to be pretty good in the air with a good proportion of his goals coming from headers. It's not all about height. Emile Heskey is 6 ft odd and useless in the air. Have you got anyone in mind yourself then?

As I said in a previous post. His record in recent years has been poor due to niggling injuries and playing in a struggling side. His record at this level is fantastic. Look at players like Gabbiadini (at Darlo) and Thorne (at Bradford). Both had poor goalscoring records in their latter years until they dropped down into the basement division where they scored for fun!
