Holmes as a footballer has made the simple biggest impact as a player since Martin Smith - because of this would be very difficult to replace.
This is why IMHO he would be a far greater loss than say Adam Smith for example, as I think you would quite easily pick up a league 1 standard keeper (Bunn may even now fancy a return for example if Di Matteo dosen't fancy him)
But time goes by and people move on - The replacements for the people who do leave will be the biggest challenege and one RP will have to get right

As regards Adam Smith, if he does leave I think we already have a number 1 goalkeeper already at the club - name Ryan Clarke.

If we sold Smith, I'd be disappointed if we didn't invest on a better keeper than Ryan Clarke.

So could you point out WHY we need a better keeper than Ryan Clarke, what has he done wrong in the few games he's played for us? Good experienced goalkeeper imo that was only being kept out of the team because of the form of Adam Smith.

I think we've established that we would all miss Holmes + a few others if they left... However, it make b*gger all difference. All we can do is sit out the next couple of months and hope for the best. Personally I'm not prone to worrying about things out of my control. I'd rather wish them all the best and get on doing what I have done 45 ish years, namely support the basket case that is NTFC. I made the best of every minute last season. Stopped in plenty of lovely hotels in some great places, lapping up every minute of it. Because I had a sneaky feeling it might just not last But who knows.... The day Wilder left I become a fan of his replacement, same will apply if Holmes goes... And you think the players are fickle

Because he's a vastly inferior goal keeper to Adam.

And the evidence for this conclusion is?

you could probably look at almost all the teamsheets from last season and have a check on who played in goal

I'm not saying that am I. Dan suggested we need to sign a top quality goalkeeper IF Adam Smith leaves. I am saying we don't need to because Ryan Clarke is good enough with maybe a younger keeper as backup. I also asked for some evidence as to why he thinks Ryan Clarke is not good enough for our 1st team. When Adam Smith & Ryan Clarke signed last summer most people thought Clarke would be number 1, then it was only the outstanding form shown by Smith in training & pre-season that got him ahead of Clarke. Following that also his form throughout the season with the odd blip thrown in, never allowed Clarke a sniff at getting in bar the occasional cup game earlier in the season when I seem to remember him not letting anybody down. He suggested Clarke is a 'vastly inferior goalkeeper to Adam'. Not as good maybe, but vastly inferior - I don't think so.

I saw Ryan Clarke a couple of times last season and wouldn't have a problem with him as first choice...

Clarke is a great keeper, just didn't have much chance with form Smith was in.
I'd rather the money was spent elsewhere in the squad if Smith does end up being sold.
But I'd much rather he stayed.

I would be happy to see Ryan Clarke given a chance.I am sure Mr Page will know more about him than any one here on this forum. If Smith did go, as long it was for the right price i would not be to concerned.Great shot stopper and one on one's but not commanding enough in 6 yard box at present but still young enough to improve this part of his game.

If someone offers anywhere between £500k and £1m for Smith we should bite their hand off. Clarke would be a more than adequate replacement.
If Smith stays then fantastic, he'll only improve and we'll have a keeper who is still above the level we play at. If he doesn't, Clarke seems like a perfectly reasonable L1 replacement and I'm sure that wedge could be well spent elsewhere.
Holmes case is slightly different as I doubt given age and circumstance he'd command much of a fee, so you could argue, assuming he retains a similar level of form and impact, he'd be a bigger loss.

so let me get this right, smith is now not that good either doesn't command his box very well. Must be a mistake that he made football league team of the year across all 3 divisions then. If they go we will have got rid of 8 quality first team players and replaced them with.....a back up full back.

Selling Smith for less than £1m in the current market would be very poor business in my opinion, even with his contract expiring at the end of the forthcoming season.

We either need to cash in on Smith now, or tie him up to a new contract, otherwise we'll lose him for nothing next year (or a pittance if he still qualifies for compo). I'd like to think we wouldnt sell for less than £1m too, but anywhere between £500k-£1.5m is realistic. It depends on who bids, how many bid and when the bids come in (i.e. I imagine we got more for Mark Bunn that we would have normally as it was a deadline day signing to a prem club and I think a couple of clubs were chasing him). If we do sell, we need to ensure we get some good add on clauses in there too (not that they normally do us any good) then replace him with a proven keeper at this level, or another young star - I think Clarke is decent but I wouldnt be happy with him and an understudy in L1.

Yep, a pretty good assessment imo.

I decided when it looked like we were going to fold that I would pull out all the stops to get to as many away games as time and money would allow for as long as we had a club. That quickly changed, once we were saved, to not wanting to miss a moment of the season, even Plymouth on a Tuesday night in January. I still missed some epic games (Luton away, Northwich at home because of work, Carlisle and Orient away , finances designated to other games) We may well struggle next season, it's a given that we will, sooner or later, but the memories of last season will keep me going for years.
