Does any one here play bowls? I am toying with the idea of giving it a go but don't know how to start up. Do you have to join a club or just turn up and play? Does anyone have any fond memories of a bowls match and do you have a favourite player?

You be careful there. Statistically speaking, bowls is a very dangerous sport. More people die whilst playing bowls than do rock climbing. it up there with golf in terms of fatalities.

Surely this is because most of the participants are about 200 years old, rather than an issue with the game itself?

This is an idea I have tinkered with lately. My next door neighbour is a member of Roade bowls club, as is a guy I work with. They have open days and also welcome people who want to give it a try. Give them a shout..

I'm a bit young for all this playing bowls malarkey, but I do remember watching it on TV on a Sunday night every now and again. The only 2 players I can remember are Tony Alcock (used to win everything I think) and David Bryant (oldish fellow who used to smoke a pipe while playing). . . . . . . Sundays aren't like that any more!

What about Willie Wood ? You must remember him!
On this clip the lady on the left of the interviewee looks a bit like Brian Clough (around 30 seconds in).

I've played bowls for the last 5 years and it's probably the best game for socialising especially if your club has a bar with cheap drinks, plus social events. Although the large proportion of players are quite old, there are also plenty of younger players who take up the game. Beware though, once you start playing many hours will be taken up with the game. Annual subs are usually about £100 but there are some initial costs in buying clothes and the woods. I would suggest buying second hand at first until you know which woods (bowls) suit you best.

It's normally best to join a club, just to receive coaching and meet like minded people for games and competitions, but there are council greens in some parts.

Thank you to those that have offered advice. I have changed my mind and Bowls may be something I will look at in a year or two.For now and have decided to look in to playing croquet.

I play indoor bowls three times a week at Rushden Bowls Club and it's a great way to socialise. The indoor game is wildly different to playing outside although the greens are the same size and the rules are the same. Our subs are £65 per year and we pay £2.80 per game. We have 'roll-ups' several times a week i.e. you just 'roll up' and play, with who you play with and against down to what card you pull out. We start at 9.30 - 12.00 on Tues/Thur and 4.30-6.30 on Wednesday. The bonus on Wednesday is that the bar is open at 6.00 so we gather round a table and enjoy a pint (Doom Bar for me - none of this lager rubbish) and have a laugh. They do like you to have three training sessions first and then you can join. We have more indoor than outdoor members, you can play all year round and it's more skilful, and yes most of us are retired. You should give it a go.
