Most of the 86/87 side went on to play at a higher level.
Only Gleasure (Hitchin Town), Reed (Aylesbury) and Donald (Colchester) failed to progress.
McGoldrick (Crystal Palace & Arsenal), Morley (Man City & West Ham) and Hill (Watford & Oxford) all played at the top level.
Wilcox (Hull City), McPherson (Reading), Chard (Wolves), Gilbert (Grimsby) and Benjamin (Southend) all eventually played at Championship level

Away from the comparisons and going back a season , was anyone on here at the Cambridge away game in 85/86? I think we won 5-2 and I remember thinking something might be happening here.

I was there that night. If I remember Trevor Morley curled a beauty into the top corner in front of that away terrace and we went wild. A few bovver boots flew before and after the game if I recall. Happy days  Grin

With respect I believe you're talking about the 86/87 season which is the subject of this thread, not the season before. We won 3-2. Mark Schiavi who we had signed from Cambridge shone that day I'm talking about. Anyway, whatever.

Phil Chard was asked recently what the score would be if the team of 87 played their 2016 counterparts.
1-0 to 87 boys he said with out hesitation.
Asked why he was so specific, he replied that most of them are well into their 50's now.

I heard the original interview, he was actually asked "Why only 1-0?"...

When was that interview? Chard was my favourite player of that era and grew in stature as captain fantastic under Theo Foley in my eyes.
Although Shrewsbury will be remembered for Pat Gavin's backside it was Chardy who scored the first comeback goal minutes after he (or John Barnwell) had out himself upfront. Real Roy of the Rovers stuff.

Yes. Had been a passenger in a car crash a few weeks before...hurt a fair bit (trying) to jump around five times! The Sat before, we'd beaten Halifax 4-0!
The 5-2 win at Cambridge started the long running feud with St Neots as the embryonic NAT stopped off there after, clashing with locals and Chelsea!

Whilst I still maintain the 1986/87 team was better than this, we have a great chance to elcipse the points tally achieved back then.
After 29 games in 1986/87 we had 69 points and went on to total 99. We now have 64 points so only 5 behind the best team I have ever seen. In the remaining 17 games in 86/87 our record was W9, D3, L5 securing 'just' 30 points. This season we need 36 points to achieve the magical 100 points. Just over 2 points per game required. We have averaged 2.2 points per game so far. So, 12 wins and 5 defeats? Will we really lose 5? 11 wins, 3 draws, 3 defeats will do it. We really do have a great chance of eclipsing the great Graham Carr side. Who'd have thought that in November when nobody was being paid?

86/87 had better individual players, Morley, Hill and McGoldrick BUT I am starting to believe we have a better team (and definately squad) this season.

Well done CW/AK.

Please don't put McGoldrick ahead of Gilbert...that's just sacrilege! (Regardless of their careers post-NTFC)

It's hard to compare to be honest, both teams attacked at speed and both could be generous at the back. I think the big difference between the 2 teams is smithy. While Peter Gleasure was a good keeper he did have his pit falls. Saying that though, if we're comparing the teams then we are in for a barnstorming season and after what the club has been through this year who'd have thought it. Cheesy

At this time in the 86-87 season Carr's team were actually going through a sticky patch, with Morley out injured. In fact I recall Rambo was up front with Sir Ian Benjamin for a few games.

We did tail off a bit after storming the first 2/3rds of the season.

This season the team has done the opposite, stumbled around a little for the first 3rd, then just gone ballistic (so far anyway) It reminds me of the Swindon side 85/86 (I think) sat around the lower half for the first ten games or so then bang, won the division at a canter. They bought a few to the CG remember the bastards celebrating.

If this form continues there's no reason why this team cant break the magical 100 points and set their own piece of history. Go on lads!

In 86/87 we we're often referred to in the press as runaway leaders, when do we start earning the same term?

Back then it was all about the team, now it is equally about the squad. We all know deep down that if Hill and Morley had stayed we would have gone up again. This time around we need to build on what we have, rather than sell it off.

Don't care personally whether we do or don't surpass 87's tally, but to add weight to your wishes, in 87 the Cobblers were leading from virtually the off, Tranmere in an early night game or even the first home game on the Sunday, beating Torquay? But, did start tailing off from March onwards. This season is quite the opposite, with a jugganaut of momentum...so maybe!
