I saw 999 at the County Rock back in about 78. They were pretty good.
I loved County Rock in the early eighties. It was either full of hippies in their afghan coats, dirty stinking grebos, or spiky haired b@stards, in black biker jackets and tartan trousers.
Also, the beer festival that everybody used to turn up for.

It was a great gig venue with a surprisingly good standard of band. I don't think I would have been there any later than 81, was probably going to gigs there from about 75/76 (I was 15/16) Virtually on my doorstep too. Happy days.

The bands were booked by "Big Bob" Knight who ran the Nags Head in Wollaston for years, the bands that were too big to get in at the Nag, he would put them on at the Cricket Club. My brother and myself used to work at both venues if any of the bands specified that they wanted an electrician in attendance. The night when Family played at the Cricket Club was interesting !

I didn't know that, Roger. I used to go out to the Nags with mates from Town. John Peel used to do sessions out there on Sunday nights. I was amongst a very small Sunday night crowd watching U2 on their first tour of the UK in 79, I personally preferred Killing Joke who were on a couple of weeks before/after them. Bob would have liked to have got Bono and the boys down the Cricket Club. They came back to Town in 81 but played the Nene College. The Paddocks at Harpole had some good bands on from the mid 70's onwards.

Didn't Peel also do a spot in Harpole? The mighty Fall definitely played there in 1980.
I also saw U2 two years later in October of 81 during my first month away at university in Liverpool and I remember the crowd being sparse for that one too. The one time I saw Killing Joke the gig was stopped when the drummer collapsed.
And I had tickets for the Sleafords Roundhouse gig last month!

Pretty sure that some on here will appreciate yr choice of music? Is there any chance of you "enhancing" your messages with a few words if only to clarify the point you are making?

Thanks

For you on Facebook look up a new group called Sweat On The Ceiling. About the local music scene in and around Northampton over the years. Memories, ticket stubs etc. Nothing to do with NTFC unless you count the Might Quo at Sixfields. R.i.p. Parfitt

No. It brings back a few memories though. Cheers for the facebook link Zen. I had some good nights at the Roadmender. Hothouse flowers would be at the top of the list.

My memory of the Roadmender goes back to it being a youth club early 70's and playing football on the roof. Loads of the lads went on to be Cobblers usual suspects up the Hotel End.

I once saw bob love and the rissoles in the roadmender way back when.
It was when they had the original lead singer Herbert Norman and the dearly missed roger Rodgers on the trumpet.
I beleive the later line up featuring Colin lyles and Dave bourbon played quite extensively in and around the county until they split up in the late 80's,reforming for a one off gig in 2000 at the Glasgow barrowlands.
I know Colin still tries to take in the odd game when he is over from America and has space in his calendar when he isn't touring but obviously this isn't easy.

Interestingly Rodgers two daughters Rosie and Ronny are on the cusp of making it big on the country scene in America and the Rodgers sisters first album reached #23 in the country charts,
When I spoke to Ronny earlier this year she told me they will be over this way in 2017 because they are playing a tour in Ireland and will try to take in a cobblers match if they can.
Maybe they can do the half time draw?
