In 86/87 under Graham Carr, Cobblers had achieved 68pts off 27 games compared with the current season's 58. They had also scored 75 goals by this stage against the current 49 and conceded one fewer.

86/87   PL 27  W 21  D 5  L 1  F 75  A 30  Pts 68
15/16   PL 27  W 18  D 4  L 5  F 49  A 31  Pts 58

However the 28th game saw Carr's team lose 0-1 at home to Swansea and they were to lose another 6 games before the end of the season before achieving a final tally of 99pts.

Given the fact we have played Plymouth and Accrington twice and of the remaining fixtures Oxford (A), Portsmouth (A), Leyton (A), Carlisle (A) Wycombe (H) are the tricky ones with the other 14 decidedly winnable, what are the chances of this team overhauling the 86/87 points tally?

Also given the possibility of choosing an eleven from the following 2 teams, how many of the current side would be picked?

86/87   Gleasure; Reed McPherson Wilcox Chard; McGoldrick Hill Donald Gilbert; Benjamin Morley
15/16   Smith; Moloney Diamond McDonald Buchanan; Adams O'Toole Byrom Holmes; Collins Richards

For my part I would pick Smith, Moloney, O'Toole, Holmes and Richards ahead of Gleasure, Reed, Donald, Gilbert and Benjamin leaving the final team

Smith; Moloney McPherson Wilcox Chard; McGoldrick Hill O'Toole Holmes; Richards Morley

Impossible to compare sides from pre and post backpass rule. It's a totally different game nowadays.

Dave Gilbert was a brilliant player, walk into this team. Best left foot since Joe Kiernan.

The Carr team shades it for me at the moment. The amount of goals scored being the main difference for me.

I wasn't born for the 86/87 team, but when you look at the stats comparing them they have to be considered the better of the two. More wins, more goals, less defeats and less conceded.

Let's all just be glad though that we have a team who are giving them a run for their money - and that for supporters aged under 30 they can finally have a team to brag about! Smiley

+1

Also having been lucky enough to experience the 86/87 master class they tore most teams a new ar **hole by whacking teams by 3, 4, 5 or 6 goals. I love this current side and the footy we play is sublime. I'm sure Graham Carr would admit we played to our strenghts catching teams offside virtually on the halfway line!!

That crazy 3-6 away win at the Shay was mental.

IMO 86/87 was a ruthless animal, 15/16 is more cultured with a huge portion of class. This crop also refuse to be beat when it matters.

I think they are truly focused on promotion and have proven to themselves by beating Plymouth in their own back yard that they possess title winning credentials. Plot a path through Feb with say 12 pts from 6 matches (with a draw at Oxford) and that will have us on 70 pts.

March and April also are 6 matches per month. Similar form will see us rubbing Pompey's arrogant 'big club' noses in it on the final day  Grin

This will probably sound crazy but I always thought the 86/87 team probably underachieved, it was always too easy for them, a lot of time they always seemed to be in first or second gear. They took it easy at the end of the season or they could have put up some even more incredible numbers.

We're playing well and winning. Extremely happy with this.
The 86/87 team smashed teams. Only 21 players used all season with 4 of them only making 1 appearance inclusive of league and cup! Different beast altogether with limited subs as well and some filthy challenges par for the course.

Adam Smith is a hero...Peter Gleasure was shocking by any standards in the last 30 odd years! Goals coming from all over the place back in 87 though.

That's a good point actually. Losing at Hereford and Col U, only drawing on the Friday night at Tranmere...then throwing it away in the big one at Lincoln, which ironically made it better as the title was won under a packed County Ground lights against Crewe!

Where Trevor Morley blatantly dived to win a penalty.
If you'd have said that night one of these players will end up as a future captain of England how many would have named a Crewe player?

A quick question regards the Carr team.
That season how many different players scored a hat trick?
I'm sure hill must have.
Morley?
Benjamin?
I'm sure I remember Dave Gilbert hitting two penalties against Southend but not sure he got a hat trick.
Loan player Paul mcmenemy did against Rochdale I think.
I'd imagine it's probably three which is possibly a club record?

I reckon only two hat tricks that season Hill v Halfax and Crewe respectively.

David Platt?
Remember one of my first ever games watched was Crewe Alex at the County Ground in 79. Crewe had an astonishing keeper who kept Farrington et-al at bay until finally the Cobblers got one to win 1-0. Black curly haired moustached chap from Zimbabwe with a funny name. Went on to play for Liverpool and get involved in betting!  Grin

Very unfair to describe Carr's promotion team as kick and rush or even direct. Hill charging through the midfield to score at will...is that direct? Gilbert's left foot was a thing of beauty and given that McGoldrick balanced Gilbert's skill with raw pace and went on to play for Arsenal and in World Cup matches he has to feature. Both centre backs were mobile and rapid. Morley was our most complete forward since the sixties:

Smith
Chard Wilcox McPherson Buchanan
McGoldrick Hill O'Toole Gilbert
Morley Benjamin
12th man: Holmes

Yes, two different eras but Carr's team would win, even under today's rules...simply because Hill was unstoppable.

Don't you think the 86 team would have nowhere near the fitness levels that players today have? Totally different game today regards fitness
