The wife wants to get me a new phone for Christmas but doesn't know which one would be best and neither do I. I don't use it much for calls but would like to get access to the internet. I'd also rather pay as you go than have a contract. Any suggestions?

There are loads available Marvo, depends on how extravagant you want to be. If you literally just want it for basic calls and access to the internet on PAYG then you will easily pick up a cheap decent one.
You can get a Blackberry Curve for £139, i'm an advocate of Blackberrys, they are very good business phones, quick email/internet access. However they aren't your typical 'play' phone, no really good games or apps or anything like that.
Depends also if you want touch screen or keypad? That will take out half of the options straight away.

HTCs are the buisness, I've got the Desire HD and apart from ropey battery life its an awesome thing. Plus its a lot better than the iPhone. It just doesnt have the marketing campaign.

If you want internet then go for contract, MUCH cheaper. Virgin mobile do a 30p a day deal internet on PAYG though, but ive had no end of problems with them just lately so I don't recommend. Ive got the Samsung Wave on £20 a month, it's not bad for a mid-range phone, I get 1gb of internet, 3000 texts and 200 mins. It works with Iplayer etc and runs the BADA operating system. You can get contracts from about £10 upwards, but as I said depends on how much you will use it. I'd also go with Blackberry or HTCs. Sony Ericsson are also good, had mine for 2 years and it was the best phone I ever had! Can pick them up cheaply on PAYG too, they also do your normal candy bar rather than touch screen. A lot of phones are touch screen (mine is) and I never thought I could use one so you will get used to it if you opt for a touch screen. Have a look on here, they have loads of good deals. http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/

A standard sony ericsson is what I'm using now, but download 'opera mini' and you're well equipped. It's what I'm on now.

I have a HTC on O2, the best phone I've ever had and very rarely have problems picking up an O2 signal wherever I go.
I had the iPhone for a week, didn't like it and took it back.
Blackberry's are s***e and only worth considering for business users.

Depends on individual experiences i guess. I've never want an Iphone just because its so stereotypical and common. However i know people swear by them. Never had a problem with my Blackberry, fast internet and good for emailing and texting. However like you say, probably more geared towards sensible users as opposed to those who want their phone to be their partner. Interestingly i had a Samsung before my Blackberry and i always used to rate Samsung, however my last phone with them really put me off, always breaking down, slow internet connection, crashed lots, very frustrating.

Arrrggghhhhh!!! The company that I can't name! If you're looking for a slightly cheaper handset, John, may I recommend the LG Optimus. £100 and runs on Android. Very nice phone. I'm thinking of getting one to be my back up phone for my iPhone 4, which isnt as good as the Desire HD but is better than other HTC's in my opinion
