You should include midfielders, especially the "defensive" ones in the top list, IMO.

Moloney    1.00    1980    22
Horwood     1.04   2070 24
Duke            1.18   2902 38
Cresswell    1.22     3088    42
Collins    1.30     3678    53

The above is interesting reading because that was our favoured unit...and the stats pretty much say that there wasn't a real issue with the defence when they were together.

Collins figure (and Dukes to a degree) will be affected by them playing alongside the likes of Alfei and Robertson early doors, and Tozer to a lesser degree plus all of the short term signings.

You then compare the figures to the other two keepers we had last season and it tells the story I've been banging on about for ages...improve the goalkeeper and we will be fine (defence). We really do not lead to look beyond that, with Archer or Jahal in goal everything that was hit at them went in, pretty much!

A Bunn or a Nicholls in goal would see our goals conceded to games ratio down to 1.0 or even less, enough to be very successful given our attacking players.

Makes for a good read.

Shows you the "Experts" on here do not always have a clue!

Shows the retained list to be pretty much spot on.

We wanted better than Duke but he wanted to be a number one so he has moved on.

Good reading for Maloney!

I agree.  I've updated the defensive table to include the central midfielders, Taylor, Byrom, Ravenhill and Carter.  I don't think anyone could consider O'Toole a defensive midfielder.

I'll give you Nicholls, but I always got the feeling that most people reluctantly accepted that Langmead's best days were well behind him when he left.

O'Toole = 1.25

For those who are interested, he played a normal central midfield role a number of times, didn't really shirk defending, so IMO warrants a score.
