Derrick Christie and Paul Stratford (mixed race) are the first two who spring to mind for me.

Yes, Christie was the one I was thinking of.

I went to watch the Cobblers at Springfield Park against Wigan in 1978 (lost 0-2). There was no home and away end there then and I doubt there were more than a dozen Cobblers fans there, there was no coach and I only met a couple of other fans on the train. Anyway Christie was playing and when he entered the pitch a local standing near me said to his mate, "Hey look, they've got a black bloke playing for them" (or words to that effect). He was genuinely surprised and I was amazed at that reaction. However when I looked around the ground I couldn't see a single black man anywhere, nor did I see one on my way back to the train station. When you think, less than forty years ago?

Got to be a song in this somewhere Wink

I remember seeing him in the sports shop on the top floor of the Grosvenor when I was about 12. He was looking at trainers and I recall thinking how massive he looked.

And wondering how he managed to get his black skin to look so white....

Frankie got no abuse, or not that I heard from the back of The Hotel End.

I got more - "get that ginger tw@t off" , or if someone missed the goal by 20 yards "you've been watching Aidy Mann"

Wakeley Gage black? what's Drilling drinking?
I don't know , but Wakeley Gage, or Weekly Wage as he somehow became known, used to be seen drinking in our village pub!

Wakely Gage, the famous black centre half used to play up front for Duston CA at Dallington park. I used to watch him regularly, must have been around 1980 and he scored a hatful. After his Cobblers days I had a couple of meetings with him as he ran a courier company and was pitching for work. I'm sure his wife passed away quite young too.
He was one of my favourites, along with with black midfield terrier Warren Donald.

Perhaps O'Toole is really a Rastafarian. I think we should be told.

Derrick Christie was the first black player I saw play for us when he made his debut in 1973. He was also the first player who was younger than me and it began to dawn that I may not play for the mighty Cobbs !

In terms of players from overseas - Arnold Woollard from Bermuda played for the Cobblers as a defender from 1949 to 1952. Again we made history because Woollard was Bermuda's first professional footballer (many years before the great Clyde Best player for West Ham). He was discovered by a Cobblers Director on holiday and was apparently "soon found himself on a boat headed for England"

It appears from the photos that Arnold was a white Bermudian however he is very significant in our history because of the distance he travelled to play for us. He would have appeared very exotic at the County Ground.

He may have played in the famous FA Cup game at Arsenal in January 1951. We lost 3-2 but a record 72,408 turned up to see the mighty Cobblers. Anyone know our team that day ? He came back to the Cobblers in 1962-63.

The earliest black player (apart from Tull) that I know of was John Parris, who joined the Cobblers from Luton in around 1937. He was also the first black player to represent Wales.
