As I have now lived away from Northampton for a few years I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread about the pros and cons of Northampton's pubs. I often treat a home game similar to an away game when in town and try to get a decent pub lunch followed by a few "pre-match cocktails". Setting the bar high the Malt Shovel is a fantastic pub if you can see past It's generally Saints clientele ( landlord a Cobblers supporter I believe), amazing choice of ales and a good many craft beers too not to mention the Belgian and German offerings also a decent range of cider. On returning from Bristol Rovers away and stopping at my parents the other week I popped in the new brewery tap at PhippsNBC and loved it. Seemed a really good atmosphere great pint of Phipps IPA and a nice refurbishment, a unique asset to the town I think. Will be visiting here for a longer look before the Oxford game next month and certainly looking forward to that.

On the other hand the one time a week my journey takes me through Northampton TC I look at The Auctioneers and The Bear and think what a couple of dives. However there are still pros to these kind of establishments in that they keep the below working class scum off the streets, although in the summer months the punters seem to spill out in all directions anyway. A tidied up Auctioneers with a decent seating area out on the market square would actually be quite nice in the summer months.

Welli Road is where you'd normally find me on a Saturday, decent range of pubs if you ask me. Start in the crown and cushion... Work into town.
Malt Shovel is a personal favourite of mine. Being 25, I oftem feel a tad out of place though... So Princess Alexandra is my alternative for good beer.

House at Home, Mailcoach, Wig and Pen, Queen Adelaide and the Charles Bradlaugh are all ok in town, a little further afield there's the Brampton Halt, Cromwell Cottage, Artichoke, Telegraph and the White Melville. There are still lots of decent pubs in the outlying villages around the town too.

I was in the Brampton Halt recently, excellent service and atmosphere. Sitting outside in the sun completed an very good day.

My personal favourite is The Old House on Wellingborough Road. The Brampton Halt and The Whyte Melville are both very nice as is The Spencer Arms.
