That's a sensible observersation
You are right, it isn't. But he has brought in 2 lightweight youngsters with poor scoring records, to effectively replace him. If they were not brought in to replace him, then why did he bring them in? Defender made a good suggestion, play Diamond up top. I tell you what. I didn't even go today BUT if he had come on for Toney I would argue that against 10 men we could have won it. As soon as Gray came on I knew that it was game over...he's simply not up to it. The ball doesn't stick in the final third...which effects the whole team and nullifies the threat that the deeper forwards bring to the table.

Completely agree about Diamond - the one thing you need for the 4-2-3-1 to work is for the ball to stick on the front 1 so the other 3 can come into play...and the overlapping full backs have a target for their crosses. Gray can't do this, jury out on Geronimo...might not be pretty, but rough Diamond could do a job.

Could creswell do it better though? Stick diamond at the back?

The defensive 'template' is complete....add to the attack one. Simples really. Im a firm believer that everything is black and white, don't try and fix something that isn't broken..

I'd be up for shoving diamond up there, certainly would offer more in terms of hold up play and presence in the air, hold up is Shattuck does so well. Fundamentally tho this forward issue should have been addressed the min Rico was confirm out for 8 weeks!

Not replacing Rico sufficiently prior to Tranmere, has had a massive impact on us not being in a play off place of a point or 2 outside now in my opinion. I wouldn't mind betting someone comes in this week! It's this wilder lack of decision making and reacting after the horse has bolted that worries me for next year!
How on earth can you expect Wilder to find a adequate replacement for the top scoring League 2 striker at any time let alone the outside the transfer window? Give the guy a break.

To be fair he has had all season to bring somebody in as cover ..... and even challenge him.

Spot on Macc, its been obvious since last summer that neither Nicholls, Sinclair or Toney were going to be good enough to fill Rico's boots following his inevitable injury. Wilder chose to do nothing about it early enough and now we are reaping the benefits.

Maybe he thought they were good enough to be adequate cover. Sinclair and toney should both have been better than they were / are

Do you really think Wilder wouldn't have got another quality striker in given the adequate funds?

Exactly. He had every chance to do this before Xmas and didn't. I don't think for a minute Diamond or Cresswell will be played up there. If you want a tall guy who is troublesome in the air and not consistent on the ground but who shows flashes of talent Toney is your man.

Bungle made a good point about the downside of this 4-5-1 formation...in that it is very difficult for Wilder to bring in an 'A player' target man type (permanently) when we already have one (Richards). Neither he nor Richards would want to be sat on the bench for long spells...and when you've got arguably the biggest forward prospect in the division (Toney) already, then its a very tricky one to manage.
That needs to be given some thought. I would even revert back to the 4-4-2 now and see if this group and be formidable in that formation before the seasons out. If you need two strikers in the starting line up then the squad needs 4...3 'A's and a 'B' as a minimum. That would make his summer recruiting easier...

Not sure he didn't have adequate funds back then, he just chose to spend them elsewhere. Mostly on the gamble that didn't pay off ... JJ

Add to that the fact you know Rico is going to be out injured for at least a couple of lengthy spells over a season (you only have to look at history to know this) and the argument of not keeping both happy by benching one disappears. Wilder has had the budget there's no don't about that! Your right it's been obvious all year, as we have had little in terms of a plan b from the bench as a big target man would have offers. Wilder should have addressed sooner!
